General Infrmatin Welcme t the editin f the WL Band Handbk. By using this user-friendly nline frmat, I hpe that yu will always find all the pertinent infrmatin yu need fr participatin in ur band prgram, whether yu are a student, parent, r friend. Infrmatin that is new fr is in bld, underlined italics. Rehearsal Plicies and Expectatins Students are expected t be in the Band Rm when the bell rings. Tardies will be strictly enfrced, and are subject t WLJSHS attendance plicies in the Student Cde f Cnduct. Nte that excessive tardies frm a class at the high schl level may result in eventual remval frm the curse! Students are expected t be seated and ready t rehearse within TWO MINUTES f the bell. Students failing t meet this expectatin will be marked as tardy fr that day. N fd (including gum) r beverages f any srt may be present r cnsumed during music rehearsals. All students must bring these required materials t their seat fr every rehearsal Instruments and necessary accessries such as reeds, muthpiece, etc. Special attachments called fr in the music (such as mutes) Pencil Flder with all current sheet music Talking while a cnductr is n the pdium is interpreted as a ttal lack f respect fr yur classmates and instructrs. Please fcus n the task at hand during the rehearsal time. Ensembles will be given tw minutes t pack up equipment at the end f class. In classes where chairs and stands are t be stacked, three r fur minutes may be allwed. Students are t remain in the Band Rm until the bell rings (unless the instructr gives special permissin t leave). Students caught leaving the classrm prir t the bell ringing withut the directr s permissin will be assigned a detentin; this is yur warning! Cncert Attire All students are required t have all items pertaining t the ensemble in which they participate. Please nte that yu need t prvide all items unless they are specifically listed as included with yur curse fee. Junir High Schl Band Unifrm Pl Shirt (prvided as part f curse fee), wrn tucked in with the tp shirt buttn pen Black dress slacks (NO jeans, skirts, r ther clrs) Black scks Black clsed-te dress shes (n tennis shes r flip-flps) High Schl Bands (Including Percussin) Ladies Lng Black Gwn (rental included with curse fee) Black hse Black clsed-te dress shes

Gentlemen Tuxed (rental included with curse fee) White wing-tip tuxed shirt (available frm any frmalwear stre... white dress shirt NOT an acceptable substitute) Black dress shes (marching band drillmasters are OK fr this) Black scks Grading Expectatins: Overview There are many required cmpnents fr successful cmpletin f ur band curses. Please make sure yu understand all aspects f any curse fr which yu register. Band grades will be based n an bjective blend f the fllwing cmpnents (all discussed n the cntinuing pages): Classrm Decrum Cncert Perfrmances (Including utside rehearsals) Daily Rehearsal Accuntability Chamber Music Expectatins Playing Assessments Written Assessments Grading: Classrm Decrum EXPECTATION: All students will cnduct themselves with the decrum f a prfessinal musician at all times during music department activities, perfrmances, and rehearsals. Students will be evaluated n their achievement in this area. Each week f band is wrth 25 pints. Students will earn a full 25 pints as a default, with deductins made fr the fllwing missed pprtunities fr achievement: Tardy: -2 Missing Required Materials: -2 (pencil, music, musical accessry, r flder), -5 (instrument) Packing up early: -2 Failure t assist with required clean-up: -2 Deliberate r Careless Classrm Disruptins: -1 t -5 depending n severity There will be randm pencil checks this year t ensure that every stand has a pencil n it at every rehearsal. As afrementined, 2 pints will be deducted frm the daily grade fr nt having a pencil. If the stand is being shared by tw peple, bth f the students will have pints deducted. Grading: Cncerts and Outside Rehearsals EXPECTATION: All students will participate in all required ensemble cncerts and utside rehearsals fr their class.

