One significnce of this nnul Meet is combined effort on the prt o brodcsters nd rdio set mnufctrers to report to the listening public mom both of them serve. For those of us who live close to idio it is sometimes difficult to see te forest for the trees. But there is oe rdio mn who hs the fculty of ling rdio nd still telling its story t the people. Tht mn is John Fisher, dose Rdio Week tlk "Ldies nd (mtlemen, You Are Listening To DIRA, Pittsburgh" we re quoting Ire. The tlk is being delivered by ddio's Mr. Cnd on the "Cndin ' estinghouse Presents" progrm Oc - +:)er 1. "The old trpper in few words ex - i lined Ntionl Rdio Week. He sid thout this rdio I would be bushed 1 ing up here lone. "Rdio is the gretest medium of lss communiction ever devised. hdio mens new windows in homes. hdio puts holes in wlls, it brings new ))rids to the sick nd the lonely. It is friend of the curious. It is the twenfeth century clssroom. It puts Brod - 'y on the remote shores of Gret ve Lke. Rdio is mgic crpet '.th no respect for distnce or clss or eed or income. Brodcsting is the illdozer of the skies. It levels ll i'ople, rich nd poor, sick nd 'helthy, )nely nd busy-levels them ll to the ze of loudspeker. The blind mn to go to the thetre, the illiterte mn i.n meet Shkespere nd the 'business?'coon cn hobnob with the jive boys, e frmer cn her the politicin, the skimo in his frozen igloo cn her the 'ters spill over Nigr, the house - ife hs lost her domestic chins for :)w s she works she cn visit whole : w world of mgic. Into her kitchen 'me women who help her with sug-.estions bsed on expert study. The tesmen no longer count on the swy the mob. The humdrum horizons of wily routine re shttered by brodtsting. The printed word crries the cord of things ccomplished. The )oken word brethes the vitlity, the emedicy of history in the mking. dio is now, it is mnkind on the rch. "Brodcsting put the front line of bttle into the front room. Think of the millions of people who never went to bed without listening to the ltest reports from the field of wr. Think wht the speeches of Churchill, Roosevelt nd Mckenzie King ment to our spirits. For the first time in history the people hd box set. Think of the millions of women who hve forged new friendships by rdio. All dy 'long they listen. Think of the wether reports, the highwy bulletins, the mrket reports. Why Brodcsting hs moved the frmer right to the mrket door. Brodcsting hs shrunk the whole world - Brodcsting hs squeezed Cnd into n intimte friendly thing. It hs robbed distnce of its sting. It hs picked up Victorind St. John's nd thrown them on mgic crpets which hover like Cnd geese bove, coming down only when clled. Ottw is no longer distnt city on the bnks of the Gtineu, Rideu nd Ottw. It now hs wings. It is ll over the plce. "The drem of the Fthers of Confedertion hs rolled, rocketed, ricocheted nd multiplied million times. Brodcsting is pir of gint knitting needles. It hs picked up the strnds nd weved them into the Cndin pttern. It hs plced Mple Lef Grdens on every street in Moose Jw. The Blckout glimmer of 'Old Blighty' nd `Floosey Flre' of Old Brodwy hve lit the home of Ecum Secum, Nov Scoti. The rilrod workers on strike touched dils to lern they were ordered to throw switches. The rhythmic pound of hooves t Clgry, hs been herd in prts of Cnd where horses hve never been seen. "Brodcsting! How pproprite tht this spce gobbler which hs spred 'round the world in thirty yers should be nmed fter one of mn's oldest rts-the spreding of seed. To Brodcst is to sow. Rdio sows seeds of stimultion, eduction, edifiction nd relxtion. It grows seeds which choke the weeds of isoltion. It hcks t horizons nd mirrors mnkind. Like it or lothe 'it, dmit one thing on this, the eve of Ntionl Rdio Week. Admit how fst we hve trvelled since tht dy thirty yers go, since tht dy, November 2, 1920, when n unknown voice sid `LADIES AND GENTLE- MEN, YOU ARE LISTENING TO KDKA, PITTSBURGH'." Only those who re old enough to hve cler recollection of World Wr I cn fully pprecite how tremendously rdio science nd industry hve influenced the lives of everyone. In those dys dvnce informtion on outstnding events ws obtined from newspper bulletin bords nd mny will recll the lrge crowds tht stood, sometimes in the rin, outside newspper offices when some mjor conflict ws in progress. With only the written word s guide, pronuncition of foreign plce nmes ws both vried nd