Frequently Asked Questins: Q. What is the general frmat f the MAMA festival? A. All events are held at Adam s Mark Htel. When making rm reservatins, mentin MAMA t get the special festival rate r use the link that will ensure that rate fr yu. 1) Entrants can participate in multiple categries (see details and available days n pages 3 thrugh 8.) 2) Awards ceremnies are n Friday evening fr Thursday and Friday participants and n Sunday afternn fr Saturday and Sunday mrning participants. Names f thse receiving Superir scres are psted Thursday evening and Friday preceding the Awards, Saturday evening and Sunday preceding the Awards. 3) At the Awards Ceremny, Superir recipients are called t the stage t receive their trphy. Q. Fr perfrmance accmpaniment, may I use cmputer-generated music r a CD accmpaniment? A. Live accmpaniment is required. Q. May I use phtcpied music fr any festival perfrmance r judging? A. Phtcpied music is nly allwed with a permanently-ut-f-print letter frm publisher. See page 4. Q. May we phtgraph r vide my adjudicatin? A. N phtgraphy r vide recrding equipment is allwed in any rm during judging. Q. What happens if I cannt be present at the Friday night r Sunday afternn Awards Ceremny t pick up my trphy, if I receive a Superir rating? A. A studi representative (with an authrizatin letter, which will be prvided t the Assciate Member in June) must pick up trphies after the Sunday ceremny. Unclaimed trphies are available nly at the awards ceremnies; if nt claimed at either f the Awards Ceremnies, trphies will be frfeited and will nt be mailed by M.A.M.A. Q. There is n set number f superir ratings. The nly cmpetitins in the MAMA festival are Pian Cmpetitive (see page 6) and a cmpetitin fr Tp Virtus, the mst advanced classificatin. Q. What if there is nt a required list f music fr regular sl entry n my instrument (vila, cell, etc)? A. If yur instrument is nt listed in the required lists, yu will chse tw cntrasting pieces fr yur regular sl entry. Q. Hw d I knw what classificatin t enter? A. Fr sl divisins that have a required list, chse class based n repertire. Fr thse instruments with n required list and fr duets & ensembles, the fllwing are general guidelines: Classes G,F,E= early t mid-elementary; Classes D, C, B=late elementary t early intermediate; Classes A, AA, AAA=mid t late intermediate; Junir Virtus t Virtus = advanced. Registratins are dne thrugh MAMA Assciate Members (teachers). Insufficient fund check charge: $ Pstmark deadline fr entries: May 24, 2019 t avid the $10.00 per entry late fee fr pstmarks after this date. N pre-recrded tapes, tracks, etc., allwed. Brass, Wdwind, Vila, Vilin, Cell Class G thrugh B: accmpaniment nt mandatry but is encuraged if full accmpaniment is written fr the piece. N pints deducted if nt used. Class A thrugh Virtus: accmpaniment is required when written in the piece. Vice all classes: Accmpaniment is required at all levels. Accmpanist may be the teacher f cntestant; M.A.M.A. will assist in lcating an accmpanist, but cntestants are encuraged t bring their wn; any cntestant wh wishes t use the M.A.M.A. accmpanist will pay a $50.00 fee per event, which cvers 20 minutes rehearsal time n preceding evening and the auditin time. Deadline fr submitting accmpanist request, cpy f music and nn-refundable accmpanist fee (payable t M.A.M.A.) is July 7, If cntacted after the deadline the charge will be $75. CHOOSING A CLASS: A cntestant cannt enter tw classes n the same instrument: example, d nt enter Class D and als Class C n the same instrument. Cntestants entering tw r mre sl divisins must play different selectins each divisin. Fr example: regular pian sl entry cannt be same repertire as hymn/patritic r pian cmpetitive. This applies t all instruments. **A cntestant s chice piece may nt appear n lwer level f the test list than the required piece. CUTS IN MUSIC may nt be made by the perfrmer. Cntestants must perfrm as published, (see Reminder, page 1 n repeats) 3

PHOTOCOPIED MUSIC: Abslutely n phtcpied music will be allwed in judging rms unless a letter frm the publisher stating permanently ut f print has been submitted befre the festival t the M.A.M.A. secretary; therwise, bth the cntestant (in categries which allw music t be used) and judge (in every instance) must have riginal scres; students using phtcpied music that is nt P.O.P. will be disqualified frm the festival. This applies t any slist, accmpanist r duet/ensemble participant. TEACHERS are permitted t be cntestants in nly AA, AAA, Jr. Virtus, Virtus and Open Divisin. OUTSTANDING YOUNG PERFORMERS: *Will be selected by the judges frm all entrants except sl pian and Virtus, any instrument. (1 st place Cmpetitive Pian winners will be cnsidered Outstanding Yung Perfrmers fr Sl Pian) *Criteria: exceptinal musicianship, perfrmance, pise, etc. *The Outstanding Yung Perfrmers