Minr level applied lessns are intended t prepare a student fr an auditin int the percussin majr level, fr music educatin majrs pursuing study beynd the Percussin Methds curse, fr cmpsers wishing t learn abut percussin instruments and ntatin, r music minrs enrlled in curses that require minr level study. Permissin t register fr minr level lessns must be granted by Dr. Schaft and the Dana Directr. Dr. Schaft will schedule an auditin/interview and subsequently make a recmmendatin t the Dana Directr. Pending their apprval, the student may register fr the recmmended curse. Each curse is ne (1) semester hur credit and is ffered at the fllwing levels: 1500A freshman level 1500B freshman level 2600A sphmre level 2600B sphmre level 3700A junir level 3700B junir level 5800A senir/graduate level 5800B senir/graduate level Each curse cnsists f 15 weekly thirty- minute lessns. A final exam (jury) may be required as determined by the instructr. Percussin Seminar class attendance is nt required. The student must cncurrently enrll in a Dana large ensemble t receive minr level lessns; if a student drps the ensemble curse fr any reasn, lessns will be terminated immediately. Students taking minr level lessns and planning t auditin fr the majr applied level shuld als enrll in music thery

Hwever, when yu register, nly the Percussin Seminar Class cmpnent, which meets Fridays frm 12-12:50, appears n yur schedule. Private and grup lessns are scheduled, by Dr. Schaft, fllwing ensemble placement auditins and receipt f yur class schedule. Private Lessns are designed t address individual needs. Mst music schls ffer 15 private 50 lessns per semester and a weekly 50 studi seminar class. Hwever, we assign each student weekly small grup lessns and the number f private lessns must therefre be reduced t meet YSU- OEA cntractual faculty wrklad regulatins. Therefre, each student will typically receive thirteen private lessns per semester. Yur class schedule is due the first day f classes. Teacher assignments are made in cnsideratin f yur past achievement, student and faculty schedules, and what we believe will be mst beneficial fr yur develpment. Every effrt is made t prvide yu experience with varius teachers where apprpriate. Please ntify yur teacher f yur presence by kncking n their dr at yur lessn time - use 3/2 rumba clave. It is yur respnsibility t ntify yur teacher when yu must leave. The private lessn assignments schedule is psted the first week f each semester. Lessn preparatin will vary in length frm week t week, but a lng- term 2

cmmitment t daily practice is expected. Plan t warm- up befre each lessn. Grup lessns are designed t unite students f similar interests, needs, and experience levels in a cllabrative learning envirnment. Small grups meet weekly (50 per class) apprximately 13 times per semester. The studi is divided int varius small grups each semester and a grup lessn assignment chart is psted the first week f each semester. Grup lessns are an imprtant part f ur curriculum as they ffer unique learning pprtunities nt available in private lessns and they affrd ur students apprximately twice the faculty cntact time as ther clleges r universities wh ffer nly private lessns. Class tpics may include: student r faculty presentatins, mind- bdy skills, practice techniques, listening, instrumental techniques, and repertire n timpani, snare drum, drum set, keybards, rchestral accessries, hand percussin, sight- reading, and rhythm. Students are als expected t develp their teaching skills by critiquing and caching their clleagues. Percussin seminar class is a weekly studi frum (Friday s 12-12:50p.m.) and attendance is required f all percussin majrs. Seminar typically includes lectures, discussins, student perfrmances, masterclasses, clinics, instrument care, tuning, and maintenance, research prjects, guest artist perfrmances, and studi lgistics. Student perfrmances typically ccur in a masterclass frmat, in which yu perfrm and receive critical feedback frm faculty and students. Repertire is derived frm private lessns, grup lessns, r Dana ensembles. Yu may als be required t submit written r aural cmments fr studi clleagues. Masterclass prtcl includes: dress apprpriately, bring tw cpies f yur music - ne fr the instructr and ne fr yur studi clleagues, number measures in pencil, audi (and r vide) recrd yur perfrmance and the feedback, and take ntes afterwards. Secndary curse cmpnents: Rehearsal bservatin. Faculty may chse t dedicate a prtin, ne r tw lessns, f yur applied instructin t bserving yur ensemble rehearsals, as