THEATRE PROGRAM BACKGROUND: The theatre prgram here at Faribault High Schl has had a lng traditin f utstanding theatrical prductins, starting with Mr. Michael J. Hansn, wh was the FHS theatre directr until He began by staging plays in what is nw the student center. There was a slightly raised cement stage n the end where all f the snack machines are lcated that served as the main stage fr prductins. Mr. Hansn was able t get a great number f students invlved in his prductins. He was als able t expand the number f shws perfrmed frm tw t fur. Hansn wuld have a fall play, a spring musical and sme years, tw musicals. When Hansn had a theatre lab class, there wuld be an Opus prductin during the semester, s the students wh were studying in the class culd shw what they had learned. In 1985, when the new Middle Schl building was cmpleted, there was als a 350-seat theatre where Hansn prduced the high schl shws. Mr. Hansn became ill in 1993, and althugh he did design a lt f the theatre spaces yu 3

4 get t wrk in tday, beginning with crude drawings n napkins t lists f ideas t be incrprated, he never was able t see this final prduct. He passed away in The theatre was cmpleted in February In the years when he was t ill t direct, thers stepped in t keep the prgram prducing shws. Mary Wilfart directed a number f plays fr FHS, while Kathy Rush directed the One Act play cmpetitin pieces. Shrtly befre his death, he was infrmed that it was ging t be named The Michael J. Hansn Perfrming Arts Center. He was mved. It is the intent f this directing team t cntinue what was begun, t expand the pprtunities t learn abut the art and craft f theatre, and t grw thrugh theatrical experiences. T this end, this seasn, we will be prducing three large main stage prductins fall play, winter children s theatre, and spring musical. We will als help spnsr a variety shw, t raise mney fr the Michael J. Hansn Perfrming Arts Schlarship. The drama club Executive Cmmittee is made up f seven t nine students (depending upn the year) and are selected by a grup f executives and directrs thrugh a prcess which includes a frmal essay and an infrmal interview. They are respnsible fr the fllwing: A. Grup activities planned in September, December, and February/March B. The Senir, Junir, and Secretary Executive Cmmittee members will schedule and have meetings nce r twice a mnth after schl r in hme rm in the Black Bx. (During their Hmerm is preferred if a schedule can be wrked ut at that time) C. Meetings with all executive cmmittee members will be held nce a mnth in the black bx. D. Full meetings, with all members expected t attend, will be scheduled a minimum f tw times a year September and May. [The September meeting is t kick ff the schl 5

6 year s theatre prgram with a recruitment meeting and seasn annuncements. The May meeting will be fr the purpse f finalizing their pints in pssibly lettering in theatre] E. The Executive Cmmittee is in charge f and nt limited t the fllwing: Planning three activities a schl year and finding adult chapernes (Chapernes can be parents/guardians as lng as ne t tw directrs are als present at the activity); Planning and wrking at a fund-raiser during the schl year r summer mnths; Designing, selling, rdering, and delivering drama t-shirts; Aiding in cllectin f the activity fees; Being at all f the drama club meetings; Vicing the pinins f their members at the meetings; and wrk as assigned. 1. Junir Executive: helps all executives, runs all fund-raising cmmittees, runs meetings the president cannt attend 3. Executive Secretary: takes ntes at meetings, s minutes t executives and directr(s), keeps a cpy f the minutes in a three-ring binder, psts ntices n callbard, advertises all club activities 4. Executive cmmittee members will be put int grups and be invlved with Fund Raisers, Open Mic, Imprvisatinal night, Advertising, T-shirts, Psters, Phts, Trips and ther activities AUDITIONING: Auditins will be annunced ahead f time. Get int the rutine f checking ut the callbard in the hallway between the chrus rm and the Black Bx. There are three verall types f auditins held here at FHS. They are: cld reading (dancing), imprvisatin, and prepared reading (singing). The cld reading is just what it suggests - the persn auditining gets t see the cutting they are t read shrtly befre they auditin, and they nly have a mment r tw t prepare. Imprvisatin is being given a task r character, and the persn auditining is expected t jump right in and g with what little infrmatin they have and begin a scene. The prepared auditin is where the persn auditining has had the pprtunity t prepare the piece, whether reading r singing. 6

7 We have been asked time and time again: What d yu lk fr in an auditin? It depends largely upn what style f auditin we are cnducting at the time; hwever, there are a few items that are similar in all types f auditins. VOICE: Can we hear them? Is it clear? Des the rate change? Des the pitch change? DICTION: Prnuncing difficult wrds crrectly? Enunciating wrds? CHARACTER: Is there a develpment f a character? Is the character believable? ENERGY: Des the auditining persn shw signs f energy? POISE: Hw des the persn lk n stage - in cntrl r nt? Sme specifics we lk fr in auditins are as fllws: Cld Readings (dancing): the auditining persn tries t DO smething with the piece; even if it is wrng, it is better than just standing there reading it! Shwing a bit f dance attitude during the dance auditin als helps. Imprvisatin: the persn auditining lets lse and ver exaggerates whatever they were asked t d! Prepared Reading (singing): We like t see them memrized. Peple wh have wrked the piece are easy t spt ver thse wh lked at it fr five minutes r never at all. Prepared means prepared! The biggest thing in an auditin that we lk fr is the ww factr. Smene cmes in and is s n target with their energy; we have t say ww! We als want the prcess f auditining t be a learning experience. Fr tw weeks after the auditin prcess, yu may set up an appintment with the directr t g ver yur auditin critique. Yu can learn frm this fr the next rund f auditins. Students in the past wh have taken advantage f this usually end up imprving their casting chances. REMEMBER: Everyne has a chance t get int a shw. We dn t precast! But if yu are nt cast it is NOT a reflectin n yu as a persn! 7
