Yu have been given the pprtunity t becme part f a wnderful and rich traditin f rchestra students and ensembles here as a Center Grve Trjan. It seems change is the new cnstant, especially in educatin, and it s nly ging t accelerate. We are grwing and changing as well. One f the changes includes sme changes in mindsets, r hw we view the class. I am cmmitted t develping a relatinal mindset this year. We are all cnnected in this life tgether. In fact, there are six degrees f separatin between any persn we meet (yes, even Kevin Bacn). The gal will be fr all f us t cnnect with each ther first as a persn and then as a parent, student r teacher secnd. My gal is t persnalize the learning fr each student in class, cnnect everyne fr success and shw empathy fr each ther. I care abut my students - their hme life as well as their classrm successes, and I believe it s imprtant t put students first and everything else secnd. If yu have any cncerns ver the curse f the year, please dn t hesitate t reach ut thrugh and/r phne. Our greatest pwer is the pwer f chice. We have a great deal f influence ver hw we run ur brains. Remember this every day: I have a chice. I m glad yu made the chice t be in rchestra! Musically speaking, R Jseph Shimp - Music Educatr, Center Grve Nrth x shimpj@centergrve.k12.in.us

2 Orchestra Music Curriculum Students develp techniques fr playing string instruments as a means t studying and perfrming a variety f string literature styles. Materials Needed It is expected that students wh are enrlled in rchestra will have the fllwing materials with them every class perid that they have rchestra. Please check the list and make sure students have the necessary materials at yur earliest pssible cnvenience. Students wh d nt have materials will limit their ptential fr grwth n their instrument. Bring the fllwing materials t class EACH DAY: 1. A PENCIL! 2. ipad: There is a metrnme, tuner and SmartMusic n the ipad which will be used daily. Cursewrk will be lcated n Canvas - ur Learning Management System. Mst hmewrk will be submitted thrugh the ipad. Bring earbuds every day, in case we use them fr listening. *It is HIGHLY recmmended t have yur wn SmartMusic subscriptin at hme! 3. Music and methd bk SIXTH GRADE ESSENTIAL ELEMENTS FOR STRINGS BOOK 1 SEVENTH GRADE ESSENTIAL ELEMENTS FOR STRINGS BOOK 2 EIGHTH GRADE ESSENTIAL TECHNIQUE FOR STRINGS BOOK 3 4. Instrument in wrking cnditin (and crrectly sized fr the string student) Cells & Basses - bring bw (in bw case) nly. Leave instrument at hme. Strings n string instruments must be changed every 6 mnths t a year. Bw (strings nly) bw hair must be changed every 6 mnths t a year. Rsin (strings nly) Shulder pad (vilins and vilas nly) Sft cleaning clth (strings nly) Mandatry equipment purchases due August 8! Frm time t time during the schl year, yu will receive a materials check. The easiest way t avid a respnsibility lg entry is t have everything yu need at all times.

4 Other equipment needed thrughut the year: Music stand (fr hme practice) Orchestra T-Shirt ($12 strings nly - needed fr Spring String Fling in May) Cncert Dress White bluse r dress shirt (Bluses must cver the shulders and must nt expse the midriff.) General Infrmatin Use f the Music Facility Orchestra Rm The use f the music facilities befre, after, and during schl is a privilege. Only students in the rchestra prgram are permitted in the rchestra rm, except fr business with the directr. Please refrain frm hrseplay, e.g., thrwing things in r arund the rchestra rm. String students may nly use their persnal instrument r an instrument assigned t them fr use during schl. Please keep yur persnal items in yur schl lcker. Fd, gum and drink (ther than water) are nt allwed in the rchestra rm. Practice Rms Keep the rm neat with the apprpriate music stands and chairs in place. Phne All students shuld keep in mind that this is a place f business. Ask fr permissin befre using the phne.

