6 City of Pembroke Pines Charter School Central Campus Sea Castle PARK RIDGE ELEMENTARY Buddy Reading - Students will read with a partner and discuss the books as they read together. Read aloud in K-5 story book characters Chill Out With A Cool Book Students will wear any type of winter gear (coats, hats, gloves, scarves) so they can warm up with a good book throughout the day. They are also encouraged to bring towels/blankets to sit outside and read. Teachers will encourage and promote reading stamina Caught Reading - Teachers and staff will give tickets throughout the day to students who are "caught" reading. Tickets will be selected from the raffle at the end of the day for varying prizes. Read aloud volunteers K-5 Read My Shirt Students will wear shirts covered with words. Students can be as creative as they like and attach words to their shirts. Teachers will be creative with lessons to teach vocabulary words and promote the use of vigorous vocabulary words. Students will be encouraged and presented with opportunities to read each other s shirts throughout the day and use their chosen vocabulary words in conversation. Picnic In the Park - Teachers will take the students outside while they read stories to the students or the students read together in small groups. Poetry Slam parent night Keep Calm and Read On All staff and students are encouraged and reminded to Wear Red to Show - We are Well- Read. Teachers will set aside a special time during the day for DEAR TIME (sustained silent reading). Administration will continue to promote and encourage students to adopt a LOVE for reading. Vocabulary/ Idiom Parade - Students will dress as an idiom or vocabulary word of their choice. Letter/Card writing to your hero Pop Open The Perfect Book Students will receive and enjoy bags of popcorn to snack on while reading and sharing books with their book buddies. Teachers will coordinate a special time during the day to team up with their book buddies. (Be sure to coordinate a time with your book buddies). Snowy Day Read In - The students will all be given milk and cookies while they read at the beginning of the day. Riddles and jokes-- Administration/Sup port K-5 Story Book Parade The Story Book Parade will be the culminating activity for Literacy Week. Each class will choose a book to read for the week and create a picture illustration of the story s plot. Teachers and students will dress up depicting characters from the book and showcase their posters during the Literacy parade. One class from each grade level will present their stories aloud to the entire school. Administration will conclude the parade and event by addressing the importance literacy.

Media Book Challenge Learners will have the opportunity to guess the number of books on the library shelves. There will be a box in the Media Center for each grade level for the learners to place their guess. Whoever guesses the closest will win a prize. Parent Readers/Parent Literacy Training- Date TBD Be a Super Reading Buddy! Compare similarities and differences between your boo and your buddy's book. Use a graphic organizer to compare the books. "Super Readers"- Dress Up Like Favorite Super Hero Crazy About Books Day Staff and learners will wear crazy socks to show how they are Crazy about Reading. Reading Buddies Intermediate learners will have the opportunity to read to primary learners. Teachers, staff, and volunteers from the community will read with students of all ages. My Favorite Book/Show and Tell: Students will bring their favorite book to school. Reading buddies will read their favorite book to their reading pals. Parent Readers/Parent Literacy Training- Date TBD Be a Super Reader! Drop everything and read! Guest readers will visit classrooms. Reada-Thon winners will be announced. Teachers can choose an activity from the A-Z Activity List provided by the reading coach Poetry readings by teachers/students during morning Look Who Grew Up Reading bulletin board (childhood photos of teachers/staff) Poem share on Announcements, Art Contest Around the Theme, D.E.A.R. (Primary- Read Aloud/Intermediat e-individual Book) Read any other form of literature that is not necessarily in a book. For example, newspapers, National Geographic, charts, graphs, online journals, Britannica Online. Teachers can also choose from a list of activities. A teacher/student will read a passage from a favorite book during AM School-wide Quick Write (If you could be any character in a book who would it be, and why?) Poem share on Announcements, Art Contest Around the Theme, Intermediate Guest Readers(Read to Primary Classes) Students can bring blankets and books and to school and read in our environmental center. Teachers can participate too! This is a great way to enjoy our weather (weather permitting). Students and staff will snuggle up with a good book, reading in their WACKY socks. 50, 000 Minutes Marathon/AR Challenge Reading Logs Read with a Buddy- pairing our classes with another class (lower/upper grade) and they will read with them. Digital Literacy Day Students and staff will read using digital resources. 50, 000 Minutes Marathon/AR Challenge Reading Logs Book report- The student will complete and present their book reports to the class. Buddy Reading Day Students and staff will Buddy Up to read their just right books. They can even dress up as TWINS! 50, 000 Minutes Marathon/AR Challenge Reading Logs A Poem in Your Pocket- Students will write a poem and carry the poem in their pockets and they will be allowed to take it out at any time and read it to classmates, teachers, or visitors. Pajama Read-In Students and staff will wear their favorite pajamas to spend the day reading. Administration and various staff members will visit classrooms to conduct readalouds. 50, 000 Minutes Marathon/AR Challenge Reading Logs Share a book outdoors- Students will bring a book outside and read in the beautiful cool weather. Vocabulary Masquerade Day Students and staff will dress up in a costume/shirt to represent a vocabulary word. 50, 000 Minutes Marathon/AR Challenge Reading Logs Book raffle- We will have a book raffle at the end of the week. Students will get the opportunity to win a book. They will collect tickets throughout the week based on their classroom behavior.

