Donate a Treasure Decorate your Space! Stop by the 5th floor cafeteria throughout the week to check out our literary quote banner! Feel free to add a favorite quote, title of a novel, or short story to share your love for literature with the district. Employees and students have an Instagram picture taken with a favorite book and the hashtag #DCPSLIT. Specialists will be out visiting schools to snap pictures with students and employees! Spend the day dressed up as a mash-up of your two favorite characters from different pieces of literature (for example, dress up as your favorite Dr. Seuss character and your favorite Harry Potter character). Drop off a new children s or young adult book (4th floor) to donate to Wolfson s Children s Hospital. Decorated office spaces will be judged today at 1 pm. Abess Park Elementary Oh the Places You'll Go Literacy can take you to some faraway places! Wear your favorite college shirt today! Door Decorating Contest They say don't judge a book by its cover but that's exactly what we will do! Classrooms will decorate their doors as book covers! Winners will be announced Friday! School-wide Book Exchange Need to freshen up your home library? All students will have the opportunity to receive a gently used book during our book exchange! Math Literacy Day! Moms Master Math will take place during the day. Don't forget to come join us for Math Night at 6:00pm! Vocabulary Word Dress Up Day! Dress up like a fun and interesting vocabulary word for the day. Simple as that. Some construction paper and string can get you from start to finish in no time!

2 Alden Road Theme is Fairy Tales and Superheroes * Volunteers come in to read theme based books to our students. * Door decorating begins (there is no winner, it is to create an atmosphere for Literacy). * Fairy tale and Superhero rocks are added to the rock garden around bus circle with words that represent superheroes and princesses. * Lunch table decorations are set up to encourage students to focus on reading. * The media center will be participating with a special "take a picture with a princess" booth. * There will be many visual representations of fairy tale characters and superhero's around campus. * There will be a "student works" bulletin board set up in multi-purpose room available to post student renditions of their favorite characters. * Morning announcements will suggest reading materials for the week on various technology based sites. * Door decorating continues. * Student works will be posted in the multi-purpose room. * Students are encouraged to wear superhero and fairy tale princess clothing. * Characters with a Cause will be present in the building. Interactive power points and fairy tales will be read out loud to classes during the course of the day by our AT Support and made available by on computers. 3 Annie R. Morgan Elementary Arlington Elementary Drop Everything and Read! Every student in every classroom (both ELA and math) will participate in Drop Everything and Read (DEAR). Students will have the opportunity to enjoy independently reading a book of their choice. Teachers should take this opportunity to catch up on a good book and model how enjoying reading can be. DEAR will start promptly at 8:45 am and end at 9:00 am. Don't forget to remind students to log their reading! Reading is so Cool- Wear your Shades Student Bookmarks! Every student will create their own personal bookmark. Blank bookmarks will be provided to you and placed in your box. Be as creative as you wish decorating your bookmarks. Teachers will designate the time that bookmarks will be decorated based on their daily schedule. Hats On for Reading: Wear your Favorite Hat Guest Readers Surprise guests will be visiting our school to speak with our students about the importance of literacy. The assembly will begin at 9:00 am. Grade levels will report to the auditorium when called over the intercom. Crazy about Reading: Wear Colorful Socks Reading Buddies 3rd through 5th grade students will read stories to the K-2 students. Intermediate teachers will be paired with primary teachers and a designated meeting place will be given. Teachers will determine how the students are paired and the books the students will read. A schedule will follow. Team Up and Read: Wear your team shirt Fractured Fairy Tales A fractured fairy tale is a traditional fairy tale that is humorously rewritten with unexpected characterization, plot developments, or using a