5 Cl Expectatins fr Orchestra 1. BE NICE: a. ATTENTION SIGNAL. Clap-bm-clap. Mr Shimp claps nce and all students repeat. Every time Mr Shimp duble claps, all students say Bm! This tells me yu re ready! b. Students may nly use their persnal instrument r an instrument assigned t them fr use during schl. 2. WORK HARD: a. ENTERING THE CLASSROOM. We enter the classrm in a calm, quiet manner. Pick up yur instrument and take a seat and grab a stand. b. GETTING INSTRUMENT READY. Vilins and vilas: place yur instrument case flat n the flr r a table with the latches facing yu. Open the case and take the instrument ut by the neck. Cells and basses: pick yur instrument up by the neck and ribs and carry it t yur seat befre adjusting the end pin. c. STORING CASES. Yu may place yur case n yur seat behind yu r back in yur strage area. d. MAKEUP WORK. When yu are absent yu are expected t make up any wrk yu missed. On the day yu return, check Canvas n yur ipad fr any new assignments. Ask yur sectin leader befre asking yur directr fr clarificatin. 3. MAKE NO EXCUSES: a. TARDINESS. Yu are expected t be in the rm when the bell rings. Remember: Yu must be in yur seat and wrking ne minute after the bell r yu will be cunted tardy. (That means having the necessary materials ut n yur stand.) b. SET UP YOUR MUSIC STAND. Yur music stand is yur wrkstatin fr the class perid. Have yur pencil, ipad tuner, music and methd bk ut n the stand ready t g n later than ne minute after the bell. c. HOMEWORK. Hmewrk, when nline, will be due befre midnight n the day it is due. Put it in the turn in bin at the beginning f class if it s a paper cpy. 4. CHOOSE WELL: a. END OF CLASS DISMISSAL. All instruments must be put away in their cases and strage areas at the end f each rehearsal. b. AGENDA PASSES. Yu are expected t use the restrm between classes. Classrm time is valuable learning time. In rder t prtect this limited amunt f time, yu must use agenda passes. Use them wisely. Each time yu wish t use an agenda pass, write the date and yur destinatin n the apprpriate line and get yur teacher initial and recrd yur time ut and in.

6 Attendance I will make the determinatin when the event happens utside regular schl hurs, but will fllw the same guidelines as the Attendance Office in determining excused r unexcused absences. Fr all absences, the student and parent must fllw the fllwing prcedure: Althugh cleared by the schl ffice, absences frm a music activity that same day must be cleared with me as well please call the music rm. Fllw-up is the sle respnsibility f the student. Failure t ntify me in the manner listed abve culd result in a lwer grade. The mere filing f an absentee request frm des nt cnstitute apprval. Cnflicts with Music Class Events Reslving cnflicts between music and ther activities r events is the respnsibility f the student. Rehearsal and perfrmance schedules are given ut in advance s that arrangements can be made. Students shuld nt becme invlved with activities that may directly cnflict with music activities. When utside activities create hardships cncerning music, unless it is a situatin that shuld nly happen nce, the student will need t cnsult with me abut pssible alternatives. Students shuld have a calendar and be aware f all music dates well ahead f schedule. It is my plicy t assist students when cnflicts ccur within the scpe f the music department plicy. Students are reminded that music is a very demanding activity and that invlvement in utside activities shuld be limited t thse cmpatible with the music schedule. All cnflicts with perfrmances must be reslved in favr f music participatin. Cncerts and Other Perfrmances Each perfrming grup will have three after schl required cncerts each year. These cncerts are mstly held in the MSN gymnasium r HS Auditrium and ccur utside the schl day. As yu are in a perfrmance music class, attendance at all cncerts is mandatry and fr a grade. Evening Practices There will be ensemble practices thrughut the year, as nted in the master schedule. Please mark yur calendar with the crrect date and times. Students wh miss mre than 1/3 the ttal number f extra rehearsals will be disqualified fr perfrmance. PRIVATE LESSONS Private lessns are nt required but HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. While I try t maintain a reasnable class size with a maximum f 25 students, the individual and specialized training that a student receives during private instructin allws a student t imprve perfrmance skills by leaps and

