Instrution and Catalog (No. 21) Book overing the PRINTING PRESSES TYPE and SUPPLIES Manufatured and Sold by The Sigwalt Mfg. Co N. Lawndale Avenue CHICAGO, U. S. A.
Muh pleasure and profit an be seured from a small printing outfit. Various are the uses to whih a printing press an be put : for instane, parents an add it as an aid in the eduation of their hildren ; lawyers an save expense by having the offieboy print their briefs, offie forms and stationery ; merhants have many piees printed eah year on eah of whih their own plant would seure eonomy and permit prompt prodution; and the minister, dotor, dentist and the shool-master ould use a printing-press to advantage and profit. For these real reasons: The Chiago and Ideal Presses are simple in onstrution; are built of the finest materials by expert mehanis ; are built to last; beause the setting of standard printers' type is so simple that any young hild soon masters it. Type-setting is not at all tiresome, neither is the running of a printing-press hard work ; after a little pratie one stops to think how he ever had the idea that printing was diffiult to learn. You an soon learn to be a printer right in your own home by reading the areful instrutions farther on in this book. A PRINTING PRESS WILL PROFIT YOU Have you ever figured how many millionaires Start early! started in life as amateur printers? Their equipment was small, but their ambitions were large. The same opportunities now exist for you. If you live in a small town having no newspaper or regular bulletin, start one. Be its reporter, its printer, its owner, and, in a short time, it will earn a profit and make a reputation for you in your ommunity. HERE'S HOW TO MAKE MONEY There is no investment that brings better returns (with the least labor and expenditure) than that made in a printing i outfit.. With energy and appliation, any man, woman, boy or girl an build up a monev-making business. L
Amongst others, a good plan is propose a small Sunday-shool paper he will, no doubt, assist in getting subsriptions and advertisements, and furnish eah week or so, short hurh artiles. to go to your minister and Then, again, interest your friends in ordering their ards, envelopes, letter-heads, offie stationery, forms and advertising matter of you. Find out who the seretaries of the town lodges are, go to them, and they will generally give you at least part of their requirements. There's a variety of work waiting for you at nearly every door, and if you have the ambition and the energy, it's yours and money in your poket. IMPORTANT The Chiago and Ideal Printing Presses are built on exatly the same priniple as the presses used in all printing establishments. They are not toys, but pratial presses apable of produing the best of printed matter. They are built to last, with only the best of materials entering into their onstrution, and are finely finished. Two rollers are used to insure effiient distribution of ink, regularly resulting in evenly-inked printings. It is espeially easy to learn to properly operate these outfits it is so simply, plain and pratial the expliit and exellent set of suggestions ontained herein will be found a quik, aurate and sure guide to the proper prodution of good printing. The ompany who manufatures this press is fully established, and plaes a broad guarantee on its produt. VARIOUS AND VALUABLE USES Motion-Piture Theatres: The man who has a motionpiture theatre knows that he must issue printed matter regularly. He has to have folders, dodgers, show bills, show ards and stationery. No reason on earth why he should not own his own printing outfit. His mornings are not busy he works in the afternoons and evenings. Eah morning ould be devoted to the prodution of his own printing with a saving most satisfying.