different point of view. Students will watch a version of a fractured fairy tale online and then complete an activity based on the selected fracture fairy tale. Use this piece of literature to teach your focus standard based on your action plan, if applicable. Some activity suggestions are: discussing the elements of the fractured fairy tale, making connections between the traditional fairy tale and the fractured fairy tale, discussing characteristics, creating a story map, comparing / contrasting the traditional fairy tale and the fractured fairy tale, or writing your own fractured fairy tale. I have attached some printable fracture fairy tale activity ideas. These are just suggestions. Select an activity that suits your classroom, your instructional focus, and your schedule. Newspaper Day! Let's go Old School! Wear black and white to represent nonfiction printed text. Bring in a newspaper article to share with a partner in class. Book Swap in Cafeteria Student Lighthouse Team will facilitate the Book Swap. Teachers will sign up classes for scheduled times. Roxie the Reading Therapy Dog will also be reading and visiting classes! Buddy Read with Buddy Class K-2nd classes will pair with 3rd-5th classes for a Buddy Read. Take a Book to Lunch Picnic Parents are invited to bring a picnic lunch and join their child for an outdoor lunch. Students will bring a book to read to their parent during regularly scheduled lunch times. Please plan on meeting your child in their classroom 5 minutes prior to their scheduled lunch time. Beauclerc Elementary School Biltmore Elementary Beauclerc Read-A-Thon Day We at BES will pledge to lead, learn, and grow by kicking off Literacy Week with our very own "Read for 2019" Read-A- Thon. To reach our goal, each classroom is being asked to make a commitment to read for a total of 34 minutes equaling more than 2019 seconds. Administration shares a book. Guest Reader Don't Judge A Book By The Cover Activity Classes will choose a book to cover with brown paper. On the brown paper, classes will use words to describe their book. The challenge comes when other classes work to see if they can figure out the book title based on the descriptive words. Students wear book character hat and share their favorite book. Vocabulary Hat Day Students are challenged to create their own vocabulary hat based on some of their favorite vocabulary words from stories they have read or listened to this year. Poetry Sharing - Read aloud your favorite poem and share why it is your favorite Vocabulary Parade Students will select a vocabulary word to wear as their costume and parade through the halls. Real Men Read. Volunteers read aloud to every classroom. Vocabulary Games Let the robust vocabulary fun continue in the classroom as students line up in ABC order or play vocabulary games involving syllable counting, synonyms, and/or context clues. 5 Biscayne LITERACY WEEK KICK- OFF Literacy Week kick-off will be on the morning announcements. The kick off will be geared toward the purpose of upcoming activities for Literacy Week. The poster contest winners will also be announced. We may incorporate this idea as well...literary Trivia-Trivia questions relating to popular novels, short stories, poems, etc. are asked during morning and afternoon announcements. First correct answer wins a prize. STOP DROP AND READ DAY - Everyone must drop everything to devote their time, energy, and efforts to reading a book of their choice. DYNAMIC DUO PARTNER READ Classrooms will be paired together to read to each other. A schedule will be provided and the dynamic duos choose the time to meet up and read. REAL MEN READ Gentlemen from the community will read a pre-selected book to each classroom. LAUNCH into a Good Book Students will wear their school spirit shirt or uniforms to school and join Mrs. McBride and Mrs. Jackson at the "space station" (stage) for a story. LITERACY NIGHT. Parents and students are invited and encouraged to participate in "Literacy Night" 6 p.m. at Biscayne (Cafeteria).Come travel to different space stations with your Apollo 269 Space pass; where you can BLAST OFF with a good story, enjoy a make-andtake, play exciting literacy games, and enjoy a meal. CHARACTER DAY. Students are asked to dress up as their favorite book character. You need to bring the book of the character you are dressed up as. The students will participate in a character parade around the school to display their favorite book character.

