1 Hunter's Creek Middle School -Million Minute Marathon: All HCMS students will read for at least 20 minutes in their 1st period class. Our goal is to reach at least 35,000 minutes! -Morning Announcement Book Commercials: The morning announcement team will create and show book commercials that the students created for some of their favorite books. -Books for Goodwill BookWorks Drive: Through fifth period, students and teachers will donate gently used children s books for Central Florida children. Goodwill BookWorks is a local program that distribute and read books to preschoolers, kindergarteners and first-graders at local child care centers and public schools. Door Decorating Contest: Seventh period will decorate their teacher s classroom door to represent a celebration of literacy. Judging of the doors will take place during 6th period on Thursday and will be announced on the afternoon announcements. The doors will be judged on their creativity, neatness/appearance, literacy components, and that they are student created. The winning class will be given a donut party to celebrate! Stop for Literacy: To promote the Eagle Super Reader program, students will read in their Language Arts classes all day. Breakfast Book Swap: From 8:30am to 9:25am, students and faculty members will be invited to participate in a book swap in the Media Center. Breakfast treats will be provided and the cost to enter is one gently-used book they are willing to donate/swap with someone else. -Reveal Day Bookmark Winner & Top Book: Throughout the week, students will be voting for their favorite book (through Edmodo) and their favorite student-created bookmark (in the media center). The winners will be announced on Friday on Eagle Eye News. -It s Cool to Read! Ice Cream Social: Qualifying students will be invited to participate in an ice cream social at the end of the day. We will celebrate Eagle Super Reader reward card holders.

This is the 100th day of School. In the classroom, teachers will brainstorm with students 100 Reasons Why I Love Reading! Reading is Relaxing day: Pajama day, 'Cuddle Up with your Favorite Book.' Story teller in the evening; 2-2:30 p.m. is drop all other things, and read!-- site wide. Read Around the World: Bulletin board will be made with photos of teachers/staff reading around different parts of the world at famous landmarks; photo-shop of students reading alongside their teachers as well; story time in Media Center of a variety of books whose setting takes place in lands far away. Science Night: Read portion of science fiction books out loud in classrooms throughout the day; wear Star Wars or space themed t-shirts. Popcorn Friday: Poetry corner in which students read poetry into the microphone in the Media Center; class rotations for poetry read aloud in Media Center along with Poetry Pops exercises in classrooms; also, 100th day of school so teachers and staff will dress as they were 100 years old and utilize humor within their poetry exercises.

11 Lockhart Middle School Sock it to Illiteracy - We will kick off Literacy Week by wearing crazy socks to show our commitment to eliminate illiteracy. Hats Off to Literacy - Students who have earned half of their required gradelevel AR points for the year will receive a wristband in the am and can wear a hat for the day. Throughout the day the Leadership Team will visit classes to read excerpts from Dr. Seuss books (Cat in The Hat). Winning Wednesday - Students with at least 20 AR points will receive a prize at their lunches. Character Invasion - Teachers can dress up as a character from their favorite children's/adolescent literature book. Teachers who dress up can visit classes during their planning period to read and/or act out excerpts from the book. Author s Visit - Author Lauren Gibaldi will visit the school and speak to 7th grade students throughout the day about the literary process, editing, and her books. Sharon Draper Fieldtrip - Sharon Draper will be at the Edgewater branch of the public library conducting a writing workshop for Aspiring Young Writers.