Each cncert will be assigned a grade value f 100 pints. It is assumed that all students will earn a perfect scre, with grade deductins resulting frm the fllwing: Tardy t cncert call time: -25 Imprper Cncert Attire: -25 per infractin Behavir Prblem: -10 t -100 depending n severity Unexcused Absence: -100 Outside rehearsals are a required cmpnent fr many cncerts we give in the WL band prgram, due t the need t crdinate students acrss different classes. These rehearsals ccur in varying frequencies based n the perfrmance demands f each cncert. Grading fr crdinatin rehearsals will be in additin t the 100 pint cncert grade. Crdinatin rehearsals will be wrth 50 pints each. Grade deductins will result frm the fllwing: Tardy t required crdinatin rehearsal: -15 Absent frm required crdinatin rehearsal: -50 Since cncerts are the primary exams in Band, there are very few excused situatins fr absence. Our classes are "C- Curricular" which means that events ccurring utside f the schl day are required fr the curse requirements and grading! Nte that this differs frm "Extra-Curricular" fferings (like athletics r clubs) where there are n academic ramificatins fr absence. While this list is nt exhaustive, this shuld give yu sme idea what is and what is nt allwable: EXCUSED ABSENCES FROM A CONCERT INCLUDE SEVERE illness verified with physician's dcumentatin. Minr sniffles that can be rapidly crrected with ver-the-cunter medicatin are nt cnsidered excusable. IHSAA-sanctined single-eliminatin athletic playff events Seasn-ending WCJC (JH) athletic events Reginal-level (r beynd) schl-sanctined Academic cmpetitins (ONLY if the club spnsr determines the member t be cmpletely indispensable t that rganizatin) Sudden emergency situatins (such as the death f a family member) may be apprved by the directr. Recgnized religius hlidays r widely understd church-mandated absences, when frmal dcumentatin is given AND the request is made IN WRITING 30 r mre days prir t the required music event. EXCUSED ABSENCES FROM A COORDINATION REHEARSAL INCLUDE All excused cncert absence criteria, PLUS: Participatin in a sprt r academic cmpetitin during that time (perfrmance takes precedence ver practice) Cnflicting rehearsal r practice (PARTIALLY APPROVED: the verlapping time must be split 50/50, with travel time between activities taken evenly ut f each) Absence frm schl that day due t illness (n physician nte necessary) UNEXCUSED CONCERT ABSENCE REQUESTS HAVE INCLUDED Emplyment cnflicts; I will never apprve an absence due t the fact that yu frgt t ask ff frm wrk. Studying r ding hmewrk (part f being in ANY rganizatin is planning yur schedule carefully. Dn't cmmit t ANYTHING yu can't fllw thrugh with!) Family vacatins Regular seasn HS and JH athletic events, including nn-ihsaa-run turnaments Nn-schl-related club sprts Malfunctining musical equipment

Illness withut physician r schl nurse dcumentatin Undisclsed "persnal reasns" Exams such as the SAT r ACT (these exams ffer multiple dates, and therefre are avidable) ANY utside event when a written request (backed with frmal dcumentatin) is nt filed 30 r mre days prir t the required music event. (Applies t Wind Ensemble and Symphny Orchestra Only) ANY requested absence fr ISSMA State Cncert Finals with the exceptins f a family death OR current hspitalizatin f the band member. UNEXCUSED COORDINATION REHEARSAL ABSENCE REQUESTS HAVE INCLUDED All unexcused cncert absence criteria EXCEPT fr cnflicting athletic and academic cmpetitins. Requests t miss mre than half f the ttal available rehearsal time due t cnflicting events. MAKING UP EXCUSED ABSENCES FROM CONCERTS Hpefully, it is clear by nw that cncerts are extremely imprtant t ur prgram, and absences frm cncerts are nt taken lightly. When circumstances demand a cncert absence, students must make up the prgram by cmpleting the fllwing: A written critique f the perfrmance vide, including a minimum f 250 wrds detailing each f the band's majr sectins (wdwind, brass, percussin) and 250 wrds regarding verall perfrmance achievement. (due ne week after receiving the perfrmance vide frm ne f the directrs) Exact written assessment parameters may change depending n the specific aspects f that cncert. Students cmpleting this task n time will receive full credit fr the cncert. Students failing t meet this requirement n time will receive a grade f ZERO fr the perfrmance. MAKING UP EXCUSED ABSENCES FROM COORDINATION REHEARSALS Students may make up missed crdinatin rehearsals with tw study hall/lunch practice sessins (verified by Mr. Pettit r anther music teacher). Students have ne week t make up missed crdinatin rehearsal absences, r the previusly listed pint deductin will be applied. Grading: Daily Rehearsal Accuntability EXPECTATION: All students will play daily in class and make a gd musical cntributin t their rganizatin. In perfrmance music, every single rehearsal is imprtant because each prvides the student with a certain amunt f physical cntact time with their band instrument. An absence fr ANY reasn means that the student has lst that cntact time, and therefre needs t catch up with their classmates. If the band plays n a particular day, there are ABSOLUTELY NO EXCUSED ABSENCES frm making up missed class time. ANY rehearsal absence fr ANY reasn (parent excused, field trip, hliday, etc.) must be made up with 30 minutes f utside practice time (verified by a parent if the practice happens at hme, verified by Mr. Pettit r anther music