this may be ne f the best ways t assist in yur develpment. Lessn bservatin. Faculty may assign yu private r grup lessn bservatins in the percussin studi, r ther Dana studis, t supplement yur studies. Percussin studi instrument and facilities maintenance duties may be assigned at the faculties discretin and shall be equitably distributed amngst all studi members. Required advisement meetings. A brief advisement meeting the first class day each semester t review yur curriculum guide, registratin, and class schedule. An advisement meeting during final exam week f each semester t discuss self and instructr assessment, review jury cmmittee cmments, and discuss future studies. Recital advisement meeting during the first tw weeks f fall semester r at least ne semester in advance f each required degree recital semester. Additinal meetings (during ffice hurs) may be necessary fr assistance with ensemble parts, registratin, rientatin, recital preparatin, graduate schl auditin preparatin, etc. Descriptin f applied percussin curriculum levels Freshmen Level 1501, 1502 Emphasis n the develpment f a fundamental- set f musicianship skills, instruments, techniques, and repertire. Prereq: successful cmpletin f 3700 level. Graduate Level 6901, 6902, 6903, 6904, 6905, Study f advanced percussin techniques and repertire pertaining t the student s career interests and needs. Culminates in the presentatin f the graduate recital and schlarly prgram ntes thesis dcument. Tw lecture presentatins in Percussin Seminar. Prereq: graduate auditin. Curse Objectives: develp knwledge in three principal, yet interrelated, dmains: perfrmance and pedaggy, mental/physical skills, scial and business skills. Knwledge, as defined by Alex and David Bennett, is best understd as the capacity t take effective actin, with the recgnitin that capacity includes bth ptential and actual ability. ennett&ie=utf- 8&e=UTF- 8 Dmain 1. Perfrmance/Pedaggy. Develp a deep understanding, via multiple perspectives (see Hward Gardner- f fundamental perfrmance and teaching skills. Experience music thrugh the three primary mdes f artistic creatin: re- presentatin, imprvisatin, and cmpsitin. Yu and yur instructr will establish semester and weekly gals and discuss hw t attain these. These typically include: Warm- up cncepts, techniques, and methds. Practice cncepts, techniques, and methds. Sund prductin cncepts including acustics and the human perceptin f sund. Kinesthetic mvement cncepts and techniques acrss varius percussin idims. Instrumental techniques and versatility - snare drum, keybards, timpani, drum set, multiple percussin, rchestral accessries, and ethnic percussin. Visual, aural, and tactile rhythmic and pitch discriminatin skills including relative temp memrizatin, relative pitch memrizatin, rhythmic micrbeat divisin, interval identificatin, harmnic analysis, singing, transcriptin, and sight- reading. Musical interpretatin. Awareness, understanding, and synthesis f the elements necessary fr infrmed musical interpretatin including histrical research, bigraphical infrmatin abut the cmpser, accurate scre realizatin and analysis, and cncepts f musical expressin. Develpment f listening skills thrugh live and recrded perfrmance bservatin. The ability t discuss and write analytically and articulately abut what yu have heard. Develp familiarity with percussin literature thrugh research that may include reading, writing, cncert r rehearsal bservatin, and listening assignments. Develp familiarity with prven pedaggical techniques and methds. May include research and lessn bservatin assignments. Develpment f imprvisatin skills. Develpment f cmpsitin and/r arranging skills. 4

Dmain 2. Mind/Bdy Develp knwledge f effective lifestyle habits including: sleep requirements, nutritin, breathing, meditatin, hemi sync, and physical fitness techniques including stretching/flexibility, warm- up, cardivascular cnditining, and strength training. Develp the persnal/scial skills necessary fr cnstructive cntributins t ur studi and sciety at large Develp effective time management and study/research techniques. Develp an understanding f the learning prcess including critical thinking and prblem slving. Dmain 3. Business Skills Develp a prfessinal web site and supprting prtfli materials. Establish active membership in majr prfessinal music rganizatins such as the Percussive Arts Sciety, Music Educatrs Natinal Cnference, Cllege Music Sciety, etc. Philsphy f percussin curricula Since the middle f the twentieth century, the percussin wrld has grwn expnentially and we