7 bunds. T make private lessns mre accessible t students, several district-apprved instructrs will be allwed t teach private lessns during all rchestra classes and all lunches. I will als maintain a list f recmmended private instructrs and assist students in selecting a teacher. Scheduling and payment arrangements must be made by students directly with the private instructr. Grading Multiple and Varied Assessment Opprtunities (including Retakes) The letter grade that students earn will be based upn their level f success reaching the curricular standards set by the music curriculum apprved by the Center Grve Cmmunity Schl District. The level f success will be determined thrugh: 1) perfrmance assessments in and utside f class (nt including cncerts); 2) skill assessments in rehearsal settings; and 3) written assessments in and utside f class. The teacher will be assessing the fllwing skills: Individual Skills Bw Usage/Tne Quality Technique Rhythm/Temp Articulatin Expressin Psture/Prper Equipment Ensemble Skills Prfessinalism Intnatin, balance and blend Prtfli Reflectin This year, we will use Blgger t put tgether an nline, digital prtfli f wrk that includes all assignments and assessments thrughut each term. The prtfli will cntain all assignments and assessments thrughut the term which yu may use t shw yur prficiency twards the standards. Nte: Mst playing assessments can be turned in mre than nce if yu dn t like the way yu did it the first time. Use the feedback frm the first assessment t help yu imprve the next time. Exceptins t this are assessments such as sight-reading which require applicatin f a set f skills t new materials. Yu will be given a questinnaire t help yu cmplete a written reflectin abut yur wrk. This means that 100% f yur grade is based n yur wn assessment f yur prgress tward persnal learning gals. We will sit dwn and lk at a cllectin f wrk that yu decide t share with me. In that meeting, we decide thrugh cnversatin n what yur grade wuld be based n the prgress and imprvement shwn in their cllectin f wrk. Students will be prvided the pprtunity t be reassessed (i.e., retakes and hmewrk). Late Wrk All late/missing wrk will be lgged n the schl-wide respnsibility lg. N retakes r missed wrk will be accepted after the last schl day f the week prir t the end f each grading cycle unless prir clearance is given by me.

8 Practice and Preparatin Since music is a discipline, as well as a rewarding activity, I require my students t practice 45 minutes a day, five days a week. Hwever, I expect all students t practice as lng as they need t in rder t accmplish what I assigned t them. I try t make reasnable assignments each week based n the abilities f my students. If the assignment is nt cmpleted satisfactrily I will be left t assume the student is nt adequately prepared fr the rehearsal. If there are unique circumstances preventing practice and preparatin it is the respnsibility f the student t make thse knwn t me prir t the beginning f the rehearsal. Students shuld feel free t cntact me if they are having truble with practicing r if they d nt understand an assignment. I wuld rather knw ahead f time s I can ffer clarificatin r advice rather than having t repeat myself unnecessarily during the rehearsal. Parents We need yu, t! Parents and guardians are encuraged t assist students in their practice. They will be given instructins alngside their child in rder t best assist them during the week. Parents, siblings and ther guests are welcme t bserve rehearsals as lng as they d nt disturb the student. We need parents t assist in the fllwing capacities: Hspitality and Banquet The Hspitality Chair shall arrange fr refreshments at general meetings and ther functins. Cmmunicatins and Chaperne Cntact all members when necessary fr any vlunteer wrk r ther ntificatin needed Assure that sufficient chapernes are available t chaperne music events. Fundraising Prmting, rdering, selling and accunting fr items sld as fundraisers fr the music prgram Assist Mr Shimp with necessary arrangements fr the rchestra field trips (8 th grade) including mnitring individual student payments Orchestra Field Trips Assist rchestra directr with necessary arrangements fr the rchestra field trips (8 th grade) including mnitring individual student payments. Publicity and Dcumentatin Attend all Orchestra perfrmances and scial gatherings t prvide audi visual and pht dcumentatin A Ggle Frm will be sent via t sign up fr vlunteer spts. Instrument Care and Maintenance Cleaning Students are expected t keep instruments clean and in wrking rder. Regular cleaning shuld be dne at hme. Only prper items shuld be used t clean instruments. Students will learn at their first lessns hw t care fr their instrument. If a student is nt sure what t use t clean, PLEASE

