Component digital reording is now playing an inreasingly important role in editing, omplex piture manipulation and arhiving of film based programming the performane limitations of analog VTRs. byoveroming Sony has met the hallenge of developing the tehnologies that are neessary to provide users with even more advaned digital performane and now introdues its seond generation 0-1 VTRs -the OVR-2000 and Sonys advaned semi-ondutor tehnology in devies suh as VLSI and Gate Array Ciruits results in the ompat size and light weight of the OVR-2000, whih is of single rate onstrution. Furthermore the OVR-2000 adopts a new playbak system whih dramatially improves reliabili~ espeially in normal speed playbak. To integrate the VTR effetively into omponent digital systems, omponent digital 1/0 ports are fitted to the OVR-2000 as standard. To work in an analog environment, optional video and audio NO and O/A onverters are also available. The OVR-2000 aepts the three sizes of assettes (S, M and L), with a maximurry reording time of 6 minutes for S-size, 34 minutes for M-size and 94 minutes for L -size. To provide adjustment free operation, the OVR-2000 inorporates an automati ompensation systems for playbak equalization and traking, while the hannel ondition an be easily monitored on its ontrol panel. The Sonys progressive digital VTR tehnology is ondensed in various advantages of the OVR-2000 espeiallyas its ompat size, low power onsumption and reliable mehanism. 3 FEATURES I Highly Reliable Playbak System I The OVR-2000 adopts a new sanner ontaining eight playbak head tips, arranged in two groups of four. At normal playbak speed, eah program trak is traed twie by a pair of heads and eah output is individually proessed by the inner ode error orretion iruitry. Eah pair of orreted bloks, ontaining the same reorded information, are then seletively added in a memory to redue playbak dependent errors. As the result, playbak error rate is dramatially redued, ontributing to highly reliable playbak. With this unique playbak tehnique, even if one of two groups of playbak head tips are damaged, playbak is still possible in an emergeny. These funtions make the OVR-2000 highly reliable. I State of the Art Eletronis I Compat, Lightweight and with Low Power Consumption Taking full advantages of Sony's innovative semi-ondutor tehnology in VLSI, LSI and Gate Array iruits, the OVR-2000 is ompat in size and low in weight, just 8U high and weighing 65 kg (1431b 5 oz}. This advaned tehnology redues number of PCB (Printed Ciruit Boards} in the OVR-2000 to only ten without ompromising its funtions, ontributing to the low power onsumption of 400W. The ompat mehanial onstrution of the OVR-2000 results in it being a single unit VTR -two OVR-2000's an fit in the spae of one OVR-1 000/0VPC-1 000, the urrent Sony 0-1 VTR. Installing OVR-2000's will save spae and allow the spae onsious design of editing suits and OB (Outside Broadasting} units. However, when a OVR-2000 is required to work in an analog environment, the BKOV-4224AO/42240A 0-1 Signal Converters and the OAO-A2000 Audio Converter Unit are available as aessories for video and audio A0/OA onversion. I Adjustment-free Operation I Automati Playbak Equalization To improve its operational performane, the OVR-2000 uses an automati ompensation system for playbak equalization. This automatially detets and ompensates for playbak equalizing errors. RF gain and phase are automatially optimized in playbak so that the error rate is minimized. This feature gives reliable and stable playbak pitures without ontinuous manual optimization. Automati Equalization Blok Diagram Automati CTL The DVR-2000 has an automati CTL system, eliminating manual optimization of the traking ontrol in normal playbak. The automati CTL system operates by ontinuously monitoring the off-tape RF level from the Advane heads and feeding a signal bak to the apstan servo ontrol system. Along with the automati equalization feature ensures high quality piture playbak system, this at all times. Easy Channel Condition Monitoring * These speifiations indiate the ombined value of the DVPC-1000 proessor portion and the DVR-1000 VTR portion Component Digital Inputs and Outputs As a Standard Along with the growth in appliation for the 0-1 format, many peripherals equipped with omponent digital 1/0 interfae have appeared on the market. T o effetively integrate the OVR-2000 into omponent digital systems, it is equipped with digital input and output ports for both video and audio as a standard. For system interfaing, both parallel and serial digital 1/0 ports are provided for the OVR The Serial digital interfae, whih is based upon the SMPTE T , has the signifiant advantage of handling omponent digital video, four hannels of digital audio, digital VITC and video index information on a single, low ost oaxial able. Channel Condition Cheking and Logging The DVR-2000 has the ability to hek hannel ondition during normal playbak and onfidene playbak. Three olored LED's (green, yellow, red) are inorporated in the BKDV-2010 Control Panel to hek the hannel ondition of both video and audio. Eah LED indiates the error rate ondition, green showing a good hannel ondition while red indiates a poor hannel ondition. When the error rate exeeds a threshold level, its time ode data is stored. The result of this hannel ondition logging an be displayed on the Diagnostis menu. The hannel ondition logger system eliminates the need for ontinuous wathing piture monitors while reording or playing bak.