grotesque. Written ccounts of ddresses by importnt persons, lcking the inflection nd emphsis of t'he originl nd the personlity of the speker, did not lwys succeed in conveying the desired messge. In contrst to this, we hve tody rdio system which, supplementing rther thn supplnting the newspper, elimintes ll these deficiencies. Not only is importnt news conveyed lmost instntly to millions of listeners in the comfort of their homes or while driving on the highwy, but mny of these brodcsts come from the ctul scene of the event so tht for ll prcticl purposes the listener is there. Furthermore, there is no longer ny confusion s to the pronuncition of foreign nmes which ssists in the freer discussion of events mong the people themselves. Another chnge tht hs been brought bout since the dvent of rdio brodcsting nd which will 'be quite evident to the observnt who hve lived through this er, is tht of musicl pprecition. There cn be no doubt whtever but tht rdio hs brought fine music to those who, in the old dys, would never hve herd n oper or symphony concert. In this respect there is world of difference between the public of 1950 nd tht of If to this we dd the brodcst wrnings of impending dissters, the service contributed by rdio to isolted communities in the cse of flood or fire nd the ssistnce tht hs been given the police in fighting crime, it becomes self-evident tht the rdio industry hs provided fine public service nd hs been ' mjor fctor in the development of civilized living in the lst 30 yers.

Originlity nd imgintion hve been sdly lcking nd insted of being ble to review n encourging prde of noteworthy progrm trends, 'I cn only comment tht we hve hd dull seson, from listener's point of view. This my explin the increse in the sle of phonogrph records, nd the prevlence, in our town t lest, of money give-wy progrms. The sttions hve not hd the worth -while fetures with which to lure listeners, so they hve tried buying them with the give-wys. One locl sttion even bosts tht, "You don't hve to be listening to the rdio; just nswer the question when the phone rings, nd the jckpot is yours." The Cndin rdio wrds of 1949 further reflect the stgntion which hs overcome rdio. Wyne nd Shuster took the top vriety wrd for the second yer, nd the progrm ws declred "first-clss entertinment." Now, I gree, Wyne nd Shuster hve been entertining good prt of this pst seson. But the over-ll formul of their show hsn't chnged one hit from the time they mde their debut in commercil rdio few yers bck. Why couldn't Wyne nd Shuster, nd the Americn comedins too, for tht mtter, try switch? There ws time when I hted to miss the Cndin comedins, Fibber McGee nd even Bob Hope. In recent months I hven't hd the slightest worry bout not hering Hope, nd if it hs been choice between the other comedins nd movie, I hven't been especilly concerned bout them either. I knew I wouldn't be missing much, becuse their routines would be unchnged, nd their jokes merely more timely versions of the old stnd-bys. Also, I noticed the rdio wrds gve first nod for drm to Montrel production of The Tril. Unfortuntely, I didn't her this, but I do hope it ws bove the Wyne nd Shuster stndrd of merit. There hve been few highly interesting drms on the ir this seson, but for the most prt, drm hs been s short on originlity nd imgintion s hve rdio's other deprtments. The CBC's Stge Series, which once ws t the top of my list for its refreshing pproch to rdio drm, this seson ws only slightly hed of those Mondy night sop stories in imgintion nd cretiveness. The dring nd experimenting which once chrcterized the Stge progrms, now unfortuntely hve been forgotten by Producer Andrew Allen. TALENT TRAIL By Tom Briggs The Voice of the Army, new series of hlf hours, which strted lst week over Dominion network, gve Army Week nice loud, brssy lunching but my hve fllen short t times in its ppel to men of recruitble ge, such, for instnce, s myself, God help me! The show, which is ired from the stge of the Odeon -Toronto Thetre, fetured the competent Cndin Army Bnd under the vigorously wved 'bton of Howrd Cble, the better -seen-thn-herd songstress Frosi Gregory, the guitr -strumming western blldier Ed McCurdy, The Four Soldiers qurtet, nd Royl Cndin Drgoon Trooper Frnk Stnley s the Army's voice. Production ws by Jckie Re for Ronld's Advertising, When the purpose of the show is considered, tht is, to ttrct young men into the rmy generlly nd the Armored