1 Grove City Community Library 125 W Main St Grove City, PA Phone June 2018 Newsletter June 2018 Volume 12, Issue 6 DIRECTOR S CUT Library Hours Monday and Friday 10:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m. Dear Friends, Over the holiday weekend we took a little road trip. Child number five decided he wanted to play the question game. This game requires TONS of imagination and quick thinking to come up with questions that will insure a lengthy conversation. For example: Which of the Seven Wonders of the World would you like to see? Ummm.Silence and then from the way, way back seat child number four chimes in with, What are the Seven Wonders of the World? So we asked Google, and from the time that I was a kid until now, the Seven Wonders have changed. Who does that? Apparently, in 2007 over 100 million people decided to get together and vote on the NEW Seven Wonders of the World. Here is the list: Great Wall of China, (China), J 951 FRIE, J , Christ the Redeemer Statue, (Rio de Janeiro), Machu Picchu, (Peru), J 985 K, Chichen Itza, (Ycatan Peninsula, Mexico), The Roman Colosseum, (Rome), J 722 l, , Taj Mahal, (Agra, India), J TAGL and Petra, (Jordan), B HUSS, JB RANI. So child number five decided on The Roman Colosseum, child number four said The Great Wall of China, and child number six said he didn t care as long as we could eat. My hubby picked Rio de Janeiro as long as we went during carnival. During our game I asked my hubby, What would be the best gift for Father s Day (Sunday June 17)? He said, A happy and healthy family. I would like to wish ALL of the Dads, Step Dads, Stand in Dads, Grandfathers, Uncles and Single Moms out there a Happy Father s Day! 2 As of May 27, 2018 the Grove City Community Library has installed a security system. They are not as rare as you think. In fact, the library sees them on a daily basis. They are dedicated fathers, guys with busy schedules and important jobs. They show up with kids in tow, sit on floors crossed-legged with kids cuddled in their laps as they read to them. These are our young fathers who gather board books and easy readers. We also see fathers with teens choosing books on mechanics and hotrods. And last but not least, fathers who are empty-nesters looking for books on the best way to connect with their grandchildren. As librarians and parents, we relish in knowing that they are carrying on traditions that last a lifetime. The love of books and the feel and smell of hardcover or paperbacks and the wonder that lies in the pages they turn. We want to thank each and every one of the fathers for taking the time to visit and bring their families to our library. For the young fathers, especially with many children, we know that it can be quite a journey. Keep it coming, dads! A super special thank-you to the fathers that volunteer to come in and teach the kids special programs. Happy Fathers Day! 4 Mystery Lovers Book Club 3rd Wednesday of each month at 2:30 p.m. This month s book is Into the Water by Paula Hawkins Our next meeting is June 2oth If you would like a copy of this book, please ask at the front desk A single mother turns up dead at the bottom of the river that runs through town. Earlier in the summer, a vulnerable teenage girl met the same fate. They are not the first women lost to these dark waters, but their deaths disturb the river and its history, dredging up secrets long submerged. Left behind is a lonely fifteen-year-old girl. Parentless and friendless, she now finds herself in the care of her mother s sister, a fearful stranger who has been dragged back to the place she deliberately ran from a place to which she vowed she d never return. With the same propulsive writing and acute understanding of human instincts that captivated millions of readers around the world in her explosive debut thriller, The Girl on the Train, Paula Hawkins delivers an urgent, twisting, deeply satisfying read that hinges on the deceptiveness of emotion and memory, as well as the devastating ways that the past can reach a long arm into the present. Beware a calm surface you never know what lies beneath. Intro to Tech Drop-In Hour Wednesdays from 1:00 2:00 p.m. One-on-one assistance is offered for those interested in becoming more confident using computers, navigating the Internet, or just figuring out how to use your own e-reader or smart phone.