29 Weeklong Activities Camelot Elementary All Week January 27th: Get Caught Reading! Teachers will be given tickets to catch students independently reading around campus. Any student around the school may be given a ticket. Not just your own students. Students can enter their tickets for a chance to win prizes in the Media Center. Camelot Minute Challenge! Students at Camelot Elementary will read 30 minutes extra today. Our entire school will Drop Everything and Read (DEAR) at 2:15 until 2:45 this afternoon. Teachers/Staff this includes you also! Crazy about Reading Day! Children wear their favorite crazy socks and Bloom Ball Activity! Children will complete their own, individual Bloom Ball. These are located in your Literacy Week bags. There are twenty-four. Each class needs to complete 24 sheets so I will be able to put together two bloom balls for each class. A different color will represent each grade level. Each bloom ball needs to include: 1) My Favorite Book is By ; 2) Each student needs to write a few sentences telling why that is his/her favorite book; 3) An illustration to represent their favorite book; 4) The student needs to include their name, grade and teacher s name. All of these items need to be placed within the pentagon shape on the paper. Then have the children cut out the entire CIRCLE neatly (Not the pentagon). I will then assemble and hang the bloom balls in the cafeteria/library. Book Buzz Game Show on Morning Announcements: Mrs. Kleier will read passages from certain books that are familiar to the children in grades Kg and First. As the grade level listens carefully, once they recognize the title of the book, they will call the library at The first class with the correct title wins a prize. I will come by later that day to give out the prizes to the children. Acrostic Poetry Day! Kg, 1st and 2nd grade teachers ONLY Your classes will create one Acrostic poem with your class. Kg your acrostic poem will be created with the word FICTION. First grade your acrostic poem will be created with the word BIOGRAPHY. Second grade your acrostic poem will be created with the word NON-FICTION. 3rd, 4th and 5th grade teachers ONLY Each student in your class will create an Acrostic Poem individually, using a favorite character name from a book they have read and enjoyed. As the students create these acrostic poems, they need to include personality traits of that character that were identified through their reading.

As the grade level listens carefully, once they recognize the title of the book, they will call the library. The first class with the correct title wins. Favorite Book Day! Children have an opportunity to show off their favorite book, author, or character by dressing in a way to represent their love of that story/person. All costumes MUST follow dress code, including no toy weapons. Each child must have the book they are representing with them at school. Book Buzz Game Show on Morning Announcements! 40 Weeklong Activities Lake Whitney Elementary School -27th is our Florida Literacy Week and the theme is Literacy Changes Our World. We will also be joining the nation in The Great Kindness Challenge as we perform as many kind deeds in one week as possible. Hats Off To Our Favorite Books! Students can wear their favorite hat and give a nod to their all-time favorite book. Students will be sharing what their favorite book/book character is with their class. (You do not need to bring in a copy of the book.) All Lake Whitney Dolphins will show kindness by saying thank you to others all day. Make Your Mark In The World! Students will be given a blank bookmark to design. These bookmarks will then be placed in random books throughout the Media Center. As a special treat, readers will find the hidden bookmark throughout the year and then pass it on to the next reader as an act of kindness. Books That Changed Our World- Trading Card Each class will decide on a favorite book they may have read together or an all-time favorite book many of the students have read. Each class will complete one Favorite Book Character Trading Card. The trading cards will be placed in an album in the Media Center so all students can read about books that changed the world and acknowledged acts of kindness. Reading Is A Super Power That Can Change Your World! Let s be MARVELous readers and wear a favorite superhero t-shirt, socks, cape or hat! (No full costumes or masks please). Each class will be setting a time to drop everything and read for 2017 seconds ~34 minutes and be super power readers. Shared reading is an act of kindness. Open Our World to New Books -Book Swap! Students can bring in one gently used age-appropriate book to trade with a classmate. Each class will designate a time during the day for participating students to select a new book to keep. What a great way to show kindness by sharing a book with a friend!

45 Windermere Elementary Million Minute Marathon: Students will DEAR for 10 minutes after the announcements. Our school data will be sent to the Just Read, Florida! Office to help determine the district with the highest level of participation. The state goal is to reach 33 million minutes and our hope is that Orange County will have the best results. Teachers will display what I m reading right now sign outside of their door, with a title that they are currently enjoying! Check out the 800 reasons why reading is important rainbow in the office! Prepare poems for poem in your pocket day (written by the students or even a famous author). Anyone caught with a poem in their pocket that they are willing to share will receive a small prize. Support Staff and administration will be given little prizes that they can reward students who are caught throughout the day. (daily) OCLS Storyteller is coming for 3 sessions for grades K-2 in the media center (guest speaker). Faye Warren, BF, FDLRS & OCPS Communication Coach /PRC Ambassador is coming as a guest speaker for grades 3-5 (classes are reading the book, Out of My Mind and will be presenting questions for her about her experience which parallels Melody in the book). Hallway Bulletin Boards: We are asking for teams (k-2) and (3-5) to work together. Choose one book that all the classes can read. Choose one standard that you can use to decorate your hallway bulletin board. We are wanting to show a progression of the standard from one grade level to another. Curl Up and Read: We are encouraging everyone to have an extended curl up and read time during your reading block on January 27th. You may choose to have students bring in a large towel or blanket to sit on to read.