list will be psted Saturday evening as an invitatin t play n the OYP recital preceding the Sunday awards ceremny. *Due t time cnstraints, Sunday mrning cntestants will nt be eligible fr O.Y.P. AUDITION PROCEDURES: If cntestant is scheduled fr tw r mre perfrmances at abut the same time, t g rchestra first, ensemble secnd, duet third, sl furth. PRIOR TO PLAYING, cntestants are encuraged t annunce their name and the names f the pieces they are perfrming in all divisins having audiences. ORIGINAL MUSIC: All cntestants are required t bring the riginal f bth test piece and chice piece music t present t the judge; three pint penalty fr failure t prvide scre. (see abve fr full explanatin regarding phtcpied music) MEMORIZATION: Required in Sl divisin, (except rgan AAA, rgan Junir Virtus and rgan Virtus), and sme ther categries. Check next sectin fr memrizatin in specific categries. RATINGS ANNOUNCEMENT: Superirs will be psted near the Infrmatin Desk as sn as pssible after judging is cmplete each day. Friday and Sunday Superirs will be psted as sn as available prir t the Awards Ceremny. AWARD CRITERIA: Trphies will be awarded t scres f exactly 95 pints r abve. Trphies will be presented first t nly the cntestants wh are present at the awards ceremny. AWARDS CEREMONIES: fr Thurs/ Friday judging-friday evening; fr Saturday & Sunday judging Sunday aft. TROPHY PICK-UP: An authrized studi representative must pick up trphies fr absentee cntestants after the Friday awards and/r after the Sunday awards. Cntestants wuld need t bring their wn keybard, extensin crd and amplifier if needed. OPEN SOLO DIVISION: Fr any cntestant wh is a previus virtus winner. Music shuld be f suitable cncert material, ne hur duratin. Cmplete prgram must be sent t Secretary fr review by the Bard ne mnth prir t the festival (i.e. list pieces and cmpsers). Cntestant cannt play in bth virtus and pen divisin in the same year. Open divisin may be repeated in successive years using different repertire. The judge will hear part r all f each wrk; auditin will be apprximately 20 minutes in ttal. POP/BLUES/JAZZ r HYMN/PATRIOTIC (any instrument) * Pian Pp/Blues/Jazz will be scheduled any f the festival days. *Each piece must be a minimum f 16 bars, nt including repeats. *Cntestants nt required t enter any ther event. *Repertire: n required list; hwever, if entering regular sl, chse same level f difficulty; Chse 2 hymns, 2 patritic r 1 f each; fr pp/blues/jazz: any 2 f TV r mvie themes, blues r jazz. *Memrizatin nt required; Bring Original Scre fr the judge and riginal scre fr the cntestant. 5

ORCHESTRA DIVISION: (9 r mre players): Percussin may be added. Amplificatin may be used. N age limit fr members; amateur r prfessinal members; A cntestant can be invlved in n mre than tw rchestras, regardless f the number f instruments played. Memry nt required. (Bring Original Scre fr the judge and riginal scre fr the cntestants.) Cmplete written scres must be prvided fr the judge. All played ntes must be shwn n the scre. Memrizatin ptinal; audience allwed. May be any style and pen t all sl divisins in the festival. Adjudicatin will be n the cmpsitin itself rather than the perfrmance. PERCUSSION *Marimba: nt furnished; bring yur wn instrument; indicate n entry frm if yu need pian accmpaniment. *Class D thrugh Virtus drum: Play ne set drum sl and ne snare drum sl (ne required, ne chice). If yu play a required list set sl, yu may chse a snare sl that des nt have t be frm the list; if yu play a required snare sl, yu may chse a set sl that des nt have t be frm the list. *Drum sls Class A and belw will use drum set prvided at festival t alleviate crwded space and time factr. Participants in classes G thrugh A will nt be allwed t bring duplicatin instruments f their wn. * A layut f the prvided drum set will be available upn request. If smething needed is nt prvided, the teacher is t cntact the M.A.M.A. secretary by July 7 th. Drum set furnished will be: Standard set with 2 crashes, 1 ride cymbal, hi-hat and drummer s thrne. PIANO COMPETITIVE (scheduled Friday nly): *Cntestants must enter the regular M.A.M.A. festival sl divisin as well as cmpetitive with a different cmpetitive piece but frm the same level as regular sl (required r chice pieces). Chse Cmpetitive selectin frm the Test-List-Same-Level as sl divisin. Memrizatin is required. *Cmpetitive Pian cntestants age limit cannt be mre than age 18 n August 1, *Class G thrugh Junir Virtus may enter. Only ne (1) selectin will be perfrmed. *1 st, 2 nd & 3 rd places may be awarded in each divisin. 