teacher if it happens at schl). Any absences nt made up within a week f the student's return t schl will result in the lss f pints fr that day (5 pints). This item has caused sme cnfusin in the past, mstly because the student felt that a variety f excuses (field trips, weddings, attending services) wuld exempt them frm this requirement. Simply put: if yu miss an in-class assignment in a math class, yu are expected t make this up, as it was determined t be part f the necessary educatin prcess f the class. If yu miss a pp quiz in scial studies, yu will make this up upn yur return, ut f fairness t the rest f the students in the class wh were present that day. This is nt cnsidered a punishment r unfair treatment!! Missing a day in a music class is n different; this is an academic activity, and making up missed material is part f standard academic practice. Please stay n tp f this; there have been sme students wh lst their "A" in band due t excessive unrecvered absences! Grading: Chamber Music EXPECTATION: All students will participate in all required chamber music activities (small ensembles) fr their class. JUNIOR HIGH BANDS All students will participate in a small ensemble in the 2015 ISSMA Sl/Ensemble Cntest *OR* will prepare a small ensemble as if they were t attend. Grading is based n the scres given at the Sl/Ensemble festival r by the staff's evaluatin based n the same grading criteria. Students will be respnsible fr paying their wn ISSMA Sl/Ensemble entry fee f $13 per sl and $7 per member f an ensemble. This payment must be submitted with the Sl/Ensemble frm that every student will receive. HIGH SCHOOL BANDS ISSMA Sl/Ensemble festival is OPTIONAL, but highly encuraged, and class time will be prvided t any ensemble wh registers. Class time will nt be allwed fr sl practice. Students will be respnsible fr paying their wn ISSMA Sl/Ensemble entry fee f $13 per sl and $7 per member f an ensemble. This payment must be submitted with the Sl/Ensemble frm that every student will receive. Grading: Playing Assessments EXPECTATION: All students will demnstrate their playing level and practice habits thrugh playing tests thrughut the schl year.

All playing tests may be retaken ONCE fr an imprved grade. The retest must be dne at a time utside the nrmal class time (befre r after schl, lunch, etc.) Students are expected t maintain a high level f perfrmance quality thrughut the year. Hme practice is a majr, nging assignment in ur band classes, and students wh fail t cmplete their hmewrk rarely experience academic success in their classes. JH BANDS AND HS WIND BANDS Playing exams are given as needed t ensure apprpriate individual musical develpment. Playing tests are wrth 50 pints. Nte that frm the day a new piece f music is distributed, students have ONE WEEK t learn the ntes and rhythms. Playing tests may ptentially ccur at any time beynd that ne-week grace perid. Grading: Written Assessments EXPECTATION: All students will demnstrate imprved cntent knwledge thrugh cmpletin f written assignments and exams. In an effrt t verify that all students are learning mre than simple perfrmance skills, sme written assessment tls may be emplyed in all WL Band classes. These simple assignments will be wrth 20 pints each, with written exams being wrth 50 pints. These are geared tward music thery, histry, and ear training. All standard academic plicies written in the Student Cde f Cnduct will be enfrced. The first ccurrence f academic dishnesty will result in a zer n the assignment. Any additinal ccurrences f academic dishnesty will result in failure f the curse. Late wrk will nt be accepted except in cases f absence as described in the Student Cde f Cnduct. It is nt expected that these assignments will cause even a mderate increase in a band student's hmewrk lad, as mst assignments can be successfully cmpleted in minutes. At this time, it is nt yet determined if there will be a written final exam fr high schl band classes. This will be dependent n the demnstratin f cntent knwledge and imprvement by all band students thrughut each semester. Percussin Addendum While many f the curse plicies are the same as the winds, the percussin sectin has a smewhat different set f respnsibilities in terms f setting up fr each class, the clean-up prcedure, etc. Please review these additinal prcedures carefully! Daily Set-Up

It is expected that the percussin sectin will be ready t play within tw minutes f the tardy bell. Percussinists are expected t jin the band during the warm up and failure t d s will result in a tardy. This WILL require yu t be in the classrm in advance f the bell. A music rder will be either n the dry-erase bard OR n the prjectr screen. If yu are maintaining prper implement lists fr yur music, setup shuld be an extremely easy task. It is the respnsibility f the percussin manager t ensure this prcess happens every day. See the descriptin fr percussin manager in the Student Band Officers sectin f the handbk. Rehearsal Students may be asked t rehearse in full ensemble, in smaller grups in the practice rms, r in individual practice n assigned music. There shuld never be a time where a student "has nthing t d." All students are expected t have the apprpriate implements ready fr the rehearsal f their piece. Any delay will result in the lss f participatin pints. Students are always expected t have a pencil n hand. Final Annuncements and Clean-Up Fllwing annuncements, EVERY student is expected t cntribute t the clean-up prcess. Very few f ur percussin items are t stay ut in the classrm. Nearly every item has a shelf r cabinet lcatin at this time, s make sure that items are returned t the prper lcatin. Stays in the Band Rm and nt in a cabinet r the strage rm: Timpani (cvers MUST be n) Bass Drum One set f Bells One Xylphne Yamaha Vibes One Yamaha Marimba Practice and Hmewrk Very few percussin students will ever be in a psitin t wn all the instruments they are expected t play in this kind f ensemble. Therefre, percussin students are expected t put in a fair amunt f practice time n the schl instruments. There are n classes in the band rm during HS Lunch, 1st hur, r 8th hur, and the practice rms are ften available fr student wrk the rest f the day. Mr. Pettit, Mrs. Letcher and Mr. Waltz will give study hall passes as needed, but understand that yu are expected t be wrking the entire time yu're in the area.

