2 Avalon Middle Preliminary Activity Ongoing School Events The TOSS-UP Quiz show Tour visited Avalon MS on December 9 th. With this year s Celebrate Literacy Week civics-based them of Literacy Changes our World, 7 th and 8 th grade student participated in a fun and exciting quiz show contest testing their mastery of civics standards. *Play a variety of books on video for teachers and students to view in their classrooms *Teachers and staff pictures with their favorite book AND display these pictures throughout the school (maybe around the cafeteria?) *Door contest decorate classroom doors like a favorite book character OR a with something to promote reading that goes along with the theme of Literacy Changes Our World *Encourage teachers to read aloud and incorporate literacy activities in their curriculum during the week. *Book Giveaway have daily drawings on the morning show giving away books to students (we could use the books given to us by Just Read Florida). Monday *Morning ITV: Read a short bio of an author and display books by that author in the media center for students to read and check out *Million Minute Reading Marathon- Each class will read for at least 10 minutes during every class period throughout the day. This encourages teachers and students to spend time reading for pleasure. At the end of the day, minutes will be reported to Sue Morren who will submit the total to the district office. * Sock it To Reading today: Wear bright, colorful, and/or silly socks to school in support of literacy OR Hats off to Literacy wear funny hats in celebration of literacy. Tuesday *AMS will host or pre-record a video of a local personality highlighting how reading changes the world! * Be a Good sport and read today: Wear favorite team clothing to school in support of literacy Wednesday *Morning ITV: teacher discusses his or her favorite book from middle school (a couple of teachers could do this) * Hunt for a good Book today: Wear camouflage and hunt for interesting books from the classroom libraries that concentrate on the world Thursday *Morning ITV: Read a short bio of an author and display books by that author in the media center for students to read and check out * Newspaper Day. Wear black and white to symbolize newspapers. Keeping with the theme of Literacy changes our world, teachers share newspaper articles with students or have students bring newspaper articles to share with the class. Friday *Morning ITV: teacher discusses his or her favorite book from middle school (a couple of teachers could do this), and dress up like a character from the book * Book Character Day : dress up like a favorite book character

3 Bagdad Elementary January 25th January 27th Moonlight Madness: Students will wear pajamas and bring flashlights. Each classroom will spend some time doing independent reading with their flashlights. We re Over the Rainbow About Reading: Each grade level will dress in a different color for the day. Book activities will be offered that go along with Reading Rainbow Books. Moustache Day: Student will be able to wear moustaches to school. There will be several activities that will require students to use the phrase I Moustache you a question about a book. January Team Up with a Good Book: Students will sport their team 28 th colors that day. Players from the Blue Wahoos Baseball Team will act out Casey At the Bat for 3 rd through 5 th grade students. The Pensacola Ice Flyers and athletes from Milton High School will spend time reading different books in classrooms. Vocabulary Parade: The book Miss Alaineus, A Vocabulary Disaster (Debra Frasier) will be read to each classroom during the week. The culminating activity will be a Vocabulary Parade throughout the school. Each student will dress as a word of their choice for the day. All Week Each day on the morning show a Mystery Reader will read a portion of a book without being shown. The students will try to guess the Mystery Reader. Guest Readers will come to classes throughout the week. Interactive Read Aloud lesson plans will be provided for use in all grade levels. (Books were purchased by Bagdad Boosters)

World of Music Students will read about how literacy has influenced musicians. Students will read song lyrics. World of Imagination Primary students will read Harold and the Purple Crayon. Older students will read about Walt Disney. Students will write using their imagination to tell how literacy will change their world. World beyond our Own Students will read about astronauts. Including Neil Armstrong.

Teachers will provide plenty of opportunities for students to read independently and with others. Students will listen to classic texts provided by teachers, parents, and guest readers. Students will share personal literary works and develop artwork based on their favorite books. 9 Gulf Breeze Middle Monday Million Minute Read Each class period will read for 10 minutes. Each teacher and student will enjoy free reading to celebrate reading choice. Tuesday GBMS will host or pre-record a video of a local TV personality highlighting how reading changes the world! Hoping to get Sue Straughn from Channel 3 News! Wednesday Changing the world begins with SHARING with others. Today, GBMS will host a book swap. Each student in the school will be invited to the library to drop off and pick up a book. We will provide additional books for students who may not have a book to bring or give. Our goal is for every student at GBMS to leave with a book they will read. Thursday Story chain activity Teachers will take a suspenseful story and divide it into six sections. Each period, the teacher will read out their section. In sixth period, the big reveal will happen! Mystery solved! Friday Blue/Gold card giveaways GBMS has a reading incentive program utilizing the SSYRA books. As students read, they receive privileges and rewards at school. On this day, independent reading will be celebrated by our students and staff.

10 Hobbs Middle January 25th Million Minute Marathon: All students in all classes will read The Instructions and Chapters 1-5 from City of Ember (Jeanne DuPrau) during the first 10 minutes of each class. This novel is our One Book, One School (OBOS) selection for this year and will serve as the focus of all literacy week activities. Each chapter has a focus question to set the purpose for reading the chapter or section. This year s OBOS will highlight guest readers (former school administrators, teachers, and students) to provide audio chapters on our school website. Parents and community members can read along at home or work with Hobbs Middle. Each reader will have a link to his bio and specifically answer how literacy has impacted his life. January 29th Parents and students will be invited to walk through the novel from 4-6PM. Each chapter will be represented by a classroom s decorated door designed by Hobbs Art students. The book tour concludes in the library, where gently-used books are for sale to parents and students. These books have been donated by students, teachers, and community members with the hopes that the steeply discounted price will allow more people access to great books. Proceeds go towards funding other literacy-based initiatives. Our Civics Literacy Project documentation will be displayed, so all are aware of Hobbs Middle s efforts to change our world.