9 ASK. Steps that shuld be fllwed include wiping utside f instrument with sft, dry clth (d nt use chemicals) Repairs Accidents DO happen, but never try t fix an instrument yurself. Tls can severely damage instruments. Never use pliers r any tl fr any reasn. Never plish with chemicals t make instruments shiny. Expsure t water can ruin string instruments. Even instruments that are prperly handled and played may need sme repairs peridically. Schl wned instruments needing repair will in mst cases be paid fr by the district unless deliberately damaged by student. Students wh wn/rent instruments are respnsible fr repairs and they shuld be dne in a timely manner. Sme minr issues may be able t be fixed in schl, s always bring it t the students teacher first. Prper handling and playing f instruments will prevent majr issues. ALWAYS ASK IF YOU ARE NOT SURE HOW TO FIX/CLEAN SOMETHING Paige s Music is an excellent cmpany t have repairs sent t. They visit ur schls weekly t deliver/pick up instruments fr repair. If renting thrugh Paige's, repairs are included in the cst f the rental. If yu rented yur instrument with Paige s Music and the instrument is in need f repair, please d the fllwing: Cmplete a repair tag (available frm directr) Call Paige s Music at and tells them the instrument needs repair. Ask fr a laner (which Paige s Music will prvide fr free as part f yur rental insurance plan) Bring the brken instrument t the rchestra rm t exchange it fr the laner. Keep yur bw, rsin, shulder rest, r any ther part f the instrument that yu wn in a safe lcatin. The laner will be drpped ff at the rchestra rm and placed in frnt f my ffice. Yu will be ntified when t return the laner t the rchestra rm and pick up yur repaired instrument. When the instrument has been repaired it will be returned t the rchestra rm. 12 11 Student leadership and Directr-appinted Psitins Title Chief learning fficer (CLO) Chief safety fficer (CSO) IT specialist (ITS) Key grip (KG) Cmmunicatins and publicity specialist (CAPS) Disk jckey (DJ) Envirnmental prtectin agent (EPA) Reprter Descriptin The CLO ensures that n ne snickers, laughs, makes fun f, r criticizes students in class. The CLO raises his r her hand and says rerun whenever there is an infractin, and the ffending student aplgizes and the student reffers his r her cntributin. The CSO says rerun fr any instances f hrseplay, grabbing, trash talking r unsafe behavir. The ffending student will back up and retrace his r her actins, aplgizing, if necessary. The ITS helps keep class technlgy running smthly and supprts ther students (r the teacher) in effectively using it. The KG acts as a general-purpse handypersn, respnsible fr setup, lighting, staging and management. KGs serve as my assistants in the perfrmance f daily classrm tasks. Tasks include checking attendance, distributing and cllecting papers, music and class sets and making sure that the rehearsal set-up is in rder. The KG als assists students in acquiring infrmatin abut an assignment they missed while they were absent. The CAPS shares news, weather reprts, class prgress n a prject, team scres n a recent quiz r class annuncements. The DJ is respnsible fr playing teacher-apprved music at pprtune times (such as when transitining activities r entering and exiting the class), using the class cmputer. The EPA ensures that the physical envirnment is ptimized - n trash r debris n the flr, waste gets recycled if pssible and the classrm is clean. Respnsible fr recrding classrm news and typing the weekly newsletter. The newsletter must include vcabulary wrds fr the next week, as well as any imprtant events. Reprter des have the freedm t add interesting features with teacher apprval. Due each Thursday.

