1 School District of Indian River County Guest Readers schools are inviting guest readers to share their love of reading with students. Reading Buddies Students from different grades read with each other. Reading Oath Elementary students with recite the oath and promise to read, read read! Poetry Contest each school can submit two entries per grade level. District winners will be announced for K-1, 2-3, 4-5, 6-8, Prizes provided by Renaissance Learning. Please make sure student names and grade level is on poem. Poems must be submitted in digital form (typed or scanned) to by January 29, PLEASE type Poetry Contest 2016 in the SUBJECT line. WOW Day! Wonderful World of Words Students select an extraordinary word they would add to their speaking vocabulary and use in their writing. The word is written on a card along with the meaning. Students attempt to use the word at least 5 times each day for one week. Digital Literacy Day Students meet authors through digital media such as the links listed: Celebrate Literacy Photo Contest each school is invited to submit one photograph that shows students celebrating literacy. One school winner at elementary and secondary will be announced. Photos must be submitted in digital form to Laurie.Young@indianriverschools.org by January 29, PLEASE type Photo Contest 2016 in the SUBJECT line.

2 Beachland Elementary School Guest Readers teachers invite readers Starbooks Café a variety of genres read aloud for 20 minutes Kick Off- Beach Blanket Books: Whole school outside from 2:00-3:00 reading. Color Your World with Reading (focus on poetry) Students dress in assigned color: 5 th orange, 4 th yellow, 3 rd purple, 2 nd green, 1 st red and K blue. Book Party Pick Anything Read To Yourself! Book Buddy Day students read to their buddies. Grades: 5 &b 2, 4 & 1, 3 & K Dress Day Jersey Day Football is like reading

3 Citrus Elementary School Guest Readers - Leadership Team will be guest readers throughout the week Note Home - An awareness flyer to go home to all households Book Jackets - Students will make Book Jackets for a favorite book during literacy center time. Each teacher will select two and turn them in. These will be displayed in the cafeteria. Book jacket must be colorful, with story elements written on each of the flaps. Reading Rainbow - broadcast at Lunchtime in the cafeteria Book Exchange* - Let your students know that they can bring a book from home and exchange it for a new one on the cart during lunchtime Book Buddies - Grade Chair needs to coordinate with the other classes and the times for your grade level

6 Glendale Elementary School D.E.A.R. Start off the week be dedicating 30 minutes to reading for pleasure. All students and teachers will drop everything and read. Please choose a time that works best for your schedule. Guest Readers Please schedule a guest reader to visit your classroom. If you do not have one contact Michelle Banack or Kim Slade and we will arrange someone to read to your class. Remember, high school students who need volunteer hours are great resources. Eat a Book Back by popular demand! Please plan on reading a book to your class that lends itself to a snack. For example, Superfudge! Buddy Up Find a buddy class and block time out to get together and partner read. Weather permitting, feel free to take the students outside or anywhere that would make it feel special. Dress Up Day Dress as your favorite storybook character. We will not have a parade as we did this for Halloween. However, feel free to get with your grade level if you would like to have your own parade

7 Indian River Academy THEME: Read S more Books Kindergarten: Share around the campfire. Three students per day orally share a book/topic using First, Next, and Last around a campfire. 4 th Grade: dividing class into groups-write directions How to make a s more? - exchange directions with another group-try to make using ONLY directions given- when no one is able to do it, make class set of writing-make the s more and enjoy! 5 th Grade: Doing a short novel study with Hatchet by Gary Paulsen. Cultural Arts: Music: sing around the campfire songs, Art: outdoor and nature integration of literacy and the arts, Media: reading around the fire, PE: using physical movement to navigate Guest readers throughout the week. (assigned to certain grade levels/rooms) Kindergarten: Scavenger Hunt: Like write the room. Students go hunting for words that have been placed outside & write it on their recording sheet/checklist. 1 st grade: Decorate doors with camping theme. 2 nd Grade: sequence writing prompt about making a s more, camping, etc. 3 rd Grade: read aloud under a sheet w/ flashlights (scary story) Homework: write a spooky story w/ parents-share Campfire circle Thursday 5 th Grade: Door decorating with Camping Themes (teachers will continue to read the book each day) Kindergarten: Reading under the stars. Students bring pillows and flashlights to find words on stars placed on the ceiling. Students try to find the word based on clues given by the teacher (sight words/cvc/nonsense words) 1 st Grade: star gazing sight word search

8 2 nd Grade: Create story, If You Give a Moose a Marshmallow 3 rd Grade: Students write about a camping trip. Show a camping picture to help brainstorm the process. Make camping books with illustrations as a class. Kindergarten: Writer s Workshop- students write about things they need for a camping trip. Make backpacks w/ the things they need. 2 nd Grade: Small groups write ghost stories, emphasizing character POV s using dialogue and different voices. 3 rd Grade: Continue writing from day before. GUEST READER EVENT: 9:30 1:30 IRA: Family Literacy Night (ALL parents invited and community) 5:30 7:00 Boy Scout Troop to Kick Off Night: We will have a proper salute, and they will give a short demonstration about camping safety (tent set up on stage) Hamburgers/Hotdog dinner served in cafeteria throughout evening Outside on Hardcourt: Each Community Member will have tents set up at their locations with seating area using hay, chairs, etc Campfire style storytelling, literacy activities, engaging parents in cooperative reading with their child. 11 Osceola Magnet School 1000 hour School-wide Reading Challenge- incentive: Mr. Simpson will be eating fried worms to support the book How to Eat Fried Worms Motivational Posters every class will create a motivational poster o help promote reading. Posters will be displayed around the school Create Bookmarks every student will create a book mark to give to a classmate. Students will make two: one to give and one to keep High School athletes visit OMS in their uniforms to promote literacy. Book Buddies activities. Dress Up Day Teachers dress up as story book characters to promote literacy. School-wide Reading Challenge hours are tallied and Literacy Celebration by Mr. Simposn eating fried worms.

12 Pelican Island Elementary Interactive Collaborative Learning Classroom (ICLC) utilized for cross curriculum units of study PK-5. Doors decorated with each teachers college alma mater to recognize how literacy helped them to be able to become teachers. Guess Who Is Reading Bulletin Board Book Reviews Students write a review of their favorite book and share it with the school on morning announcements. Reading PALS weekly with a theatre group every Monday for PK-2 nd. reading 30 minutes of pleasure I-Station Olympics(all students all classes 60 min. minimum total for day) Each intermediate class will partner with a primary class and have Buddy Reading for thirty minutes. reading 30 minutes of pleasure AR Olympics Literacy Night with Movie Night. Open House for our Parent Resource Room and our new ICLC.

13 Rosewood Magnet School Media Center Give Away Create a rap, song, or poem that reflects what he/she/class has learned about a core knowledge topic. Mystery Book- Three clues to a book will be given on afternoon announcements. Students will try to figure out the Book s title based on the clues. The answer will be given on the next day s morning announcements. Create Comic Strips using your own photos or Super Heroes Poetry Readings that can be recorded and played in the cafeteria or PAW Book Talks- Sunshine State Readers/Sunshine State Young Readers Association Decorate your Door with the favorite character/book/author Book Swap Bookmarks: Book Swap Create a Board game with questions from your favorite book or author Book Swap Guest Readers Literacy Scavenger Hunt Invent a machine that has to do with books and reading. Draw a plan, picture, or construct it.

18 Vero Beach High School Guest Readers High school students will read to younger readers. Book Collection VBHS Fighting Indian Students will collect gently used books to donate to the Lil Indians at Vero Beach Elementary. Book Marks book marks promoting Literacy Week will be handed out to students on campus.