11 Holley Navarre Intermediate Million Minute Marathon Blue Wahoos Assembly to kick off 9:00 AM On ITV, selected students read their writing piece: "A book that changed my world." Students create a float to showcase a book that changed their world and participate in a parade. The rest of the school lines up in the hallways to view the floats as they pass by. 12 Holley Navarre Middle Students have been preparing t-shirts in celebration of literacy week. The final t-shirt designs are due in today for judging. 13 Holley Navarre Primary *Million Minute Marathon-Students will read for an additional 20 minutes during the day in celebration of literacy. Daily Theme- Pajama Day - Students cozy up with their favorite book. Daily Theme- International Tuesday -Students may dress up to represent a country as we read around the world. Daily Theme- Wacky Wednesday -Students dress wacky to remind them how fun reading can be. (wear shirt backwards, inside out, wacky color combo, different shoes, etc.) Guest Author-Tim Weeks Daily Theme- Daily Theme- Reading Builds Character -Students may dress up as favorite book character from their favorite book. Literacy Night- Candy Land Around the World Family Night, 5-7 PM Daily Theme- Fancy Friday -Students dress up as Reading Royals (kings and queens).

14 Jay Elementary Each grade level will "host" a cultural trunk from the Pensacola Museum of Art. The trunks contain pieces of art, music, literature, and other artifacts from a variety of countries. The trunks will be explored all week. Cultural trunks include: India, Africa, Greece, Latin America, Australia, China, Japan, and the Seven Wonders of the World. A mock "Battle of the Books" will take place to prepare students for the competition in the spring using the Sunshine State Young Reader Award books. Discovery of cultural trunks continues. 15 Jay High Classes will use an Achieve article to demonstrate how math can change the world. Assistant Principal will read aloud in classes. 16 King Middle Million Minute Read. Students will read in every class. Be A Good Citizen--Students will learn the responsibilities of being a good citizen. Students will be divided into groups of three to four to discuss the meanings of various citizenship quotes. Using the quotes the groups will develop a universal definition of citizenship. These definitions will scroll on ITV throughout the week. Be a Good Citizen-- Vote. Students will analyze political cartoon portraying apathy to examine the value of voting. Be a Good Citizen-- Vote. Students consider the barriers to voting and their causes and impacts. Be a Good Citizen--Vote. Students participate in a mock election.

17 Oriole Beach Elementary To begin celebrating literacy this week, students will be given a STAR BOOK BUCK that is worth five extra check outs! Students love checking out extra books and this week is a perfect time to have a BOOK BUCK BLASTOFF! Family Check Out is a weekly event at OBE. Students and their families check out books and students take AR quizzes. To Celebrate Literacy Week, the OBE PTO has planned to host READING UNDER THE STARS following Family Check Out! Families will have opportunities to look at the stars, read under the stars, and students will become STAR Author / Illustrator Lee Harper will visit OBE students. Mr. Harper plans to have 3 presentations: Pre-K / Kindergarten / 1st graders; 2nd and 3rd graders; 4th and 5th graders. After Mr. Harper describes his writing process, students will have an opportunity to ask him questions about writing. Then students will draw as Mr. Harper instructs and draws. JUST READ, OBE! Classes that participate in JUST READ, OBE will READ all day! This is an optional event due to class requirements, curriculum needs, and weekly tests. All 5th graders who have achieved their AR reading goals will celebrate with a Super Bowl party hosted by the library. Students in other grade levels celebrate reaching their AR reading goals with library parties:... 4th graders celebrate with a Mardi Gras party.... 3rd graders enjoy an Animal Adventure.... 2nd graders attend Camp Read-a-Lot.... 1st graders discover that Reading is OUT OF THIS WORLD!

19 Pea Ridge Elementary Community and Relationships: Literacy Changes Our World Each day represents a group of people who impact students. ITV Introduction to the week and activities. Teacher Read- Aloud in each classroom for 30 minutes. Pace High School students visit and read to each class. Buddy Up and Read: Intermediate classes will pair with primary classes and buddy read. "Reading Under the Stars": Evening family event with outside stations for telescope star gazing, snuggle reading, crafts, and snack. Character Dress Up Day: Students dress up as their favorite story character.

20 Santa Rosa Adult School Caught You Reading Campaign : Pictures of the teachers and staff members reading a favorite book will be posted as a flyer/bulletin board item around campus. A great opportunity for the kids to see us read because they probably have never caught an adult in their life reading anything other than a magazine or articles on the internet. Drop everything and read (begins on but will run throughout the week): At random intervals the office will push over the intercom to drop everything and read. Teachers and students will stop doing their lesson and read. The plan is to have this randomly occur at the beginning or end of a period for fifteen minutes. Faculty and Staff Picks: Each provides a book review for a book they like and would like to share with the students We're looking for an Amazon or Goodreads style review. School-wide Beatnik: A school wide poetry read including faculty and staff. Don t judge a book by the movie Book Club: Discuss where movies went wrong from their books Traditional book club meeting over a simpler book or traditional book club led by whole faculty to discuss a book of their choice