Druggists: Using quantities of kbels, blanks, envelopes, statements and wrappers and suh for their own preparations, find a printing outfit a wonderful investment from both eor omy and onveniene standpoints. Stationers: How many alls for visiting ards, envelopes, and other small and profitable jobs? They, also, should have their own printing outfits and keep the profits to themselves Commission Houses: There are lulls in business eah day You an print your own market reports, market letters an<? stationery. With but brief experiene, these items an be produed daily, weekly and monthly on time, in any quantity, at a deidedly less expense. Hotels, Restaurants and Confetionaries : How gratifying it would be to the managers of these establishments to produe their own printing and get the work out exatly when needed, and, besides, save money on every job as additional profit. Wholesale Clothiers, Dry Goods, Groers and Manufaturers: There is always some one about these businesses who would readily take to printing and who ould spare ample time eah day in whih to print prie-tags, shippings-tags, envelopes, letter-, bill-heads, and all other blanks or forms. In fat, firms ould pay a young man or boy a regular salary, and still save on their annual printing bills. Churhes: There are hundreds of ministers eah of whom owns one of our presses. Eah prints his own hurh paper, Sunday-shool literature, tikets, programs, posters, hoir ^ lists, pledge envelopes, et. The money saved eah time is profit earned to be invested in desirable ways. Equipping the shools of the ountry with print- Shools: ing outfits would benefit alike both teahers and sholars. There are many printing jobs that are required during a year. Nearly all ould be exeuted on one of our presses. A Chiago r Ideal printing outfit would instrut ambitious young men the basis of and women suffiiently about printing to make it their future areers. Printing, as^ a ourse for any of the pupils who desire it, should be available. Lodges : Eah ould save by supplying its seretary with a printing outfit. Noties, post-ards, irulars, envelopes, tikets, and all other neessary material therefor, ould be printed at greatly redued osts. Motor-Bus, Taxiab and Express Companies : Find a omplete and ompat printing outfit a most effiient, eonomial
and energeti adjunt to their business, by whih to broadast the emergenies, speial offers and hanging onditions whih exist in these lines of publi servie. Postmasters: Espeially those who have muh time on their hands ould, with one of our outfits, earn many a dollar printing ards, envelopes, letter-heads, et. ; and, if possessed of a liking for newspaper work, start a weekly paper with profit and without negleting their offies. Buthers and Groers: These are only two of a number of loal retailers who are onstantly using printed matter suh as wrappers, labels, bill-heads, hek-books, order-bopks and statements. Some young man around eah store is lever enough to operate the press during his leisure time, and to employ it profitably. The Teaher: Eah shool teaher should own a printing press, as the thousands who do own them now would not be without them. They use their presses for many purposes too numerous to mention, with profit, satisfation and pleasure. Merhants: Inrease their business many times by printing their own advertising appeals. This is the way to forge ahead; this is the way to bring ustomers into the store. The new and extra business will pay for a printing outfit, whih will also produe their stationery, blanks and forms at lower osts. NEVER OUT OF ORDER There is no danger of our presses getting out of order they are arefully onstruted they are built to last We point with pride to the thousands of our presses now in use whose owners' praise is without reserve or limit. Some of our presses now in use by boys who are editors of weekly papers, have reords of more than a million printings a year, and are still as effiient as when they left our fatory. THE OFFICE BOY Often business men laim that they have no time to use a printing press. The offie boy or offie assistant an always find many free moments during whih to print the store or offie requirements for printed matter. LOCAL VIEWS AND POST-CARDS In every loality, partiularly in the smaller towns in the popular summer and winter resorts, somebody must print the
