1 Celebrate Literacy Week, Florida January 22 to January 26 Celebrate Literacy Photo Contest post photos that demonstrate the theme "Find Yourself in a Book!" on Twitter. The photo with the most likes at the end of the week will win a Books-A-Million gift card. One winning classroom, for each grade level K-12. #IRCLW Guest Readers schools will invite guest readers to share their love of reading with students. January 26 Read Across the District - EVERYONE (PK-12), district wide, will stop and read for 30 minutes as determined by each school. Book Walk Experience the book, Scardy Squirrel by Mélanie Watt beginning by walking through the story. Sponsored by The Learning Alliance Vero Beach as part of the Moonshot Moment. Students try to guess which book. *Door Decorating Classes choose a book and scene to decorate their classroom door for all to see *Buddy Reading K and 4, 5 and 2, 3 and 1 *Guest Readers - Schools will be inviting guest readers to share their love of reading with students. *John s Island Books- Classes will focus all week on one of the books donated last year by John s Island Foundation Jan. 22 Begin above activities Jan. 23 Read My Shirt Day: Students will wear an appropriate shirt with text. Students will read one another s shirts throughout the day. Jan. 24 Poetry Appreciation Day- Grade levels will use the website Poem in Your Pocket to create activities for the day. Jan. 26 Beach Blanket Reading- The entire school will go outside and read on beach blankets for 30 minutes (Teachers, guest readers, or independent reading.)

Poem in Your Pocket Students all have to come with a poem of theirchoice in their pocket and can be asked at any given time to produce the poem and read it to their classmates or teacher. Some students also read theirpoems to the whole school over the intercom system. WOW (Wonderful World of Words) Day! Posters will be displayed on doors to celebrate literacy in our school. Doors will be judged and the class winner at each grade level will win a popsicle party. 10 Osceola Magnet School Ongoing School Events Schoolwide reading challenge - Mr. Simpson will be challenging all Explorers to read every day. Our theme this year is bedtime stories. Students get 10 points for every book they read and 20+ points for every book their parent reads to them. If the family reads together, it s 10 points for every person including the reader. A parent reading a book to 3 students earns 40 points (3 students and the parent!). If students read with a friend on the phone or with grandma on Skype 10 points for every person who hears or reads the book. Story Videos OMS teachers will be recorded reading a bedtime story along with a quick reading tip to support positive reading. The students can watch the video at home in the evenings for additional points. Read reading quotes - read during morning announcements Book donation We will ask every student to donate 1 used book that they no longer want and we will donate them to a special organization to help children in need. This will be a wonderful community event Jan. 22 Book Review video a few students talking about their favorite book. This can be played on morning announcements or maybe put in a separate file in the common folder to view whenever it is best for classes Jan. 23 Guest readers maybe teachers from another classroom visit/read a special story during their planning time (ex: 4 th grade teacher on their planning could read to a 2 nd grade class) Jan. 24 Guess the Book classrooms vote for 1 favorite book and post clues about the book out on their door for everyone in the school to guess what the book is throughout the week. Classes will reveal their mystery book on Friday by displaying the book as the final clue to the mystery book Jan. 25 Jan. 26 Book Buddies - Book buddies will be given the opportunity to work together to support each other in literacy activities. Pajama Day School wide pajama day to celebrate literacy OMS Reading - OMS will participate in a school wide bed time reading School Wide Reading Challenge The number of books students have read will be tallied and a literacy celebration will occur if the reading goal is achieved.
11 January 22 Pelican Island Elementary Door Decorating Contest: Find Yourself in An Environmental Book School Wide Photo Contest January 23 January 24 Oh, The Places You ll Go! Dress for Success Day: Each class will read this book out loud and have a day of Success! We will have students and adults model dressing for success the day before on the morning announcements. Buddy Up Wednesday: Each class will have a buddy class and they will spend time together reading to one another. January 25 January 26 Book Swap Thursday: Students are encouraged to bring a book from home to give to a classmate and they will also receive a book. Guest Reader Day All classrooms will have a guest reader from the community. Read on the Green All classes will take their students outside and read outside for 30 minutes. PIE s 2 nd Annual Literacy Night: Literacy Under the Stars Mon-Fri On Going activities Cafeteria: Story On Line, a different book each day will be read. Morning announcements: Guess the Book and the Reader: A short passage will be read aloud by a school employee and each class will send a daily guessing the book title and the reader.

13 Sebastian Elementary School Ongoing School Events Jan. 22 Guest Readers will read to classes to share their love of reading. Book Buddies Day Classes will pair up to read books and do literacy activities. Jan. 23 Jan. 24 Book Talk Tuesday! Classes will have students share favorite books in book talks in class, on the announcements, and on Flipgrid. Reading Rainbow (at lunch). Students will bring favorite books to read at lunch. Parents are invited to join students for lunch to read with them. Free Book Giveaway! Jan. 25 Put Yourself in a Book! Students and teachers will come dressed as their favorite character or historical figure. Teachers can take selfies of students to put up in their wing. (Can enter District Selfie Contest). Students should bring the book to match their character. (Sneakers Only) Friday Jan 26 Read Across the District! Each school and department will select a 30-minute time block to participate. EVERYONE at the site will stop and read for the designated 30 minutes. *Sebastian Elementary will DROP Everything and READ from 9:00 9:30.