Reprting Absences and Tardies frm Outside Events All absences and tardies frm band activities happening utside f schl hurs must be reprted via the band website. There will be n ther acceptable way t submit this infrmatin unless the band website is dwn fr maintenance. T access this page, fllw these instructins: 1. G t the band website 2. Lg in (Yur student will prvide the registratin cde fllwing the first day f classes. If yu had an accunt last year, yu must create an accunt again because all accunts are deleted at the end f each year.) 3. Click n "Absence/Tardy Frm" under the Student Menu 4. Fill ut all infrmatin as requested. Be as specific as pssible. 5. Click "Submit" when all infrmatin is entered. A cpy will be sent t the address yu prvided. 6. Yu shuld fill ut ne frm per student per event. 7. Mr. Pettit will respnd t yur request as described n the website. HOW FAR IN ADVANCE SHOULD I FILL THIS OUT? As sn as yu knw f a cnflict, get it in the system. HOW LATE CAN I FILL THIS OUT AND STILL BE VALID? Fr knwn rehearsal cnflicts, this needs t cme in a minimum f 24 hurs befre the expected absence r tardy t be apprved. Fr cncert absence requests, 30 days ntice is required. Sudden changes (such as illness, rescheduled games, etc.) may still be submitted thrugh the absence system. CAN MY PARENT FILL THIS OUT FOR ME? Abslutely! They might have mre infrmatin n yur utside activities than yu d!! I'M SICK AND HOME FROM SCHOOL TODAY- SHOULD I FILL OUT A FORM FOR TODAY'S ABSENCE? Prbably NOT. If yu're nly missing the regular band class, then NO - yu shuld be called in sick t the attendance ffice. The Band frm des NOT replace that particular call. If yu're missing an after-schl r evening rehearsal r perfrmance, then YES, yu need t fill the frm ut. CAN I JUST BRING IN A NOTE FROM HOME? NO. This desn't help t streamline this prcess. Yu may be asked t bring in a nte f cnfirmatin (such as a dctr's nte) if the absence is serius enugh. Fr mst attendance details, the website frm will be sufficient. CAN MY PARENT JUST CALL YOU? N. There is n lng term dcumentatin in that methd.

I TOLD YOU YESTERDAY THAT I WOULD BE TARDY TO THE COORDINATION REHEARSAL. WHY ISN'T MY TARDY EXCUSED? Prbably because yu didn't fill ut the frm n the website. With ver 300 students, it is impssible t remember every attendance detail fr every event. Take a lk at ur event calendar, and imagine ne persn remembering attendance details fr every ne f thse activities. I DIDN'T HEAR BACK FROM YOU ON MY ATTENDANCE REQUEST. SHOULD I ASSUME IT WAS APPROVED? N. Assume it didn't g thrugh and make anther request! Mr. Pettit prcesses these things pretty quickly after arrival. DOES THIS WEBSITE FORM ACTUALLY HELP? Yu have n idea!! This keeps all attendance requests in ne place, srted by day f activity. It is a huge help. Required Curse Materials Students are expected t prvide certain materials fr their participatin in the varius band classes. Please lcate yur instrument t find the materials yu are expected t have fr participatin. If yur child uses a schl-wned instrument, they will be given a frm frm the band department that will need t be submitted alng with yur rental fee at the beginning f the schl year. Unfrtunately, sticker shck tends t set in pretty quickly when yu lk at all f the small items that g in a typical percussinist's inventry. I recmmend the Innvative Percussin Fundamental Series Cllege Primer Pack t cmfrtably cver all the sticks and mallets that any reasnable student percussinist shuld have in their arsenal. While I try t avid recmmending specific cmpanies fr purchase, this particular link shws this particular kit and the items available: Understandably, it may nt be pssible t acquire all f these items at nce. I recmmend the fllwing rder f acquisitin: * Snare sticks (required f ALL percussinists). Vic Firth SD1 General r equivalent * Drum key (cheap and small) -- NOT available in the previusly listed percussin kit * One pair Yarn Mallets. IP240 r equivalent * Bell/Xylphne Mallets.