messages on the post-ards, showing loal pitures in olor. And blak-and-white views are easily printed from plates made from the original photographs. Don't let someone a thousand miles away ome into your town and make a profit from this soure. With one of our presses you an print your own blak-and-white ards, and also finish the olored ards. This hannel of profit is often overlooked. DULL SEASONS This is the time to use a printing press. Get up a sale of odds and ends at near ost ; print your own hand-bills, distribute them arefully, and see how quikly business will pik up. This profit pays for your outfit. Then you an enthuse over all your printing press is doing for you. HOW TO SET TYPE AND HOW TO PRINT IT Sorting the Type Carefully unpak the omplete outfit, seeing that no artiles are overlooked. m Then, the first operation is to "lay" the type w r hih is supplied with eah outfit. This is the plaing of the type in the designated boxes in the ase, as shown in the illustration below. Put not more than one style or "fae" of type in the same ase, beause if you do, onfusion and mistakes will our. The low blanks without any haraters on them are "spaes" and "quads." The thinner ones are "spaes," beause they are used to separate words from one another. The larger ones, "quads," fill out lines in blank wherever no type is to be inserted. Put these "spaes" and "quads" in the boxes as shown in the piture. Put the two largest sizes (equalling two and
; three "squares" or "ems") together in the box marked "quads." The next size is the box marked "m-quad," whih quad is square. The next in the "n-quad," of whih two make a square. Then the "-m spae," three making a square. Then the "4-m spae," four making a square, and so on. Now the ase is filled, and the type ready to be set up. Type Sizes On the page of this book headed "Type Faes," the type sizes are shown in the various styles. A "point" is the basis of all type sizes, and there are 72 points to the inh. Therefore, a type fae on a 12-point base, would measure l/6th of an inh or six lines to the inh. The six-point type, listed as the smallest, is one-half the size of twelve-point. Eight-point type is two points thiker than the six-point. Ten-point type is four points thiker than the sixpoint. Leads and Slugs "Leads" (whih are blank and are used to separate full lines of type) are two points thik ; "slugs" (used for the same purpose as "leads") are six points thik, same as the smallest type. Thus it will take three "leads" to make the same thikness as a "slug," or six points. "Leads" and "slugs" may be used in ombination in order to seure any line spaing desired. Type Measures It is important that eah printer be familiar with type measure, so he an tell eah size of line he is handling. The standard of type measure is 12 points, or a "pia" (so alled by printers), whih is l/6th of an inh or six lines to one inh. In setting a job two inhes wide, it would be set to 12 pias, et. The blank "leads" and "slugs," whih are used to separate the lines of type after they are set, are all ut to standard "pia" measurements in lengths varied to your requirements. Setting the Type Before beginning to set type, always get the exat measurement of the ard or paper upon whih you are going to print then allow enough spae for margins (the margin is the spae between the type and the edge of the paper or ard upon
1 whih you are to print) so as to make a good-looking piee of work. Margins on this lass of work run from one-sixth to one inh. For example: If the ard measures 1^ inhes by inhes (same as ard shown on following page), you would set your omposing-stik (in whih the type is set) to 16 pias typemeasure, allowing one pia or l/6th of an inh on all sides for margins. If, at present, you do not happen to have a omposing-stik, set your type in the hase (frame) belonging to the press. Manner of holding the Compos- 1 ing Stik But you must have a omposing-stik to do really aurate work. Take up any piee of type and examine it. On the lower part of the body you will find one or more "niks" or "nothes." These niks will guide you to set the type all one uniform and proper way. After adjusting your omposing-stik to the width of the job you wish to print, hold the stik in the left hand with the opening in the position illustrated on this page. Begin to set the type from the left to the right, with the "nik" on the lower part of the type faing you. When setting the name and address for a ard, first insert a "lead" or "slug" of the hosen width, and then set the name, plaing the letters one by one in the "stik" until you have the full name set up ; then "enter" it by putting the same amount of "spaes" and "quads" on either side of the name, and set it tight enough so the type will stand firm and "on its feet in the "stik." Now follow similarly with the address line, putting the name of the street at the left side and the name of ity at the right side of the "stik," with enough "spaes" and "quads" in the enter to make the line equally as tight as the line with the name, after whih insert another "lead" or "slug."
