1 PMEA District 7 Band & Orchestra Auditins 7:30 a.m. Directrs Meeting Infrmatin Please familiarize yurself with this infrmatin befre the meeting! Upn arriving at Dallastwn High Schl, make yur way t the registratin table in the main lbby (t the left nce yu enter the schl). Yu will pick up yur schl packet with student screcards. Student Scre Cards (envelpe) Please distribute these t the students and return the cards f absent students r dubles t the labeled bin n the registratin table. If there are any crrectins, please see Daryl Balseir immediately. (Yu shuld have received an prir t this mrning t verify the accuracy f the screcards) Students shuld keep the tp prtin f the screcard (it tears ff) and give the bttm prtin t the runner r chair when they enter the first auditin rm. Auditining students will be identified by number nly, nt by name. Auditin numbers have been randmly generated. ALL Flute, Clarinet, and Trumpet students shuld knw whether they are auditining fr Upper r Lwer Band. Please check fr understanding. 2 PMEA District 7 Band & Orchestra Auditin Prcedures 1. Directrs meet befre auditins fr rll call, business items and a review f auditin prcedures. All directrs with auditining students must be in attendance. The District 7 President must apprve exceptins in advance, and an apprved substitute (PMEA member) must be prvided. 2. Chairs f the flute, spran clarinet, and trumpet cmmittees that send players t rchestra auditins will meet immediately fllwing the directr s meeting. During this meeting yu will select the auditin passages that will be used fr band auditins and fr rchestra auditins. Different passages shuld be used fr band and rchestra wind auditins. 3. Auditin cmmittees meet in the auditin areas and make judging assignments: a) scales, b) sight-reading (rchestra nly), c) sl part 1, and d) sl part 2. Whenever pssible there will be tw judges in each rm. 4. The cmmittee selects scales 1) chrmatic scale (winds/brass/strings); 2) ne sharp scale; and 3) ne flat scale. Chse whether the scales are t be slurred r tngued. 5. Cmmittee selects tw sl passages: a. Whenever pssible, ne passage shuld be lyrical and slwer in temp; the secnd passage shuld be technical and faster in temp. Be sure t chse a midpint fr each passage. b. Passages must be lng enugh t fairly evaluate student achievement. All auditining students must play the same passages. c. Cnsider time cnstraints and the size f auditining grup when selecting sl passages. d. Judges and students must use the fficially annunced editin f the sl. e. Passages marked "cadenza" and any passage declared ineligible at the directr s meeting due t misprints r cntrversy ver interpretatin may nt be selected. When in dubt (such as ssia r ptinal passages), d nt select a passage. f. ALL STUDENTS IN A SELECTED INSTRUMENT GROUP MUST PLAY THE SAME SCALES AND SOLO PASSAGES. 6. All auditining students meet in an auditin rm. a. All students must knw their assigned auditin number. Make sure they knw this! b. The students are infrmed f scales (tngued r slurred) and sl passages t be used fr auditins. c. Restarting pints (beginning and midpint) and prcedures fr the tw sl sectins will be marked at this time t avid students having t speak in the auditin rms. d. Establishing that it is kay fr them t play a few ntes f warm-up prir t perfrming in each rm will save time in the auditin prcess. e. Student questins shuld be answered at this time. f. Remind the students that they will meet in this same rm after the auditins have been cmpleted t receive their screcards and check the math t be certain we have accurate input in the tabulatin rm. g. Students are dismissed t waiting area (halls). 