believe that such grwth in the freseeable future and that ur career pprtunities are limited nly by ur imaginatins. Many percussin educatrs arund the wrld frequently debate whether the university undergraduate curriculum shuld include a brad general curriculum r mre specialized studies; in ther wrds essentially a debate abut breadth r depth f the curriculum. Histrically, the typical American university percussin curriculum has been based n an cnservatry rchestral instrumental mdel cnsisting f timpani, snare drum, keybards, and rchestral accessries. Many higher educatin prgrams have histrically included drum set and ethnic percussin in their curriculum, althugh usually t a much lesser degree. Mre recently, drumset and ethnic percussin curricula mdels have becme increasingly cmmn and ften include distinct degree prgrams, taught by dedicated faculty, and include little r n crssver with the standard rchestral mdel curricula. There als exist faculty wh believe that a cmprehensive curriculum, r synthesis f bth mdels, represents a viable ptin. Specializatin, in ne instrument r style, is ften viewed as smething that shuld be pursued nly after mastery f fundamental skills - typically at the graduate schl level. Alternatively, and perhaps mst attractive t me, is the idea f a curriculum that is nt built primarily upn the study f specific instruments, but rather upn the study f cncepts and techniques that might be emplyed acrss varius standard and nn- standard instruments. We cnsider all the afrementined perspectives and prvide yu an pprtunity t design with us, a persnalized curriculum. We believe that diverse peple, pssessing diverse career gals, and making diverse curricular chices enrich the YSU percussin cmmunity mre than any single - ne- size- fits- all - curriculum we might attempt t mandate upn everyne. That being said, there exist fundamental musicianship skills such as multi- cultural rhythmic skills, aural skills, listening skills, analysis and interpretatin, sight reading, cmpsitin, and imprvisatin skills that we believe are central t a well- educated musician, which cut acrss myriad musical styles, and these essential skills can usually be addressed via varius instrument r stylistic interests. I believe this "bdy f central skills" cncept must be the primary verall cnsideratin when designing any effective persnalized curriculum. ********************* 5

Bachelr f Music Philsphy Undergraduate curricula typically cnsist f tw brad phases: Thrughut yur undergraduate tenure, yu shuld experience a gradual transfrmatin; ranging frm a mre predetermined curriculum in Phase 1, prgressing tward increasingly persnalized studies in Phase 2. The rate f this transfrmatin prcess, frm primarily faculty directed learning tward self directed learning, is determined by yur ability t achieve Phase 1 prficiency levels; the faster prficiencies are mastered, the sner the prcess ccurs and the further it prgresses. We believe that the persnal maturity necessary t wisely determine a prgressively greater prtin f yur wn curse f study must be earned and that earning it prvides yu myriad educatinal and career pprtunities. Such autnmy is a true measure f persnal maturity and shuld be the deciding factr as t whether r nt yu advance t the upper divisin. Phase 1 Freshman and sphmre levels - lwer divisin. Develpment f fundamental musical cncepts, instrumental techniques, and repertire as determined in private lessns, grup lessns, and seminar class. The first tw years are dedicated t develping a cllectin f fundatinal cncepts, techniques, and repertire chsen frm amng varius percussin instruments including snare drum, drum set, keybard, timpani, Latin/hand drumming, multiple percussin, and rchestral accessries. We believe these skills will likely be central in yur career wherever it may lead. Of curse, the specific curse cntent will necessarily vary frm ne student t anther. It wuld be helpful t cnceive f this cncept f a bdy f skills/knwledge with a metaphr such as intellectual capital. Fr a perfrming artist, such a term can als be understd t include "perfrmance skills". Scilgists have shwn that intellectual capital (i.e. knwledge) perates in almst every sphere f mdern sciety t determine scial class, success r failure in schl, and even psychlgical and physical health. (Hirsch 1996) Yur accumulatin f brad fundatinal knwledge is the key t yur educatinal achievement. T be useful, intellectual capital must be bradly shared with thers, enabling yu t cmmunicate and learn effectively within sciety. American educatinal thery has