1 Duval Public Schools Literacy Week Activities Secondary Reading and ELA 27, 2017 Literacy Changes Our World Monday,, 2017 Superintendent s All Star Literacy Week All Stars Go All Out for Reading! LAUNCH LITERACY CAMPAIGN BY CELEBRATING FAMILY LITERACY WEEK In assembly or classrooms, schools play Dr. Vitti s launch video and follow up with details of the campaign including districtwide incentives, school-level incentives, classroom monitoring charts etc... Drop Everything and Read 1:30-2:00 every student kicks off their goal with independent reading in classroom (all other campaign reading to be completed at home). Make DCPS trend by using #DCPSREADS- Capture exciting activities through social media during ELA class-30 second post daily,, 2017 Star Readers! CELEBRITY READING DAY Schools reach out to local celebrities to read their favorite book to a class. Readers might include Board Members, local police or fireman, parents, crossing guard, maintenance, business partners, etc,, 2017 All Star Book Share Read It Forward Jax Book Swap/Drive/Block Party Bring one to take one Organize in media center/gym and coordinate by grade Engage business partners to donate books for students who can t bring a book,, 2017 Read Together and SHINE! Family Literacy Day Schedule a portion of the school day, breakfast, lunch, afterschool, to host a Family Literacy Event,, 2017 Starring YOU as your Favorite Book Character Book Character Parade Students come to school dressed as their favorite literary character and holding their favorite book Suggested: students parade through each classroom and the parent-filled auditorium Possible follow-up activities: read-a-loud part of book in groups, write a paragraph or create a comic strip summarizing your book, teacher read-a-loud of his/her favorite book

Inspirational Literacy Message Students create a literacy message of their own that expresses how they feel about reading. Shelfie Selfie District employees, teachers, and administrators take selfies and pictures of the books they are currently reading. These are displayed for students and/or other employees to match the selfies to the correct books. Literacy Poster Contest Each class will create a poster that promotes literacy on the wall in the hall, once class will be selected as the winner. A Bunch of Idioms Dress up like your favorite idiom. Hold your horses. It s raining cats and dogs. The ball is in your court. Curiosity killed the cat. asked Catch Tigers Reading If you are caught reading a book by Admin, your name will go in for a drawing, let s get caught reading Tigers! Literacy Changed Our World Collage District employees, teachers, administrators, and students create collages on how literacy impacts/has impacted their world. asked Book Swap Teachers and students will bring old books to the library to receive a ticket on they can use their ticket for another book of choice. Reading is My Superpower Dress up as your favorite super hero and bring in a book that you think the super hero is currently reading. Be able to explain why your super hero would be reading the chosen book. Score for Reading Everyone wear their favorite team jersey/tshirt
3 Asa Philip Randolph Career Academies If there is a video or audio presentation by Dr. Vitti, we will play that during our morning announcements or during ELA classes. We will have a door decorating competition. The teachers will get students to plan and decorate their doors, using the theme as the foundation to build upon. Doors must be completed by at 3:25. Doors will be judged by an impartial group, and the winner will be announced on morning. Doors will remain decorated all week. Huffman will be in charge of this activity. Name that author. During the morning announcements, we will give a detailed description of an author, and students will have until lunch time to turn in their answers. The winner will receive a gift. Omega Smith will be in charge of this. Each ELA teacher will create 3 trivia questions about books and/or authors to use as a bell ringer. Each winner would receive candy and have their name announced over the PA system at the end of the day. All original poems, raps, or children s stories will be turned into ELA teachers by 3:25 on. Teachers will turn these into Omega Smith. A faculty member and at least one student will do a book talk on their favorite book over the PA system. During ELA classes, teachers may choose to have students do book talks. Students will design bookmarks and turn them into their ELA teachers who will give them to Mrs. Wade by the end of the day. A winner will be chosen and all book marks will be displayed in the Media center on. Submitted book marks will be judged by an impartial group, and the winner will be announced on during the morning Poetry, Rap, and Short Story Slam. The top winner in each category will be recognized and receive an award. Immediately after school, we will have a room set up like a coffee house. We will encourage students to dress like the 60 s for our poetry slam. Winners will read their winning entry and any other student who wants to read will be allowed to. The Slam will end at 4:45. Mrs. Buchanan is in charge of this. Shelfie Selfie Our teachers and administrators take a selfie and a picture of the book they are currently reading. These are displayed; and students and other employees must match the selfie to the correct book. We could set these up in the lunchroom or media center, and teachers could bring their students to the media center to vote, or students could vote during lunch, OR we could simply have a list of books and a list of teachers and students can match them, turn in the sheet and the student who matches the most correctly wins. Mrs. Buchanan and Huffman will be in charge of this.
