1 Duval Public Schools Literacy Week Activities Secondary Reading and ELA 27, 2017 Literacy Changes Our World,, 2017 Superintendent s All Star Literacy Week All Stars Go All Out for Reading! LAUNCH LITERACY CAMPAIGN BY CELEBRATING FAMILY LITERACY WEEK In assembly or classrooms, schools play Dr. Vitti s launch video and follow up with details of the campaign including districtwide incentives, school-level incentives, classroom monitoring charts etc... Drop Everything and Read 1:30-2:00 every student kicks off their goal with independent reading in classroom (all other campaign reading to be completed at home). Make DCPS trend by using #DCPSREADS- Capture exciting activities through social media during ELA class-30 second post daily,, 2017 Star Readers! CELEBRITY READING DAY Schools reach out to local celebrities to read their favorite book to a class. Readers might include Board Members, local police or fireman, parents, crossing guard, maintenance, business partners, etc,, 2017 All Star Book Share Read It Forward Jax Book Swap/Drive/Block Party Bring one to take one Organize in media center/gym and coordinate by grade Engage business partners to donate books for students who can t bring a book,, 2017 Read Together and SHINE! Family Literacy Day Schedule a portion of the school day, breakfast, lunch, afterschool, to host a Family Literacy Event,, 2017 Starring YOU as your Favorite Book Character Book Character Parade Students come to school dressed as their favorite literary character and holding their favorite book Suggested: students parade through each classroom and the parent-filled auditorium Possible follow-up activities: read-a-loud part of book in groups, write a paragraph or create a comic strip summarizing your book, teacher read-a-loud of his/her favorite book

4 Baldwin Middle-Senior High dupont Middle School Book Mark Day: Teachers and students will create book marks to use while reading. Book marks should represent something to do with literacy. For example, it may depict a scene from a book, a genre, an author, a reading strategy, etc. Door Decorating Day: Classes will pick a literary theme and decorate a class room door. For example, doors can be book related, strategy related, genre related, or they may feature an author, etc. Commercial Day: Teachers and students will create posters that will sell others on reading. Posters can feature a favorite book, theme, etc. Book Swap: During lunch, students will choose a book for themselves. Shelfie Selfie after students choose a new book, they will take a selfie with the book. Pictures will be displayed in the front lobby. Character Parade: Students will dress up like their favorite character from their favorite book (fiction or non-fiction). They will bring their favorite book with them and parade through the halls carrying their book and showing off their love of reading. Genre Study: A different short story or article will be chosen for each day. Starting with the announcements, a snippet will be read. Other snippets will be read at the beginning of each period via the intercom. The ending will be read during the afternoon Guest Readers: Local celebrities and community members will read a text of their choice to groups of students. Book Swap: Books will be collected in the front lobby. During lunch on students will be able to choose a new book, whether they brought one or not. Book a Day On the announcements, one student will highlight their favorite book to read and give the theme or central idea of the book. Reading Day During lunchtime, 8 th grade students will have an opportunity to read to 6 th graders to help them develop a love for reading. Data Chat Day Students will have an opportunity to get their lexile data and set goals to obtain the lexile they want to be a college student and for career goals. Ms. Rorrer, 8 th Grade ELA teacher, colors her hair a different color each day of the week (coincides with our Guidelines for Success Color themes). Bulletin Board displays in main office and media center promoting Literacy. Library Field Trip to Jax Beach Public Library 7 th Grade Class (ongoing each ).