11 Pembroke Lakes Sheridan Park Dania School Sanders Park Musical Book Buffet- At the end of the day, teachers place a book on each desk to read for 6 minutes while music plays over the PA system. Then students switch to read another book when the music stops. Continue to rotate reading for 24 minutes from 1:25-1:49 when music stops. Vocabulary Parade Buddy read with partner school Olsen Middle School, teacher favorite book presentation Principal kickoff into literacy week- Principal/Vice- Principal will read a story via television Jump Jingles & Mystery Book: Coach Serdenes will use jump jingles during PE classes. He will also give clues of our mystery book during each class. Students can stop by Guidance Suite to drop off guesses before and after school by Thursday, January 21 at 2:05 PM. There will be one Mystery Clue for K thru 1st, one Clue for 2nd & 3rd and one Clue for 4th & 5th. Winners will be announced at end of day on Friday. Announcements Genre Study Story book bingo, Door decoration contest in a book theme Drop Everything and Read- Students will drop everything and read for 20 minutes 1. Students nominate favorite authors on a Favorite Author ballot during Media time. 2. Guess the number of books in the library by Thursday, January 21 at 2:05 PM. Students in 3,4, and 5th will be decorating paper sacks for Publix promoting reading. These will be delivered to Publix and used by customers. Guest Reader day, Public Library presentation, drop everything and read Shady Reading- Students bring shades to school to read outside in a shady spot Make bookmarks that promote reading. Be sure to put names on bookmarks. Partner presentation of dictionaries from Ft Lauderdale Rotary club/ living museum, famous authors Chapter Book Showcase (intermediate) Earth and Space Showcase (primary)- teachers decorate their door with the chapter book or unit of study Poetry Out Loud : Read poems, dramatize them, and discuss stanzas, mood, rhythm, pattern, & rhyme. School wide read in, PTO literacy parent training, read to a therapy dog/ favorite stuffed animal Favorite Authors Exhibit- school leadership will showcase their favorite author

Each grade level will receive a prompt and a rubric. Each teacher will select the best piece to submit for the writing contest. There will be one winner per grade level. D.E.A.R & Literacy Bingo (Ongoing) Design a bookmark related to your favorite book. Video will be played on WCUB (morning announcement)wit h community members telling how literacy changes our world. 14 Mirror Lake Embassy Creek City of Pembroke Pines Charter School- West Campus Students will wear a hat to kick off Literacy week. Students will DROP EVERYTHING and READ independently for at least 20 minutes during their specials time. Guest Reader (select classes).