7 Cedar Hills Elementary Crown Point Advertise a book: Students can work in groups to create an advertisement for a book using construction paper that will encourage others to read. When the advertisement is complete, have groups of students showcase (advertise) for the rest of the class. This may be done in two sessions... one to plan and one to showcase. This works especially well with students who have participated in guided reading lessons or literature circles, since the students have already read the same book. Teacher's Favorites- Teachers share a favorite childrens book with their class and display in room Young Authors Event: To celebrate reading, have each child choose and practice reading a published writing piece to read to their peers at the end of the day or during the morning time. Student's Favorites- Students bring a favorite book from home and read with a friend I love to Read Letters: To celebrate reading, have students write letters or a class letter to the principal and/or assistant principal about why they like to read. If time, students may also write a letter to the principal about their favorite book and/or author. Students can include illustrations or pictures within their letters. Teachers can drop letters off in an envelope near the principal's and assistant principal's mailbox at the end of the day. Book Recommendations- Students fill out slip to recommend favorite books to classmates in classroom library Read a Favorite Book Day: Students across the school will drop everything and read from 8:00-8:30am and their teachers or a guest reader will read a favorite book. Class Favorites- Classes buddy with a neighboring class and swap a favorite book for the day I Love to Read Posters Day: Ask students to bring a favorite book from home or select a favorite book within their classrooms. You may want to use a digital camera to take a close-up picture of the students reading that book. Post the pictures on a background that has a headline such as I Love to Read or WANTED: Caught Reading Great Books. The Scholastic Book Fair begins and students will tour the Book Fair while also learning of Literacy Week. Video promoting literacy will play. All English teachers will select a video clip (15-min max) from a novel studied this year and engage in a discussion comparing and contrasting the two mediums. Students and Faculty will have the opportunity to preregister for a run that will take place during last block to celebrate literacy. Leadership Team will visit the Performing Arts classes to see final products in honor of Literacy Week. *Performing Arts teachers will use novels to inspire weekly tasks. (i.e. a drawing inspired by a novel, a theatrical piece inspired by a novel, etc.) GRASP Academy *CAUGHT in the ACT: Throughout the week, students and faculty will have their picture taken and displayed if they are caught in the act of reading. 14 Loretto Louis Sheffield Elementary Monday: 100 years of reading: Students dress like 100. Grandparents are invited to share lunch with students, books will be provided at decorated tables for grandparents to read to students. A mystery guest reader will be featured on the news each morning for the students to guess. This reader will use a pirate voice to disguise themselves. Teachers may submit guesses to win a visit from mystery guest. Week Long Activities: -Name the Book: Guess the title and author of famous first lines read during the morning announcements. - Book in Hand: Students bring a new or slightly used book to school. The school will donate the books collected to a charitable institute such as a hospital or homeless shelter. -Create a school-wide reading wall: ELA classes will select a Caldecott winner picture book. Discuss how aspects of the text's illustrations contribute to what is conveyed by the words. After reading and discussing connections, the class will create a poster card that depicts the book cover and includes Tuesday: Jersey Day, wear your favorite team jersey. Literacy Feather Mural Students will decorate/write the title of their favorite poem/author on a feather that will be used to create a giant school wing mural. Southside Estates Each day there will be time designated at the beginning of the day for a read aloud. 22 Terry Parker High School KICK OFF for Literacy Week: SPREADING LITERACY ONE VIEW AT A TIME: Students will be told before Winter Break about the Florida department of Ed YouTube contest and be encouraged to create a YouTube submission that communicates how they share literacy or the importance of reading in their lives. Submissions will be judged by the number of YouTube views. In SCIENCE class, students will be able to view submissions that have already been made by Terry Parker classmates and will be encouraged to submit their own YouTube submission before the February 1st deadline. RANCHER FOR AN ANSWER: On Tuesday and Thursday, a literary question will be asked on the morning announcements. The Guidance Counselors will be in the cafeteria to give out Jolly Ranchers to those students who can answer the question of the day correctly. They will have some follow-up questions to ask so that students may win even more candy! CHARACTER DRESS UP DAY: Students will be encouraged to dress like their favorite character (within dress code). A group picture will be taken during 2nd block of all the students who participated which will be displayed at the University Park Library. LIFETIME of LITERACY: Emphasis will be put on connecting students with the Jacksonville Public Library. A librarian from the Jacksonville Public Library will be in the cafeteria to promote signing up for a public library card as well as to explain to students how to use their DCPS student IDs to check out books and use data bases at the public library or public library website. BOOK FESTIVAL DAY 1: Students from the Leadership Class (and any others who want to) will prepare trifolds of a favorite book to display in the library and do short book talks as elective classes walk through. Students will vote on the best display and a Barnes and Noble gift card will be given to the winner(s). YOU TUBE CONTEST: Students attending the Book Festival will also be able to view YOUTUBE contest submissions. RANCHER FOR AN ANSWER continues in the cafeteria.