4 Atlantic Coast High School Baldwin Middle-Senior High Monday Door decorating contest announced: Winning classroom will get trophy! Judging on. IG #raysread contest announced. Winners announced. Book Swap Announced. Book Mark Day: Teachers and students will create book marks to use while reading. Book marks should represent something to do with literacy. For example, it may depict a scene from a book, a genre, an author, a reading strategy, etc. Author Spotlight: Poet Laureate/ Nobel Prize for Literature Voting for AC Movie Night: Which movie was better than the book? (Survey Monkey). Book Swap: Media Center Door Decorating Day: Classes will pick a literary theme and decorate a class room door. For example, doors can be book related, strategy related, genre related, or they may feature an author, etc. All Teachers will take 5 minutes to discuss a book that changed their lives with each class. Author Quote Banners: All Lunches. Commercial Day: Teachers and students will create posters that will sell others on reading. Posters can feature a favorite book, theme, etc. Author Spotlight: Who are we reading? ELA teachers. Character Dress Up Day AC Movie Night In auditorium, 2:15-4 p.m. Book Swap: During lunch, students will choose a book for themselves. Shelfie Selfie after students choose a new book, they will take a selfie with the book. Pictures will be displayed in the front lobby. Door Decorating Contest Judging, 1st period, winner announced 2 nd block during #raysread winner announced Local Bookmark Roll Out 25 Reader Luncheon- Media Center. Character Parade: Students will dress up like their favorite character from their favorite book (fiction or non-fiction). They will bring their favorite book with them and parade through the halls carrying their book and showing off their love of reading. DAILY: Genre Study: A different short story or article will be chosen for each day. Starting with the morning announcements, a snippet will be read. Other snippets will be read at the beginning of each period via the intercom. The ending will be read during the afternoon Guest Readers: Local celebrities and community members will read a text of their choice to groups of students. Book Swap: Books will be collected in the front lobby. During lunch on, students will be able to choose a new book, whether they brought one or not.

This will be coordinated through theater classes. Guest Readers: High school students will read to younger students during ELA classes. Community members (parents, medical professionals, etc.) will visit some classes to read from their favorite books. Book character Dressup day and costume contest. Students must bring the book to be featured on the lunch time catwalk. We will also do a version of this in the English classrooms with volunteer students. 6 Englewood High School Talk School Principal will be on the Morning News and share an excerpt from her favorite book! (Additional staff and students will be featured throughout the week.) Administration will visit several classes throughout the day to share their favorite novels! Literacy Night at Englewood Parents will be invited to a special Literacy Night to learn about Achieve3000, ilit, TCA, and overall Reading Strategies that they can work on with their children at home! ESOL parents will be exposed to a separate Literacy Presentation on the fundamental English skills needed to acclimate to the United States. Let s Run for Literacy! Students and Faculty will have the opportunity to preregister for a run that will take place during last block to celebrate literacy. Talk Character Take-Over Day A silhouette of all characters studied in ELA classes Quarter II will be posted outside of A-wing. During their ELA classes, students will post different generating statements/questions next to the characters arm, hands, legs, feet, head, etc., with an explanation. Talk A Novel that Tells my Story A bulletin board will be placed inside of the cafeteria with die cuts of books. Students will write what their stories would be called, along with quick explanations of why. *Students can also include the name of a novel that is similar to the one they would write.. 8 Mandarin High School Paxon SAS Monday Each administrator will give 5 students 25 HERO points each day if they catch the student reading during lunch. The class with the highest Achieve 3000 average and highest increase in Lexile at the end of the week will receive a prize! quarter to discuss the book. Ed White EWMAL Reads! Family Literacy Week Launch. Teachers and students will be encouraged to capture reading activities and use #EWMALReads on daily social media post. Launch Mannequin Book Cover Challenge due on th Principal will use school messenger to encourage parents, students, faculty and other stakeholders to Stop, Drop & Read for at least 20 minutes every day. EWMAL Book Heroes! Give One, Get One Book swap Faculty & staff and students will be encouraged to bring gently used books to school for a book drive in the cafeteria during lunches. Students who bring in books to donate will receive Hero points for each book given or taken in the swap. Speed Date a Book! Commanders Read English teachers will conduct speed dating with books sessions in their classes to put a book in each child s hands. English and Reading classes will Stop, Drop & Read for 15 minutes during each Period. Book Cover Mannequin Challenge! Plant your Roots Students in art class will construct 3 trees around the school the week prior. During English and reading classes, students will create Root cards to add to the trees. Students from journalism will take pictures of teachers reading their favorite books the week before and post them here and on the online school magazine. The students will add pictures throughout the week of students that get caught reading. Door Decorating Teachers will decorate their doors like their favorite books. A selection committee will choose the best door and award a prize. Get Caught Reading! - Kick-off of literacy week with special morning announcement about literary inspiration. Every first period class will showcase a threeminute pro-literacy message for their morning warm-up. All Star Book Share! - Students will bring in a used book from home to donate or swap for another gently used book at a book share event during lunch later in the week. -Literacy Commercials - Students will create book trailers for books or stories that they Showcase Literacy: Poetry Slam! Students are encouraged to participate in our Poetry Slam! The event will be held at 6pm in the Wolfson Auditorium.
