1 Aloma Elementary Why is Reading important door decorating. Classes will receive sticky notes and each student will write why reading is important and display sticky notes on the outside of the classroom door. Reading is Fashionable! Wear a shirt with words on it (must follow OCPS dress code) Create Bookmarks! Students will create their own bookmark! We are hunting for a good book! Wear camouflage! Set a time in your classroom to DROP EVERYTHING AND READ (D.E.A.R.) for 15 minutes. Classes may buddy up with another class.

2 Andover Elementary School READING TIES US TOGETHER (Wear a tie.) Students read 20 minutes during the school day to participate in the Florida Million Minute Marathon. READING OPENS DOORS (Wear a shirt that you can read.) Andover is opening its doors to community readers. Approved OCPS volunteers are invited to read a story to Andover students. MY FUTURE IS BRIGHT (Wear a bright shirt.) Teachers share their favorite book with the class. SOCK IT TO READING (Wear crazy socks.) Two classrooms are paired up, and the older students read to the younger students. ANDOVER HAS STARS! (Dress up as your favorite book character.) Students write a poem in six words All writers will receive a Pride Paw and be entered to win prizes at the end of the week s drawing. 17 Dr. Phillips High School We will start off the week with a teachers' favorite book display to encourage students to check out new books. Daily literacy posts, like new books and literacy ideas, will be put on the media center's Twitter and Instagram. Students will be entered into drawings for candy if they complete a book recommendation for a book they recently read which will be displayed by the book. A literacy wall will be made on our glass doors for students to answer literacy questions using glass crayons. Throughout the week, students will be able to write the name of their favorite book, and explain why they like it, to be added to a chain hung in the media center for all students to see.

They will have literacy 'posters' for the unit, highlighting key words, reading a book and acting it out (sample books were Brown Bear and Shoes, about Michael Jordan); matching words with pictures. HH/EA: There will be a focus on students reading and teachers reading, and photos will be displayed on the community bulletin board. HH/EA: We will prepare and share literacy tips with parents. 35 Meadow Woods Middle School You ve Been Caught Reading Recognition: Faculty members will be given You ve Been Caught Reading tickets to give out when a student has been caught reading. Students will turn these tickets into the Media Center to be entered for a chance to win a prize. The more students are caught reading, the more chances they have to win. Principal s Pick: Mrs. Mendez will select her favorite book to book talk with the students during lunches. Pajama/Literary Character Day with your favorite book: Wear your best pajama attire or character cosplay to be comfy as you read and write throughout the day. Must be in accordance with OCPS dress code rules. Students who participate in the pajama/character day with their book will read each period during bell work time. Students not participating will complete bell work assigned by classroom teacher. MWMS Teacher s Pick: Teachers will read to students their favorite childhood picture book or the first chapter of their favorite novel in 2nd period during Bell Work time. Literacy Night: Join us from 5:30-7:30 pm for some fun literacy across the curriculum activities and the Scholastic Book Fair!! Breakfast Book Swap: From 8:45-9:15 am, students and faculty members will be invited to participate in a book swap in the Media Center. Breakfast treats will be provided and the cost to enter the Media Center is one gently-used book they are willing to donate/swap with someone else. Door Decorating Contest: Teachers and students will be encouraged to decorate their classroom door to represent this year s literacy theme, Spreading Literacy, One View at a Time. There will be prizes awarded to the first, second and third place winning teachers.