1 st Place must be 95% r higher; 2 nd & 3 rd place must receive a scre f at least 90%. N secnd r third place awarded if n first place winner. *There will be n ties. 1 st, 2 nd and 3 rd place winners must mve t the next higher sl class the fllwing year. *Cmpetitive grups will have 20 r less participants. In Class G thrugh Class B, each grup will be playing in the same sl class. Larger grups will be divided by age within same sl class. (Fr example, class D and E will nt be judged against each ther; if Class D cmpetitive has mre than 20 participants, a class D-1 and a class D-2, will be scheduled, determined by age). Class A thrugh Junir Virtus may be smewhat gruped tgether, depending n number f entries. *The cmpetitive piece can be changed n later than 10 days befre the festival. A change fee f $10.00 will apply. *Audience permitted in all classes. *Cmpetitive winners recital- Friday, 6:00 p.m. 1 st 2 nd and 3 rd Place winners may be perfrming, depending n available time. *1 st place winners may be invited t play n the Sunday Recital preceding the awards ceremny, depending n available time. 6

All sl instrument categries (with exceptins listed abve) will have test piece lists. *Required lists cntain multiple chices because music cntinually ges ut f print. Please ntify the MAMA secretary (gabelpam@gmail.cm) if yu knw f pieces that are permanently ut f print. * A cntestant s chice piece may nt appear n lwer level f the test list than the required piece. TALENT SHOW * Will be scheduled Saturday, 6:30 p.m. Check in fr all entrants is 12:00 p.m. n Saturday at registratin desk. * Tw Divisins: Junir age 12 & under; Senir - age 13 & ver thrugh high schl. Entrants wh graduated high schl in spring preceding the summer festival are eligible cllege age students are nt eligible. * Cntestant must als be entered in anther festival event (sl, duet, r quiz bwl, etc) * Talent Shw cntestants must use ne-track CD-R if using any electrnic accmpaniment. Bring labeled CD-R with yu at time f check-in fr the talent shw and leave at registratin desk. *Can participate in nly ne talent shw event; cannt use same number as in anther judging event. *Cstumes with discretin are encuraged with an age-apprpriate dress cde fr a family-style shw. *Inapprpriate dress will result in cntestant disqualificatin. *Time limit: 5 minutes; can nly d ne number. * Entries can be slists r acts; des nt have t be yur principal instrument. N lip sync. * Order f perfrmances will be psted at apprximately 4:00pm. THEATER VOICE: *memrizatin required; audience allwed *chse 2 numbers quality selectins frm films r ther music theater pieces (sngs frm Disney films are especially apprpriate fr yunger vices. Please d nt select sngs frm cuntry r heavy rck styles.) *7 minutes including set up is alltted fr each cntestant; judge may cut perfrmance ging ver time. THEORY BEE: Friday nly; see guidelines and syllabus. UNFRETTED STRING DIVISION: Entrants will chse tw cntrasting pieces if n test list is nt available. VIRTUOSO: All Virtuss will be judged n Saturday. A tp virtus winner will be chsen where, in the judges pinins, the entrant is tp caliber. Tp winners will play n the Sunday Hnrs Recital. There will be n tie fr tp virtus in any divisin. Virtus entrants must play pieces as written (see special ntes abve fr repeats lnger than 8 measures) and will play tw memrized pieces ne frm the test list and ne f their chice. Virtus entries are t send a resume cncerning their musical study, attached t the entry frm. A tp virtus winner is nt eligible t be the tp winner tw cnsecutive years n the same instrument. * One Tp Virtus may be chsen frm each f the fllwing categries: pian, percussin, all fretted string, all unfretted string, all brass, all wdwind, all accrdin, harp, and vice. MUSIC QUIZ BOWL: *Cre questins used ver the past 10 years are available t all studis frm the Secretary upn request. Preliminary runds start Friday afternn. Number f teams determines Friday scheduling. Teams cnsist f 3-4 members; n limit n number f teams frm a studi. N age limit; classificatin will be accrding t the highest sl divisin n the team. Team members must participate in sl divisin. Classificatin: An entrant can be n nly ne team; A Class D entrant can participate n either an E-F-G team r a B-C-D team. An E-F-G team can have nly ne Class D participant. Classificatins will be: Level 1 EFG sl participants (with ne class D entrant permitted per team) Level II BCD sl participants Level III A Virtus sl participants Questins will include histry, thery, aural and musicianship apprpriate fr each level. Written preliminary test will be Friday 2:00 t 3:00 p.m., if the number f teams entered necessitates an eliminatin rund test. Three highest individual scres n each team will be used in determining the semi-final teams. Semi-final runds are Friday with up t fur teams fr each level. Finals cmpetitin is Saturday fr Level I, II, and III. Each rund will cnsist f a set number f questins; 10 secnds is given t answer, if missed, the ther team has the ptin t accept that questin r ask fr a new ne. If accepted: n repeat f the questin and 5 secnds t answer.