When you have set as muh matter as is required in the omposing-stik, take it out in the following manner: The type form is grasped with both hands, the middle finger of eah hand being pressed tightly against the ends of the form and the thumbs and first fingers lamping the top and bottom of the form tightly together. Thus it may be lifted out ompletely and plaed wherever desired. After taking the lines out of your "stik," and putting them in the "galley," separate them with the "leads" and "slugs" to the desired distane apart. If you have no "galley" to work on, put the form diretly in the "hase" belonging to the press. A "galley" is a very handy artile in the print-shop. Carefully proof-read and orret all type-forms before loking up. Loking Up Forms of Type You now need an "imposing stone," or small marble slab, upon whih to lok up the form in the "hase," as it is very important to have the type of an even and uniform surfae before printing. Plae the "hase" on the stone, and put the job you have set, into it. (The hase is the iron frame whih is made to hold the type in the press.) When the "hases" are not equipped with srews, put the type-form therein, fill in the spaes left with the wooden furniture, leaving enough room at bottom and one side for "quoins," as listed in this atalog. Then tighten up the "quoins" with the key furnished therefor, being sure the form is all loked seurely before fully lifting, then hase an be plaed in the press. Regarding Chases With Srews If you have one of our presses whih has a "hase" with srews, you will notie that the "hase" is filled with strips of wood of different thiknesses. This is alled "wood furniture," and is used to blok the type in the hase after it has been set ^. When setting type in the "hase," plae the "hase" before you on an "imposing stone," or smooth marble slab, with the top of the hase farthest from you. Loosen the srews and make a spae equal to the size of the job you are going to set up. Keep the niks (whih are on the lower part of the type) away from you, faing the top of the hase ; plaing the type
in the hase one by one, beginning at the left, and putting a spae between eah two words. MR, CHARLES TODD 200 MADISON STREET CHICAGO When setting the name for a ard, it is set up as shown in the printed ard hereon, and "justified" by plaing an equal number of "spaes" and "quads" on eah side of the type to make up the full measure of the hase. By "justifying" is meant the filling out of a line so that it is full and tight, so that when the "form" is loked up and you put it on the press no letters will be loose and work out. After you have all your lines set up and properly "justified," you then tighten the srews at the bottom of the hase; but before you set the srews fully, take a "planer," or flat blok of wood, and plae it on the form ; then take a "mallet," or a small hammer, and tap lightly upon the blok. This will even up the type and assure a uniformly-printed job. Putting Forms on the Press Before plaing the "hase" in the press, put a small quantity of ink on the "ink-plate," and work the lever bak and forth until you have fully distributed the ink on the plate and rollers. Now set the hase in its plae in the press, take an "impression" on the "tympan" the tympan onsists of several sheets of ordinary print, or news paper; a medium heft of press board, or strong ard board with a strong, smooth sheet of paper for the top draw sheet, to plae or stik the guides through the paper you have lamped on the surfae whih reeives the impression. Plae the ard of the sheet upon whih you are to print, over the printed impression you have taken on the "tympan," and mark with a penil where you wish to set your guides so as to get the proper margins. Put "guage pins" or guides one at the left side and two at the _
Bottom of the sheet or ard. If you have no guides as shown in tle rr-jsellaneous prie list, ut three narrow strips of ardboard, fold them over in the shape of a "V," and paste me side of the ardboard on the lines you have marked on the tympan. Guides must be arefully plaed in order to have the printed matter show uniform margins. Making Ready to Run There should be suffiient "impression" to transfer the ink from the type to the stok upon whih you are printing. If the printed matter does not show up properly, more impres- needed, and you must add one or more sheets under sion is the tympan-sheet until all is plain and lear. If printing is too heavy, and punhes through the ard or paper, take one or more sheets from under the tympan until you get a satisfatory impression. Study the Piture This piture shows the prinipal parts of the press so that the budding printer may readily see what is meant by the inkplate, hase, gripper, platen, et. The grippers are movable, and are used to hold the paper on the platen and keep the paper from stiking to the inked type. Always take an impression on the tympan so as to find just where to "set" the grippers ; then set them lose to the printing. Care should be taken not to run the grippers through the type form, for, by so doing, the type will be damaged beyond all usefulness. The tympan-lamps (or Bales) are attahed to the platen and are used to fasten the tympan-paper on the platen. Keep Everything Clean and Orderly After you get through with eah job, lean the press, rollers and type-form by washing them with a little benzine or kerosene preferably on a rag and sometimes a brush to remove the partly dried ink from the type.