claimed that students need t be given all- purpse "tls" that are necessary t cntinue learning and adapting. But the cntent used t develp these tls has nt been specified. Unfrtunately, the tl metaphr, which encurages indifference t specific knwledge (i.e. critical thinking skills divrced f a specific subject matter, etc.), has shwn itself t be ineffective. Rather I believe that intellectual capital is, itself, the greatest all- purpse tl f adaptatin in mdern sciety. Psychlgical research has shwn that the ability t learn smething new depends n an ability t accmmdate the new thing t the already knwn. (Hirsch 1996) Experts learn new things faster than nvices because f their cnsiderable backgrund knwledge. Wide knwledge is mtivatinal in that it nurishes an active curisity t learn mre. The percussin dmain is a relatively new field that cntinues t experience rapid grwth. Cmpared t classical pian r vilin pedaggy, which date back several centuries, percussin pedaggy is in its infancy. As late as the 1950 s, few universities emplyed full- time percussin prfessrs, as the standard practice was fr an adjunct teacher t teach rchestral percussin lessns; there was little university level instructin available n drumset, hand drums, percussin ensemble, etc. Shrtly thereafter (1960 s and 70 s), clleges and universities witnessed a widespread and rapid grwth in academic percussin studies and many schls began percussin degrees, percussin ensembles, and hired full- time prfessrs. 6

As cntemprary percussinists, we face many exciting pprtunities and many challenges. Our primary challenge is t determine hw t balance the cncepts f breadth and depth. Sme f the questins we typically ask include: Hw much general percussin studies shuld I pssess? Shuld I specialize? If s, when and t what degree? A fascinating pprtunity and challenge fr a cntemprary percussinist is t keep abreast f recent develpments while maintaining an adequate fcus t sustain a successful career. Many f the wrld s finest prfessinal artists advcate the imprtance f general percussin skills, thrughut ne s early training, achieved thrugh mastery f fundamental skills n the majr instruments such as snare drum, drum set, keybards, hand drums, timpani, multiple percussin, and rchestral accessries. The basis f this style f educatinal pedaggy revlves arund the specific instruments as the cre variable. Alternatively, ne culd cnceive f the acquisitin f cre musicianship skills as the mst imprtant gal regardless f the instruments studied. I favr this latter "cre musicianship skills" apprach as it encurages attentin tward central and versatile musicianship rather than a diverse cllectin f physical skills and instruments. Of curse, nt all teachers view the same skills as fundatinal r universal. The mst imprtant cncept we can ffer is t help yu understand why we believe this knwledge may be central t yur success. In my pinin, far t much percussin educatin fcuses n mtr skills kinesthetic experience - and nt nearly enugh attentin is paid t the develpment f cncepts, aural skills, sund prductin, imprvisatin, and cmpsitin. Many f yu may, already r sn will, becme active private teachers and we hpe yu will experiment and adapt similar curricular philsphy and skill sets in yur teaching. We are cnstantly re- evaluating ur educatinal philsphy and curriculum and yur suggestins are welcme. When yu begin here, we will perfrm a cmplete assessment f yur musical gals and achievement and determine yur educatinal needs. This assessment prcess will cntinue thrughut yur applied percussin tenure. Phase 2 Junir and senir level - upper divisin. The upper divisin is primarily dedicated t develping advanced techniques and interpretive cncepts, repertire, and preparing junir and senir recitals. Recitals shuld demnstrate yur versatility and unique interests. Master f Music Philsphy Graduate curricula are typically cnceived in tw phases: Semesters 1 and 2. The primary bjective is address yur individual career gals via musicianship skills, cncepts, instruments and techniques, styles, techniques, interpretive cncepts, advanced repertire, and t address any percussin related deficiencies r ptential career liabilities. Semesters 3 and 4. The primary bjective is t prepare yur graduate recital and accmpanying written schlarly prgram ntes dcument. The graduate recital shuld demnstrate advanced achievement reflecting yur career interests. ******************* Assessment/Grading Assessment shuld cmpare yu t a set f faculty and self- expectatins and these must be mutually understd and dcumented by yu and yur instructr. In the case f grup lessns and seminar class, yu learn cperatively and yet individual assessment must be perfrmed t satisfy University grading plicies. Therefre we must wrk tgether t determine hw yur learning will be assessed. Ideally, yu shuld d a cnsiderable amunt f the assessment, and t this end, yu will be asked t recmmend yur suggested curse grade and justificatins fr it. 7