7. Students may nt play their instruments in the waiting area. 8. Auditin Prcess a. Auditins are "blind." Judges must have their backs t the students. Students are identified by auditin number. There shall be n cnversatin between judges and auditining students. Judges may indicate when t begin ( Student number 1428, yu may have a brief warm up and then begin when yu are ready ). DO NOT FACE THE AUDITIONEES. DO NOT ENGAGE IN CONVERSATION WITH THE STUDENTS BEYOND LOGISITICS. Students will auditin n scales first. b. Students enter the scale rm in randm rder (they may auditin when they chse), but fllw the same rder in the sl rms. c. Orchestra sight-reading will be judged in the scale rm (a separate rm will be used fr vilins). d. Students will then mve t sl rm #1, then t sl rm #2. 9. Scring Respnsibilities a. Yu must fllw the descriptrs n the "scring guides" (winds, percussin, strings, scales, sight reading). Be certain t have the crrect scring guide fr what yu are judging. PLEASE NOTE A STUDENT ONLY EARNS A ZERO (0) WHEN S/HE DOES NOT EVEN ATTEMPT TO PLAY THE SCALE/PASSAGE. IF THE CORRECT SCALE OR PASSAGE IS ATTEMPTED, AT LEAST A ONE (1) WILL BE EARNED). b. The tally sheets must be legible, signed and turned in t the chair at the end f yu cmmittees wrk. This is a vital backup that has wrked amazingly well t duble check and recver infrmatin fr tabulatrs, directrs, and students/parents in the past few years. c. Print neatly n the screcards. Yu must enter yur scres n the tally sheet and then carefully transfer the scres t the scre sheet. Enter a scre in every blank. Every blank must have a scre d nt cmbine any scres. d. Yu must enter yur scres accurately n the apprpriate tally sheet and the students screcard. As students mve frm rm t rm, screcards are prvided t the judges. Nte: yu may want t wait t enter scres n cards until a few students have auditined in rder t get a feel fr the prcess. e. Please write in ink. If yu make an errr n the screcard, please initial yur crrectin.

3 f. Judges shuld use tenths when scring. Please d nt use hundredths r thusandths (When scres are averaged, hundredths may result this is O.K.). g. Average the scres in each rm; the chair r his/her designee will enter the Grand Ttal in the last rm. AVERAGE THE SCORES IN EACH ROOM. THE CHAIR SHOULD DOUBLE CHECK ALL AVERAGES AND TOTALS. WRITE THE SUBTOTAL AVERAGES AND TOTAL/GRAND TOTAL ON THE SCORE CARDS. Yu might want t use a calculatr. h. Cards are delivered t the tabulatin rm by student messenger r the chair. Please d nt hld cards. Begin sending cards t the tabulatin rm immediately. 10. Chairpersn duties a. Return the Auditin Material Selectin sheet t the tab rm befre beginning auditins. b. Please mark the card f the final player in each sectin fr tabulatin cmmittee. c. Return the chairpersn flder with all tally sheets t the tabulatin rm immediately fllwing auditins. d. When the final scre frm an auditin sectin has been entered, a preliminary reprt is generated. CHAIRS must pick up the preliminary reprts in the tabulatin rm. Preliminary reprt and screcards are returned t the cmmittee in rder t check fr errrs. The scale scre (band) r sight-reading scre (rchestra) is used as a tiebreaker. The cmmittee members shuld cmpare the screcards and reprt t insure that all scres were entered crrectly. e. The cmmittee chair shuld, whenever pssible, be in charge f cllecting screcards and sending them t the cmputer area, verseeing tabulatin, and cntrlling flw f students frm rm t rm. There will be student runners available t assist cmmittees. 11. The judging cmmittee and the students meet as a grup (usually ca. 1:00 p.m.). Screcards are returned t students. Students check screcards fr math errrs. Any errrs must be reprted immediately t the cmmittee. SCORE CORRECTIONS CAN ONLY BE MADE WHEN THE STUDENTS ARE IN THE ROOM ONCE A STUDENT LEAVES THE ROOM CORRECTIONS WILL NOT BE MADE. All crrectins are made n the preliminary reprt and returned t the tabulatin rm. CHAIRS r their designee (an adult directr) must return the preliminary reprt t the tabulatin rm. Necessary crrectins are made, and a final reprt is generated and psted. CHAIRS r their designee: PLEASE RETURN THE PRELIMINARY REPORT WHETHER OR NOT THERE ARE CORRECTIONS PRIOR TO CONDUCTING ORCHESTRA WIND AUDITIONS. 