4 Channel Condition Monitoring Full details of eah hannel ondition are provided in the EL display of the ontrol panel, with bargraph indiation of hannel ondition. Channel ondition either before or after error orretion proess an be displayed. These hannel ondition monitoring and logging features are very effetive in evaluating reorded video/audio signals during a reording or on later playbak. The hannel ondition an also be aessed via the RS-232C port on the DVR-2OOO, and an be stored in external devies suh as miroomputers aording to the Sophistiated Control Panel Operation All the information required for operation of the DVR-2000 is provided on the large EL display (640 x 200 dots). Operation items are logially ategorized into eight main menus. These are easily aessed by using the eight menu keys, with the menu ontents displayed on the large EL panel. Set-up or seletions are easily made using the 12 funtion keys loated under the EL display. In the DVR-2000, the CTL reord/playbak and erasure.cassette size, running diretion, remaining tape time and head is positioned in the lower drum to allow preise seno playbak speed information is provided on the EL ontrol and aurate traking adjustments. This CTL R/P display. head position allows it to be extremely tolerant to tape speed errors, greatly ontributing to improved tape interhange. A separate stationary CTL head is provided for CTL signal onfidene, so that CTL signals an be heked on a waveform monitor during reording. Display Controls Edit/Cue Control Tape Transport Control

5 Easy Servie and Maintenane Internal Test Signal Generator The OVR-2000 has a built-in test signal generator providing five video test signals (Color Bar 100%, Color Bar 750;0, Blak, Multi-burst, Serial Oigitallnterfae (SOl) Chek Fields) and two audio test signals (1 khz, 10 khz), eah of whih an be seleted from a ontrol panel menu. These built-in video/audio test signals are useful for VTR maintenane, system onnetion examinations or adjustment of external NO and O/A onverters. Built-in Time Code Reader/Generator The OVR-2000 has built-in L TC, ASTC (Audio Setor Time Code) and VITC time ode generators and readers. ASTC is a digital time ode reorded in spare data bits in the digital audio setors of the helial traks. Both VITC (Vertial Interval Time Code) and ASTC an be read, even at slow speeds and still frame, and an also be used for reording/ playbak of time ode related to the soure signal, either video or audio. This apability to handle three time odes greatly inreases the editing effiieny of the OVR The DVR-2000 is of single unit onstrution, with all the PCB (Printed Ciruits Boards) of the DVR-2000 on plug-in boards for easy serviing with the supplied extension boards. The number of omponents used in the tape transport area has been drastially redued for the high reliability and servieability. The DVR-2000 employs a sophistiated self-diagnostis system to hek the ondition of the VTR during operation. All the diagnostis information to aid maintenane is provided on the ontrol panel's EL display. A BYPASS Test feature is also inorporated in the DVR-2000 to hek whether eah board is funtioning properly. The DVR-2000 also has built-in video/audio test signal generators whih are useful to hek boards where a malfuntion is suspeted. The ontrol panel attahed to the DVR-2000 an be positioned in ten steps and then loked at any of ten positions. Furthermore, the ontrol panel attahed to the front panel an be ompletely removed and onneted to the rear panel of the VTR for high serviing. I Three Cassette Sizes Aepted I The OVR-2000 is designed to handle all three sizes of assette -S, M, and L-size. Maximum reording and playbak times are 6 minutes for S-size assette, 34 minutes for M-size assette, and 94 minutes for L-size assette. This allows an appropriate assette size to be seleted for different appliations. The most ritial aspet of a smooth tape path is maintaining orret tape tension. In the DVR-2000, tension regulation arms are provided on both the supply and take-up sides. The additional take-up tension arm not only allows smooth and preise tape tension ontrol, but also greatly improves the response to the "Jog" dial operation. With the adoption of an improved larger diameter apstan, the DVR-2000 offers the wide range of pinh-on mode playbak and the response to the jog dial operation is also inreased. The loading mehanism is diretly related to the tape tension ontrol. By using an improved supply tension regulation arm, tape tension an be preisely ontrolled even while the tape is threading. This feature makes possible the short loading time of six seonds for L-size assette, five seonds for M and S-size assettes.