Assessment may cnsist f perfrmance assignments, prtfli assignments, and adherence t syllabus plicies. I cnsider yur sustained interest in the subject matter and learning in general as the mst imprtant determinants f yur achievement. Yur mtivatin shuld be intrinsic, (nt extrinsically mtivated by grades) as intrinsic mtivatin is the best assurance f lng- term prgress. T that end, I fcus n what yu must d t reach yur ptential in each curse. I will cver in detail what, hw, and why I think yu shuld d specific things. I will nt usually, hwever, reduce this discussin t a letter grade in yur lessn, s if yu wish t knw hw a particular lessn was graded by me, please ask. In shrt, I believe letter grades are an inadequate, distracting, and largely irrelevant necessity in the grade cnscius sciety that we inhabit. Hwever, I wrk fr an institutin whse plicy it is t issue letter grades, s I hpe t address this requirement in the least distracting and harmful way fr my students and I. Belw is the standard percentage grading breakdwn and a relative weighting f curse cmpnents that I use when grading. Since effective musical expressin has much t d with ne s persnality and with their ability t effectively express emtin, I have als included descriptins f sme f the attitudes and behavirs that typically crrelate with each grade level. Clearly, trying t grade emtins and behavirs is subjective, s either a teacher avids teaching such subject matter, and instead merely teaches musical mechanics that are mre easily bjectively graded, r the teacher embraces this subjectivity that is a central element f all music making and strives t help the student pursue true artistry. Grading Scale The Dana Schl f Music grading plicy states yu must receive a C r higher in each curse fr that curse t cunt tward yur degree prgram. Grade A, % includes: superir attendance, superir achievement f weekly and semester gals, cnsistent psitive attitude, a cmplete cmmitment t attaining yur ptential. Yu lve what yu d and it shws thrugh yur passin, dedicatin, and achievement. Grade B, 80-89% Slightly less than letter grade A abve. Grade C, 70-79% May include flawed attendance, partial achievement f weekly r semester gals, incnsistent attitude r prgress, and/r a partial cmmitment t attaining yur ptential. Yur passin, dedicatin, and achievement is questinable r incnsistent, and it shws. Grade D, 60-69% May include flawed attendance, partial achievement f weekly r semester gals, incnsistent attitude, r a partial cmmitment t attaining yur ptential. Yur passin, dedicatin, and achievement is ften questinable and it shws. Grade F, 0-59% May include significant disregard fr any f the abve; a minimal achievement f yur ptential. Late assignments may require grade reductins apprpriate t the nature f the situatin. Academic Dishnesty - see YSU Bulletin, regarding plagiarism and dishnesty. Grades f incmplete r PR : See the YSU Bulletin Grading System. The nly valid reasn fr an incmplete, r PR grade, is fr a medical r ther reasn s extreme as t cause yu t be unable t cmplete the curse. Yu must be passing the curse at the time f yur request and demnstrate that the circumstances requiring the PR are beynd yur cntrl. Written assignments. Cmputer printuts must be legible. All wrk shuld be prfread fr typgraphical, spelling, dcumentatin, and grammatical errrs. Any assignment having excessive errrs is reduced in grade accrdingly. Assignments must be rganized in yur prtfli. All reference materials shuld fllw the Chicag Manual f Style. 8