8 Jams Weldon College Preparatory Middle School Door Decorating Contest Teachers will allow either 1 st Block or 5 th Block students the opportunity to decorate their room door with a book cover representing their favorite character. Launching Literacy Week: Literacy Changes Our World Students can start bringing in books for the book drive- Books from Bucs Pre-selected students will write messages in gently used books that will be donated. The books with inspiring messages of hope will be on a bulletin board and students can try to match the selfie to the correct book. ** Student Shelfie Selfie Students can also take a selfie posing with his/her favorite novel or novel he/she is currently reading, submit it to his/her language arts teacher, and the teacher can post to a student bulletin board. Book Fair -Media Center Announcements: Author and Book Highlight TV News :Hawk Talk: Literacy Spotlight One student per grade level brings their favorite book and shares on Book Cover Doors/Posters Literacy Trivia (Lunch) Crazy Socks and Boots Day Teachers and/or Students will create a book cover door or poster to hang outside of their classroom to showcase a book of their choosing. 13 given to a local church to be boxed and donated. The Write Club will host an essay contest about reading, tied to this year s theme. The winner will be posted on a bulletin board for the club, and the top 3 essayists will receive an honor. Inform Students/Staff that they can bring in selfies of themselves reading a book to post to the Selfie-Shelfie Bulletin Board (Yearbook staff can assist/njhs too). Post in a central location. (This can be announced early to teachers and students) gallery walk to see the different books. Literacy trivia-question displayed during lunch. Answers submitted and winners get prize. Shelfie-Selfie: students will pose for a photo with their favorite book during lunch. Students who bring a book will get a treat along with a copy of their picture. Students will vote for their favorite teacher book spine poem. The winning teacher will get a prize. Mini-book report raffle will take place. Launch of the Door Decoration Contest Launch of Donate a Book to a Daycare or Elementary School the section that donates the most books that will go to an elementary school or daycare will win ice cream Reading Partners : NJHS and/or other groups of students partner with students/classes from Twin Lakes Elem School and read to a few classes in the (before our school begins). Door Decorating Begins: Decorate your door to represent a novel or an author. Best doors win prizes. Fathers of different sections to come and talk about their favorite books and why. Book Swap: where the students bring in books at the start of the day, they get a ticket for the number of books they bring in and then can pick up the same number of books later in the day from a "swap" table. Students draw a picture of their favorite idiom and wear around their neck. Silent Sustained Reading: Thirty minutes during one day of Literacy week- whole school shuts down for 30 minutes to readteacher included. Million $ Word Students choose a word they don t think people know to wear around their necks. They have to teach the word to teachers and have their necklace signed. The person with the most signatures gets a prize. Teacher Character Dress Up: Teachers/Students dress as characters from a novel and the students have to guess who they are. Door Judging Contest Students wear a superhero t-shirt and bring their favorite novel and take a selfie Teachers dress up as their favorite character Door Decorating Judged

(K-5) Students in grades K-5 will have an opportunity to swap a book for the week. Drop Everything and Read! At 1:35 pm, every student and adult in the building will stop everything and read for 20 minutes. Literacy Changed Our World Door Decorating Contest Teachers will solicit students to create a design/collage to decorate their doors with the theme Literacy Changed Our World. Book Mania Bring in a book to swap during lunch. You can swap with another student or swap with the cart of books. This will continue all week during lunch periods. Our Favorite Book (K- 5)! Each class will pick out their favorite book. Teacher will conduct a read aloud. After read aloud, students will respond to literature Why is my favorite book. Our Favorite Book (6-8)! ELA students in grades 6-8 will pick their favorite book and create a #hashtag to promote that book. They will write one sentence to explain their #hashtag Leaders are Readers Faculty, staff, and students will write the name of their favorite author and book on a poster and sign their names. Interactive Read Aloud (K-2)! Students in grades K-2 will have an exciting of reading adventures. Teachers will visit classrooms and do an exciting read aloud. Interactive Read Aloud (3-8)! Teachers will employ an interactive read aloud strategy where they read a portion of their content text aloud, randomly pause allowing students to say the next word, thereby engaging students in the read aloud process. Wear It and Read Students, faculty and staff will wear T-shirts that can be read. We Pledge to Read! (K-5) Teachers and students will take the reading pledge. They will promise to read, grow, and enjoy reading every day. Students will decorate a thematic bookmark to celebrate literacy week. Shirts with Words & Tee-Shirt All students and adult staff will wear shirts with words on them to be read throughout the day. Put On Your Thinking Hat Students and teachers are encouraged to wear their craziest hat in support of reading. Book Swap! (K-5) Students in grades K-5 will swap back the books swapped earlier in the week and have a 3 minute conversation about the book. Poetry Reading, Writing, and Sharing Students in all grade levels will be given the opportunity to read, write, and/or share a poem of their choice. Reading is My Super Power Dress up as your favorite super hero and carry a book that the super here would read. Must have costume and book approved prior to dressing up. Door Decorating Contest: Teachers will decorate their doors to represent their favorite book or artist with the help of their homeroom students. Prize to the winning door. Get Caught Reading: Students are encouraged to read independently in areas outside of ELA/Reading. Students caught reading will be rewarded a raffle ticket. Prizes will be awarded by random selection at the end of the day.