12 Sectin leaders (First-desk players) While technical ability and gd musicianship as determined by perfrmance during a sectin leader auditin is a majr cnsideratin when I appint first-desk players, I will als assess a student s musical playing experience and leadership abilities. First-desk players are respnsible fr the fllwing: Ensure that all their sectin members have cpied the CORRECT bwings, fingerings, sticking and ther imprtant markings in their individual parts. Assist me in rganizing and running sectinal rehearsals Serve as a liaisn between myself and their respective sectins Help sectin members succeed by ffering help and guidance Mdel gd cnduct and respnsible behavir t the members f their sectin Advanced Placement Seating Every rchestra class is an interesting mix f students varying in ability. In this prgram, every student is imprtant t the success f the rchestra. Cmpetitin creates a situatin where many persns must lse in rder fr a few t win a prized status. The rchestra prgram aims t cntinue its traditin f replacing hstile cmpetitin between peers with teamwrk. AP Seating cnsists f auditins t determine chair r ensemble placement. These are cmpetitive auditins nly fr students wh are interested in assuming respnsibilities attached t sitting in the first desk. D nt get discuraged if yu dn t get the chair spt yu want, just keep practicing! Switching Instruments Switching t anther string instrument may be pssible if the numbers allw it. Infrmatin n string instrument switches will be given at the end f the year. We will rarely switch a student frm ne instrument family t anther in subsequent grade levels. The nly grade that we teach beginning level instrument instructin is in 6 th grade. Students that play an instrument in 7 th r 8 th grade will begin the year with assumptin that each student has 1 r 2 years f backgrund playing that particular instrument. That being said, we d have a prcess fr a student when they are interested in switching: There must be a need fr that particular instrument in the band r rchestra during the schl year in questin. Fr instance, if we already have 14 percussinists enrlled in 7 th grade band, we will likely nt accept any additinal. The student has t have acceptable grades in their prir year f music instructin. The student must have a gd behaviral/discipline recrd. Here is hw we determine whether smene qualifies t switch instruments: Grades (20%) we will average a student s music class grades frm each 9 week grading perid.

13 Behavir/Discipline (20%) Each student starts with 100 pints. We will deduct 5 pints fr each respnsibility lg entry, and 10 pints fr each discipline referral during the schl year Playing ability n the new instrument (60%) Students will be tested n the instrument that they desire t switch t just prir t the schl year. Students shuld plan t take lessns ver the summer n the instrument, knwing that they need t be able t play at the same level as the ther students n that instrument at the beginning f the schl year. Students will need t scre 85% r higher n the abve criteria in rder t qualify t switch. Fr example: Sally Sue is entering 7 th grade and wants t switch frm vilin t flute. She has taken lessns all summer n flute prir t her 7 th grade year. Her grades frm 6 th grade rchestra are - 9W1: A-, 9W2: B, 9W3: B+, 9W4: A. She has received 3 respnsibility lg marks ver the curse f the year, and n discipline referrals. She takes the playing test prir t the schl year n flute and scres 84/100 n that test. Here is the math: Grades (20%): A- (3.7), B (3.0), B+ (3.3), A (4.4) averages t 3.6/4.0 (cnverted t 18/20%) Discipline (20%): 100 pints 3 respnsibility lg marks (15 pts) = 85/100 (cnverted t 17/20%) Playing Test (60%): 84/100 scred (cnverted t 50.4/60%) Added tgether, =85.4% Sally Sue wuld qualify t switch frm vilin t flute Please keep in mind it is very difficult, and quite rare fr a student t make up this material n their wn, even by taking private lessns ver the summer. This has nly been successful in a few cases. Nte that taking private lessns ver the summer des nt guarantee that a student will qualify t switch instruments. General Payment and Fundraising Plicies When paying with checks r mney rders, please write the student s name n the check. If yu are unable t pay fees by the deadline, please talk t me. Students are financially respnsible fr fundraising items that they check ut. Students are respnsible fr turning in the cash equivalent f fundraising items that cannt be returned after they have been checked ut (such as fd and ther perishables). Names f students wh d nt remit fundraising mney will be submitted t administratin by March. Students wh are n-shws at an extracurricular event are required t pay all fees assciated with that event. Schlarships There are schlarships available fr rchestral private lessns. Ask fr infrmatin frm a directr, and we will d all that we can t help in yur future endeavrs.