Assessment criteria and weighting - cnsists f 100 pints: Perfrmance cmpnent: grup lessns - 20% seminar class - 10% private lessns - 60%, includes jury, recital, related assignments Perfrmance cmpnent includes private lessns, grup lessns, seminar classes, recitals, recital hearings, auditins, juries and related assignments. Yur achievement is primarily determined by yur mental/physical habits and dedicatin t a cnsistent and intelligent practice, research, and study schedule. In additin, maintain a prtfli (three- ring binder) that cntains: A. YSU Curriculum Guide. Revised t date, in pencil. Available in the FPA Dean s Office, YSU- FPA website, and ur percussin site curriculum tab. B. Cpy f all prgrams in which yu perfrmed, arranged in reverse chrnlgical rder. C. Cmpact disc cpy f yur recital, if a recital was required that semester. Web site/prtfli (writing) cmpnent - 10% Website design, publish, and maintain a prfessinal website in rder t prmte yur musical career. It shuld cntain: cntact inf, résumé, ne r tw paragraph bi suitable fr prgrams r press publicatins, publicity phts, dem recrdings, calendar f events, repertire list, and any ther entries yu deem relevant t yur career. Resume shuld include: cntact inf, perfrmance experience, teaching experience, hnrs and awards, prfessinal affiliatins, and reference list. Resume must be revised t current date at time f advisement cnferences. A philsphy f Educatin Statement is required f educatin majrs nly, effective yur junir year. Website shuld be revised fr yur final exam each semester and will be reviewed by faculty during yur finals week advisement meeting. Practice Guidelines: The required minimum practice times listed in the YSU Bulletin are: ne semester- hur curse requires 1 hur daily, tw and three semester hur curses require 2 hurs daily, fur semester- hur curse requires 3 hurs daily. I believe, hwever, that it is unfair t grade yu based n a required amunt f time r a presumed amunt f effrt yu might expend n a subject. If everyne learned the same amunt, at the same rate, in the same amunt f time, then "time r effrt expended" based assessment might pssess merit, but this is clearly nt the case Rather, I grade yur actual achievement, regardless f hw lng it takes yu t learn the material r hw much effrt yu expend in a given perid. T me, a mre realistic and helpful apprach is t simply recmmend suggested practice minimums, in rder t cnvey apprximately hw much time must typically be devted by average students in rder t pass the varius applied percussin curses. If, hwever, yu plan t gain acceptance t majr level graduate schl music prgrams r maintain a full time prfessinal perfrmance career such minimums r averages are likely insufficient t place yu in natinally r internatinally cmpetitive psitins; rather a 4-6 hur daily minimum is likely mre realistic regardless f yur chsen degree prgram. In any case, a lng- term habit r traditin f daily practice year- rund is expected and the amunt f time necessary t adequately prepare each week s lessn assignments will necessarily vary. Part f this practice time includes a daily warm- up rutine and a warm- up sessin immediately befre each lessn. As a rugh guide, I recmmend the fllwing practice minimums: 1SH curse 2 hurs daily 14 hurs weekly 210 per semester 2-3 SH curse 3 hurs daily 21 hurs weekly 315 hurs per semester 4 SH curse 4 hurs daily 28 hurs weekly 420 hurs per semester 9

Related assignments may include reading, research, viewing vides, cncert critiques, listening, cmpsitin/arranging, etc. Such assignments are intended t help yu develp the perspective and knwledge necessary t becme an effective perfrming artist, pedaggue, and schlar. Yur instructr may assign cmpsitin prjects t encurage engagement in analytical and creative means fr addressing individual technical and musical needs. Ntatin shuld be cmpleted via legible hand- written ntatin r cmputer ntatin sftware. The first- draft is assessed and revisins may be required. The final draft will be assessed fr legibility, accuracy, and may be perfrmed in lessns, seminar, r juries. Attendance is required at private lessns, grup lessns, seminar class, and all ther studi events such as Percussin Ensemble perfrmances, faculty and student percussin recitals, percussin perfrmances at Dana Cnvcatins, and guest artist events. Yur presence is necessary t fully realize the cmmunity f learners and cllabrative nature f this curse. The percussin studi events calendar is published n ur website ( events media tab) and is updated regularly, with the revisin date psted. Percussin ensemble cncerts will be listed n later than week ne f fall semester. Student recitals and guest artist events are typically scheduled thrughut the year and are published immediately n the percussin studi website. If yu ntice a schedule cnflict, regardless f hw far in- advance, immediately ntify Dr. Schaft as indicated belw. Any studi event (r prtin theref) yu have a ptential cnflict with r have missed, must be dcumented by an mem t Dr. Schaft as sn as yu becme aware f the issue. Use standard mem frmat: t, frm, date, descriptin f the event, and explain why yu were r anticipate being absent. Dr. Schaft will reply within a week t indicate