48 Hillcrest Elementary I Spy Hillcrest Reading: Teachers will pass out stickers to students who are caught reading throughout the day. We will have book characters placed all around the school. Students who "spy" the characters will inform their teachers. Read aloud Day: Students will be encouraged to wear a "readable" (appropriate) shirt to school this day. We have made recordings of different staff members reading books aloud that can be accessed by all classes so teachers may show them throughout the day. Teachers may invite parents in to read aloud to students, and do some Reader's Theater with students. We will use Digital tools like Bookflix to access books online. Buddy Reading Day: Primary and Intermediate classes are paired up to read with a buddy. Poetry in a Day: Students will be encouraged to read, write, and share some poetry on this day. Each class will select one poem for the Hillcrest Poetry Quilt. Fourth and Fifth graders are going on a field trip to the Downtown to see author, Sharon M. Draper. Celebrate Literacy NIght: Parents and students will experience a variety of stories from around the world with activities based on the literature. Vocabulary Parade: Based on the book, Miss Alaineus: A Vocabulary Disaster by Debra Frasier, Teachers and students will dress up as vocabulary words. We will have a parade around the school and parents are invited.

55 Weeklong Activities Gotha Middle School Morning Announcement Book Talks: Each morning will feature a book talk on GTV. Get Caught Reading! In the morning in the gym or at lunch, students reading books will be awarded Gotha Dollars and a book fair basket raffle ticket which should get filled in and turned in to the media center as soon as they receive it. Door Decorating Contest: Each area will be assigned a genre. Teachers and students will be encouraged to decorate their classroom door in a manner that best showcases the designated genre.the winning teacher from each hallway will receive a prize. All-for-Books Donation Competition: Participating classrooms will compete in a money drive for Scholastic s One-for-Books charity. For every dollar donated, Scholastic donates a book to one of three charities. The teacher who collects the most money over the period of one week will get to spend all of their collected money at the Book Fair. The winning classes will receive a prize. Runners up will receive a portion of the proceeds in Book Fair selections for their class. Million Minute Marathon: Students will read for 20 minutes in their Language Arts classes and any other classes that wish to participate. Teachers will fill out a spreadsheet and submit their totals. Breakfast Book Swap: From 8:30am to 9:25, students and faculty members will be invited to participate in a book swap in the Media Center. Breakfast treats will be provided by our Partners in Education and the cost to enter the Media Center is one gently-used book they are willing to donate/swap with someone else. "Read My Shirt" Students and teachers wear shirts with school appropriate wording. Preference given to those with book references or quotes. Gotha Dollars will be awarded. Ted Ed: Interested teachers can participate in certain Ted Ed videos about literature. Links and activities will be sent out via by January 20th.

56 Poster Contest: Students will design and decorate a poster that either showcases a favorite book or a poster which encourages kids to read. Each category will have a winner and a runner up. Posters should be pleasing to eye, spelled correctly, and should be original and creative. Turn posters in by today for judging and display. Literary Character Day: Gotha Middle School will show their true character by dressing up as their favorite literary character. Those participating must carry the book of the character they have chosen. Teachers are encouraged to create bookmarks with information about their character. Prizes will be awarded for Most Creative, Best Dressed, and Best Attention to detail. Gotha Reads! : We will follow a Wednesday bell schedule. For the last 45 minutes of the day ALL Gotha Middle School students will read silently in their classes and/or teachers will read their favorite children s story to their classes.
