It gets the kids out of their comfort zones and engaged. Books are a lot like food - they won t know if they like something until they try it! If your name is chosen (read the announcements), stop by the media center to pick out a new book that you get to keep! Watch each day for the winners! Literacy Poster Contest Students are encouraged to create a poster representing their favorite character, book or author. Please turn posters into the media center by! Winners announced during Literacy Night 5:30 p.m. February Guess Who? Contest Ever wonder about your teachers favorite books? We ll have pictures of their favorite books and you get to match them to the teacher. Stop by the media center (any day this week) to enter the Guess Who? Contest! We re Crazy about Literacy Show others that you re crazy about reading by wearing your favorite crazy socks to celebrate literacy week. Literacy Poster Contest posters today Vocabulary Word Dress-up Day Students may wear creative attire that depicts a vocabulary word, and the word must be displayed on the costume. Vocabulary words need to be school appropriate and not scary. Teachers are encouraged to dress up as a vocabulary word or an idiom. Score a Touchdown with Literacy Wear your favorite jersey to score a touchdown with literacy. Join us for the DeLand Middle School Literacy Night from 5:30 6:30 p.m. in the Media Center. Hunt for a good book at the Book Exchange Wear camo to demonstrate that you love to hunt for good books! 10 Through The Poet s Eyes: To promote interest in the world of literacy through POETRY. Spanish students will enjoy using their imaginations to create the world that is seen through the poet's eyes. Student will use Spanish poetry with English translations by Pablo Neruda, a Chilean poet. ODA A LA ESPERANZA, ODE TO HOPE. Spanish is a rhythmic language that becomes even more rich through poetry. Take a View Through the Looking Glass: Health students will design and read an eye test used to test vision abilities. 15 School Name: DeLand High School Door Decorating Contest: Classes will have the opportunity to decorate their door to depict any form of literacy, starting Today, through Wednesday of this week. Bulletin board paper can be obtained from the media center. Doors will be judged on the following criteria: artwork, design is well-executed and clearly depicts the literacy, and originality. Judging begins first period on Thursday. Student participants in the 1 st, 2 nd, 3 rd winning classrooms will receive a donut party. Teacher of the winning classes will receive coffee and a donut delivered to their door. Bookmark Contest: Starting today, Monday through Wednesday of this week, students will have the opportunity through art classes or individually to create an original artwork bookmark depicting any form of literacy. Bookmark must be rectangular 3 X 9. Bookmarks must be turned into the media center by the end of the day (2:00pm) Wednesday. Bookmarks will be judged on the following criteria: artwork, design is well executed and clearly depicts the literacy, and Originality. Bookmark back should include student s name and grade. 18 School Name: Spruce Creek High School Open the Door to Reading and Spread Literacy One View at a Time: Door Decorating Do you want to win lunch?! Sign-up at the front desk in the media center to decorate a door with a team of up to 5 students. Ask a teacher if you can decorate their door (the teacher will win lunch too). Then decorate! The theme for the doors is Spreading Literacy One View at a Time. Doors will be judged based on creative use of materials, creative interpretation of the theme and connection to the subject area of the classroom. Doors can be decorated starting Thursday 1/24, but they must be complete by the end of lunch on 1/28 to be judged! Do you have books at home that you have already read? Would you like to swap them with other students in order to get new-to-you books? Bring in your books to the media center anytime between now and lunch on Wednesday 1/30. For each book you bring, you will receive a ticket to come back to the book swap to get a book. The book swap will take place during lunch on Thursday 1/31. Teacher Read Aloud and Drop Everything and Read Teachers will be encouraged to spend 5 minutes of each class all day to read aloud their favorite poem or a section from their favorite book and engage in a brief discussion about how that book impacted them. Ask your teachers about their favorite book! Teachers are then encouraged to provide students with time each class period to read a book of their choice. It can be 10 minutes up to the whole period. Ask your teachers if they will be participating! Bookmarks and Posters All students are encouraged to create a bookmark or poster (hand drawn or created on a computer) using any template found online or on plain paper and turn it in to the media center before the end of the day Friday. One bookmark and one poster will be chosen to win a gift card and will be scanned and printed and turned into a bookmark that we will distribute or a poster we will display. Poetry Out Loud Students will compete in the school-wide contest for Poetry-Out-Loud to see who will advance to the state level competition. The contest will take place in the media center immediately after school. Students, parents and the community are welcome! Poetry Out Loud participants will be visiting select classrooms during the day to share their poems with classes. Teachers are encouraged to share their favorite poem with students on this day. Book Swap Students who have contributed to the Book Swap are invited back during lunch to select books from the collection. Literacy Celebration Pajama Party! This all day in-school field trip.