if yur request is excused r unexcused. Any un- dcumented absence is unexcused. Excused absences may be granted fr: Special YSU events (ensemble tur, field trip, cnference, etc.) i.e. academic wrk required as part f a YSU curse in which yu are enrlled. Ptential r actual cnflicts must be dcumented by a mem frm the apprpriate YSU instructr t Dr. Schaft, explaining the nature f the cnflict. Obviusly, yu shuld schedule nn- YSU events arund ur studi calendar. Dcumented curt- rdered appearance. Absences due t serius illness and dcumented by a letter frm a certified medical practitiner will be cnsidered. In sme cases, an excused absence may be granted. A minr cld r accepting a nn- schl related gig may nt be excused. Excused absences frm private lessns will be rescheduled at the instructr s earliest cnvenience. Private lessns missed by the instructr will be made up as sn as pssible. In the case f extended teacher absence, a substitute instructr will be prvided. Unexcused absences will reduce yur final curse grade. The penalty will be determined in cnsideratin f the significance f the event missed and yur attendance histry. The YSU Bulletin states that mre than three absences results in failure f the curse 59% r less; therefre each absence equals apprximately 13.3% deductin per absence. One tardy equals ½ absence. Behavir/Curtesy: If yu fall asleep yu will be dismissed and issued an unexcused absence. Distractins t yu r thers such as lighted phne screens, ringing phnes, incming alerts, texting, etc. must be turned- ff while in the classrm. Each interruptin cunts as 10

1/2 absence. Hats, lewd r questinable attire, r ther inapprpriate r impractical (t play the instruments) attire is nt permitted. Vilatins will result in dismissal and that perid cunted as an absence. I recmmend slacks and a lse fitting shirt; n skirts, dresses, high- heel shes, r tight clthing. Avid jewelry (especially rings, bracelets, and watches) that make nise r may damage the instruments. Fd r drinks (except bttled water) are prhibited. Jury Plicy A jury perfrmance is required during finals week fr a panel f YSU faculty. Each jury member writes a critique and issues a grade, which are then averaged int a final jury grade by Dr. Schaft. If yu d nt perfrm a jury, an F is issued. Given a valid excuse, a PR will be issued. Yur instructr will explain jury repertire requirements in the varius cmpnents f applied percussin thrughut the semester. If yur repertire includes an accmpaniment part, it is yur respnsibility t secure an accmpanist. Yu must perfrm with yur accmpanist in at least ne lessn and ne seminar class befre final exams r a jury will nt be permitted. The jury cmmittee may use the fall semester juries as auditins, t determine ensemble persnnel and sectin assignments fr the spring semester Dana wind bands, rchestras, and percussin ensemble. Dr. Schaft will pst an ensemble persnnel assignment chart immediately fllwing the fall jury exams, effective fr the spring semester. Ensemble assignments are made after cnsultatin with the relevant ensemble directrs. Jury Prtcl: Sign- up n the jury list psted n the bulletin bard the last class week f the semester. Cmplete ne jury exam sheet, available frm the music ffice, fr each faculty member. Submit tw cpies f yur jury music. Phtcpies are permissible prvided yu wn the riginal. Number the measures in pencil. Submit yur prtfli. Dress as yu wuld fr any prfessinal auditin. "Thank" the cmmittee afterwards. Percussin Studi Student Recital Philsphy and Requirements T summarize, the YSU Bulletin states that each Bachelr f Music degree candidate must present a senir recital; perfrmance majrs a ne- hur recital, music educatin majrs a half- hur recital, and perfrmance majrs must als present a half- hur junir recital. In the music educatin degree, a junir recital is nt required. I believe, hwever, that these recital requirements are nt in yur best educatinal r career interests. Since 1996, I have required each Bachelr f Music majr (perfrmance and educatin) t present a junir and senir recital and this plicy has prduced excellent results and has been welcmed by mst all ur music educatin percussin majrs. Further, I believe it is my right and duty as a respnsible faculty member t maintain academic standards I deem essential, beneficial, and reasnable fr each applied percussin curse. If yu disagree with my recital requirements, please discuss yur cncerns with me as sn as pssible and certainly befre the final curse drp date. 11