6 I Enhaned Appliations I Parallel Operation The use of a BKOV-4224AO and a BKOV-42240A 0-1 Signal Converter, in onjuntion with two OVR-2000's, an form a range of reording/playbak systems..4:2:2 piture plus key hannel prodution (4:2:2:4 mode).full band GBR plus key hannel prodution (4 x 4 mode).doubled horizontal resolution of 525/60 or 625/50 signals (8:4:4 H mode).progressive san 525/60 or 625/50 system (8:4:4 V mode) These appliations will beome more widely used in highend post prodution houses, where the reording/playbak of wide bandwidth key signals is a ritial aspet. The BKDV-4224AD/4224DA an also be used as normal ND and D/A units for the DVR Film to Tape Transfer This mode provides improved effiieny in the editing of film material transferred to a DVR-2000 in a 525/60 system. One the IN point and field number of the first edit are set, the DVR-2000 will automatially deide the OUT point and field numbers of the edits to follow so that eah edit mathes the 2-3 pull down sequene. The film to tape transfer of the 625/50 system is arried out in the graphi operation mode without any speial onversion requirement. Component Signals -From Aquisition to Editing With the use of Betaam SPTM Camorder, a BVW-075/075P Betaam SP VTR with 4:2:2 Serial Oigitallnterfae and a OVR-2000, a signal an be retained in its omponent form from aquisition to editing, with no external deoder and enoder units. Graphi Operation This mode simplifies the reording of graphis with a OVR After eah edit, its OUT point is automatially registered as the IN point of the next edit, allowing easy editing of images reated with graphi omputers or disk based reorders. Wider D-1 Appliations The realization of ompat and lightweight hardware will provide the OVR-2000 with the probability to be used in the OB (Outside Broadasting) Van system or the automati transmission system. This will extend the breadth of appliation of the 0-1 format VTR.

7 INTERFACE FACILITIES I Digital 1/0 I Parallel Digital Video Interfae One parallel digital video input port and one parallel digital video output port are provided for the DVR-2000 and these interfaes onform to the SMPTE 125M/EBU Teh 3246 formats. Both digital video and four hannels of audio signals an be output via this output port. Digital interfaing with other D-1 VTRs or equipment with a parallel interfae is possible via this port. By using an optional digital rate onverter (DFX-1200/ DFX-1200P/DFX-2100), the DVR-2000 an also be interfaed to D-2 VTRs, sut1 as Sony DVR-20/28/10/18 series, via this port. Serial Digital Interfae The DVR-2000 is equipped with one serial input and three serial output ports, eah of whih arries digital video and four hannels of digital audio on a single, low ost oaxial able. Digital interfaing with other Sony D-1 VTRs and the BVW-D75/D75P Sony Betaam SP VTR is possible via this serial port. This serial form of transmission greatly simplifies system onnetions, whih an now be over long distanes. One serial ative-through output port is also provided on the DVR-2000 and a signal fed to either serial or parallel input onnetor an be output via this port. AES/EBU Digital Audio Interfae Four serial digital audio 1/0 ports are provided on the DVR This interfae onforms to the AES/EBU format ( 48 khz sampling) and are synhronized with the video signals. Referene The DVR-2000 an aept both serial digital and analog blak and burst signals (or an analog omposite signal) as a referene signal. One serial digital (with ative loop-through port) and one analog blak and burst onnetor (with loopthrough port) are fitted to the DVR CF Pulse As omponent signals deoded from a omposite soure an be reorded by the DVR-2000, olor framing information is neessary for later re-enoding of the signal. Therefore, the DVR-2000 has CF (Color Frame) pulse 1/0 ports in order to math the enoding and deoding axis. The use of this port extends the use of the DVR-2000's to systems having both omponent and omposite equipment. Monitor The MONITOR port provides an output to monitor the RF envelope of digital video and audio signals, or the CTL signals on a waveform monitor. As the DVR-2000 has a CTL onfidene head, the CTL signal an be monitored even during reording. Trigger The TRIGGER port enables signals from the MONITOR port to be monitored without supplying an additional referene signal to the waveform monitor. Monitor Output The DVR-2000 has three serial and one parallel digital Monitor outputs. Digital video, four hannels of audio signals, time ode data and VTR status are available from eah of these ports. R5-422A (REMOTE 1, 2 and 3) The DVR-2000 is equipped with three RS-422A Sony 9-pin remote interfae ports for flexible system ontrol. RS-422A equipped Sony VTRs and BVE series editing ontrollers an be interfaed via these ports. R5-232C One RS-232C serial port is provided to interfae with external equipment, suh as modems and miroomputers for hannel ondition monitoring, et. Parallel The DVR-2000 is equipped with a 50-pin parallel interfae port. This parallel port enables the basi funtions of the VTR to be ontrolled from ustomized remote ontrol units.