Corps in prticulr, the best performnces were done by Miss Gregory nd Tpr. Stnley. With her chrming song, Wonderful Guy, Frosi gve the progrm sprk of universl ppel, while Stnley opened up with voice tht peculirly represented the rmy. Like the rmy, his voice is powerful, well suited to the job, but when under fire on stge thetre, like wr thetre, he took while to settle down, mde his musing mistkes, nd finlly emerged victorious over difficult though competent script. Stnley, s mtter of fct, unwittingly (or ws it) provided the only bit of humor, which this sh-w lcks in gret quntity, when he referred to the western rmored regiment, the Lord Strthcon Horse, s the Lord Strthcon Herse. Cble's bnd plyed techniclly well nd cme to life in spots. But the progrm could do more to ttrct young fellows besides medleys of rmy mrches, nd Ed McCurdy singing the Big Rock Cndy Mountin, even when well done, s they were here. I lso think the commercils would "sell" more fellows on rmy life, if they were tped on the rmored firing nd driving rnges nd in the wireless schools t Petww. A word picture of wht recruit cn expect sounds little too hmmy, but short on -the-scene interview, complete with genuine sound effects, would, I feel, mke pretty convincing story. i The Commodores Qurtet, lis the Four Soldiers, seem to be in populr demnd with weekly hlf-hour to themselves over CFRB, Toronto, nother on the Trns -Cnd network, nd s prt of the Army's new show. And this is s it should be, I feel, for the four boys, Don Prrish, Jck Ringhm, Hrvrd Reddick nd leder Crl Tpscott, mke very plesing combintion when ttcking melodies, both young nd old, with refreshing bndon 'nd orig- inlity. However, they hve shown good judgment by plcing the ccent On old fmilir songs nd se chnteys. It seems, s.the story goes, tht it ws by pure ccident nd only s lst resort, tht the recording compny bcked the newest relese of "Tsen, Tsen, Tsen" with the old song "Goodnight, Irene," One look t the hit prde, though, revels tht the oldie hs fr outstripped its plttermte in populrity. And tht is pprently the Commodores' view. Too, there is in this group plesing hrmony of 'both tones nd personlities. None of them is the str, yet ech singer, when solo occurs, is perfectly ble to stnd on his own two tonsils. An pproprite musicl introduction nd sign -off is sung by the qurtet on its two mjor shows, which dd high-grde lustre to the production. If this could be crried throughout, cutting the cute nnouncing to minimum, it would be n improvement. Kudos should lso go to the qurtet's keybord ccompnists Edgr Goodire nd Don Gordon nd guitrist Bill Richrds, who combine to provide subtle bckground for the vocl work, nd spring into the solo limelight when things threten to stgnte. Ws I thoroughly shmed of myself, for the second short brought forth picture of the mighty rms nd hnds nd when the fce cme in view, who ws it but Dr. Leslie Bell? Needless to sy the bckground music ws the Bell Singers nd these girls truly re mighty ggregtion. At the beginning of number these girls tke their down bet from Dr. Bell, they sing mightily nd with liberl sprinkling of rt. When the whole thing is over Dr. Bell my compliment them with, "Well, it wsn't good but it ws loud." Tht's wht I cll being goded on to better things. o Never let it be sid I went out on lintb nd prophesied big things bout Dnforth Rdio Hour on CFRB Thursdy nights. But I clss it mong the shows I wnt to her nd the Kenny sisters ren't the lest reson. If these girls don't mke the big-time, I'm surprised. In pssing I must py tribute to the outstnding selling job done by nnouncer Eddie Luther. Another singing tem tht should go fr is the O'Lery girls herd on Hyloft Hoedown on CKEY. Producer Ed Houston hs developed something very listen - ble here. Still nother good reson for bosting on our feminine prt is Kte Aitken. She does hve bumper brodcsts for Tmblyns on CFRB ided nd betted bly by Cy Strnge. Doing these shows from the CNE ws not simple chore but Kte Aitken cme through with flying colors. Girls seem to hve entered prcticlly every phse of rdio there is nd to be mking success of it. Among the producers on the distff side comes to mind the nme of Ky Stevenson who is responsible for mny successes. More thn once I've seen Mry Muir throwing the switches on Hppy Gng show nd ech time the show hs been on the nose for the network. Then there ws nnouncer Lddie Dennis whose work lwys rted high.