12. Orchestra Wind Auditins a. Flute, Clarinet, and Trumpet cmmittees: Students will auditin fr rchestra after the auditin cmmittee verifies the Band auditin results. Auditin as many eligible students frm upper and lwer fr rchestra as the rchestra is accepting (i.e. if the rchestra is accepting 4 clarinets, auditin the tp 4 eligible clarinets frm upper band auditins and the tp 4 eligible clarinets frm lwer band auditins). Chairs f upper and lwer cmmittees (and any ther vlunteers r designated cmmittee members) cnduct rchestra wind; use the sl passages selected after mrning directrs meeting. PLEASE USE FOUR JUDGES FOR ORCHESTRA WINDS AND PERCUSSION AUDITIONS. WHENEVER POSSIBLE THERE MUST BE AN EQUAL NUMBER OF UPPER AND LOWER JUDGES PRESENT. DO NOT USE MORE THAN FOUR JUDGES the scring system is nt set-up t accmmdate mre than fur judges. b. Cmbined upper and lwer cmmittees d nt cnduct these auditins; the results f the mrning auditins will be used fr rchestra. c. Wind and percussin students are eligible fr rchestra nly if they play in their schl rchestra. If their schl des nt have an rchestra and they want t auditin fr rchestra, they may d s. Students must be in grades 9-12 in rder t auditin fr rchestra. Exceptins: euphnium, bass clarinet r ther instrument that are usually nt part f an rchestra wind sectin. 13. Verified results will be psted in the directr s meeting rm. DO NOT GO TO THE TABULATION ROOM TO GET RESULTS. 14. Directrs meet at the cnclusin f auditins. All directrs are required t stay until the auditins are cmpleted. 15. Festival hsts distribute student flis/music and directr packets after the directrs meeting. 16. EQUAL REPRESENTATION Any schl which des nt place a student in the Band r Orchestra thrugh the auditin prcess may place ne student in the Band and/r ne student in the string sectin f the Orchestra under representatin with the fllwing guidelines. It is the schl directr s respnsibility t request that representatin with the Auditin Chair befre leaving Dallastwn HS. The District 7 Festival Hst is encuraged t accept thse students as recmmended by the fllwing panel: Auditin Chair; District President; Festival Hst Directr; Schl Directr. Auditin rank shuld be strngly cnsidered in reaching the decisin. These students are eligible t re-auditin fr reginal Festivals. Requests d nt guarantee placement. District Band piccl player auditin prcedure: 1. Students interested in auditining fr the piccl chair shuld bring bth their flute and piccl t auditins. 2. Students will first auditin n flute. Students will be selected fr district band based upn their flute auditin. 3. Students wh are selected fr district band based upn their flute auditin will have the ptin t auditin n piccl. 4. Piccl auditins will ccur immediately fllwing rchestral flute auditins and be evaluated by the same judges. 5. All students wh have qualified fr district band and wh wish t auditin n piccl shuld reprt t the rchestra flute auditins. 6. A single piccl auditin excerpt will be selected frm the District Band flute sl by the Auditin Repertire Chair. The students will nly be asked t play this excerpt; n scales will be heard. 28 PMEA DISTRICT 7 TOTAL PERCUSSION AUDITION PROCEDURE AND REPERTOIRE Students will auditin in fur separate rms as defined belw. Auditins will emply a staggered start with an apprximately equal number f students assigned t start in each rm. Students will then rtate thrugh all fur rms until all parts f the auditin have been cmpleted. All auditins will be cmbined n upper/lwer rms. There will be (at least) tw judges in each rm. Rm 1: Xylphne (all students will use the xylphne prvided by the auditin hst schl) Requirements: 1) tw majr scales, ne sharp and ne flat (all majr scales will be required) 2) Kreisler/Green: Tamburine Chinis: beginning t the dwnbeat f m. 31 N.B.