Team picks 3 of their favorite books!) *Morning News: Principal shares and reads a snippet of their book and Reading Coach shares the exciting news about Door Décor! *Magazine Monday: Classes will read from the Journey's Magazine and complete a summarizing task! *Door Decor: Classrooms will make circle maps with book recommendations, then choose and create a design for their door to look like the cover of the book their class picked. Classes will have until Thursday afternoon (1/31) to finish their door décor and it must include a student written synopsis of the book. A team of judges will walk the hallways on Friday to pick a winning door from each gradelevel for The McCoy Book Medal award. The winning class for each grade level will receive a special surprise from the Literacy Week Reading Team ϑ *Morning News: Top AR students in Kindergarten and 1st Grade will share their favorite book! AP and Science Coach will encourage students to read OUTSIDE of the preferred genre ϑ *Storyline Online: Classes will choose an actor to read to them and complete a summarizing task! *Morning News: Top AR students in 2nd Grade and 3rd Grade will share their favorite book! *Theater Thursday: Classes will read a Reader s Theater script from Reading A- Z and complete a summarizing task! *End of Day Teacher Swap: Students will line up outside classroom and swap teachers and share a great book! *Morning News: Top AR students in 4th Grade and 5th Grade will share their favorite book! Also, CRT and Instructional Coach share their favorite book character and show their books! ϑ *Fairytale Friday: Classes will choose a fairytale to read and complete a summarizing task! * Reading Builds Character Day: Students and Staff dress up as their favorite book character and share why using a collaborative structure! 37 Oakshire Elementary To launch Literacy Week, students and faculty will participate in the annual Million Minute Marathon. 15 minutes will be set aside for everyone to drop everything and read. To celebrate literacy this week the students and staff will be invited to participate in a different activity each day of the week. The theme today is Score with Books! (Students can wear a sports themed shirt) The theme is Crazy for Books! Students can wear mismatched clothes The theme is Wild about Reading! (Dress in animal print or wear a shirt with an animal picture) The theme is Hats off to your Favorite Book! ( Wear a hat or cap) The theme is Be a Star and Read! (Wear either a Star Wars themed shirt or a rock star inspired outfit)

38 Oak Hill Elementary Door Decorating Contest: -Begins -Classes will participate in a door decorating contest which features a book or focuses on the theme of literacy week. One winning class will be selected for grades K-2 and 3-5. The winning classes will be announced on February 1st and will receive a prize. Bookmark Contest: -Students create a bookmark focused on the theme of literacy week. -One bookmark winner will be selected for grades K-2 and 3-5. The winner will be announced on Friday and will receive a book. Essay Contest: -K-2 students draw pictures highlighting the importance of literacy. The winner will be announced on Friday and will receive a book and have their piece published in the school newsletter students write an essay highlighting the importance of literacy. "Food for Thought" The announcements will feature a PowerPoint presentation on the importance of literacy during the morning announcements. Faculty and staff will wear read to celebrate literacy. An oral presentation of a book will be displayed on the cafeteria screen during lunch time. Book Trivia Bonanza Students will answer trivia questions about Sunshine State books during lunch and enter their responses in a drawing. A winner (who has provided the correct answers to the questions) will be drawn on Friday and will receive a book. You re quite a character! Faculty, staff, and students are encouraged to dress up as a book character. Participants will take a group photo. Oak Hill dares to DEAR. Faculty, staff, and students will read a book or magazine from 9:15-9:30. Afterwards we will reflect on how literacy positively impacts our lives. Contest winners will also be announced.

39 Ocoee Elementary Read around the world- Experience multicultural stories from all corners of the globe. Bookmark decorating. Students create a unique design on a bookmark to mark their place in a book. Poetry celebration. Students hear, read and write Acrostic or Haiku poems. Digital literacy day- read a book online and tweet a review on a paper tweet bubbles. Review in 300 characters or less. Pajama Day - Snuggle up with a good book (flash light fun)

40 Ocoee High School Dress up day: Favorite children s book character Dive into poems about a Dominican students growing up in New York from "The Poet X" by Elizabeth Acevedo. It discusses how she lives in a body that is seen, but a voice that is not heard. Until she makes it be. Find relations with these works and understand the view of this culture. Dress up day: Favorite comic/ graphic novel character Look into the 2nd chapter of "The Hate U Give" by Angie Thomas that discusses police brutality and the Black Lives Matter movement. Understand the view of a culture that they would not always see and what they could see.