The cncept f designing int ur curriculum r mandating significantly lwer musical standards fr an educatin majr is a repulsive idea t me, especially as a lng- time perfrming artist and music educatr. Althugh music educatin majrs d receive less credit fr their applied curses (this fact is cnsidered as faculty make assignments, be they lessns, juries, recitals, etc.) I believe that presenting bth a junir and senir recital is a central and beneficial experience fr any Bachelr f Music majr, be they perfrmance r educatin. I wuld hpe that yu wuld want t perfrm tw recitals f the mst challenging music yu are capable f presenting and I trust yu will be grateful fr this pprtunity thrughut yur life, as many f ur alumni have cnfirmed. T address the afrementined curse credit differences, I typically adjust recital duratin and repertire difficulty fr music educatin majrs. T eliminate the junir recital nly eliminates pprtunity. Whereas t reduce the repertire duratin and difficulty preserves a student s pprtunity t perfrm yet als reflects the earned credit difference between perfrmance and educatin majrs. T me this ptin represents a satisfactry cmprmise. The reasns why music educatin majrs receive less applied semester hur credits likely has mre t d with the necessity t limit the ttal credit hurs fr the entire YSU educatin degree rather than a deliberate institutinal attempt t limit a student s musical achievement. Regardless f the intent hwever, the result is that music educatin majrs will likely suffer an achievement deficit if we merely require the YSU Bulletin standards. Therefre, we must reach an understanding abut what expectatin is in yur best interest and I am happy t discuss this at any time. Sme schls address this degree credit issue by ffering nly half- hur applied lessns t educatin majrs; an idea that the Dana faculty has, frtunately, histrically rejected. Nnetheless, it is peculiar that bth perfrmance and educatin majrs receive 50 weekly lessns and a 50 weekly seminar (the same exact seminar class fr perfrmance and educatin majrs) and yet there exists a credit discrepancy between them. I believe this fact prves my assertin that the reasn fr the credit discrepancy has t d with YSU capping degree credit hurs. Obviusly, it wuld be mre cst effective fr YSU t ffer nly half- hur lessns. If yu believe there shuld be a direct crrelatin between curse meeting times, assignments, and credit hurs, yu will likely be frustrated by many American music degrees, as this phenmenn is widespread. T prepare fr a rewarding career yu must be willing t mve beynd such superficially bjective criteria. My recital requirements are merely an attempt t help yu mre fully realize yur ptential in the time we have tgether. Therefre, YSU Percussin Studi Recital Expectatins are: Each BM degree recital shall include minutes f music as apprved by Dr. Schaft. Junir recital - required secnd semester f 3700 level. Senir recital - required secnd semester f 4800 level. Graduate MM recital required furth semester applied study. Nn- degree recitals are permitted pending Dr. Schaft s apprval. I ften recmmend a sphmre recital fr perfrmance majrs. Recital Prcess Overview includes five phases that must be cmpleted by the last class day f the applied curse semester fr a passing grade t be issued. I. Recital advisement meeting Schedule with Dr. Schaft at least ne semester befre the recital applied curse. This shuld ccur during weeks 1-2 f fall semester. Dwnlad a cpy f the Percussin Recital Frm, cmplete yur infrmatin, and bring it t this meeting. II. Bking a date Recitals are bked during weeks 1-15 f the fall r spring semesters. N recitals are permitted during final exams, YSU bserved hlidays, breaks, r summer terms. N recital 12

may cnflict with a Dana Schl f Music event unless apprved by Dr. Schaft and Michael Gelfand. Fall semester recitals shuld be bked during the previus spring term. Submit the Percussin Recital Frm, apprved and signed by Dr. Schaft, t Michael Gelfand, Bliss Hall 3031, , <mgelfand@cc.ysu.edu>. He will check date & venue availability and will return written apprval t Dr. Schaft. Dr. Schaft will cnfirm the date and it is fficially bked nce it appears n the Events Calendar n ur percussin web site. III. Recital hearing. A cmmittee f three full- time faculty assesses if yur repertire preparatin, the printed prgram, and ffers artistic guidance. Hearing must ccur at least 14 days befre the recital. It is yur respnsibility t cntact all cmmittee members and schedule the hearing; Dr. Schaft will first recmmend sme ptential times t yu in the recital advisement meeting. This tw- week advance time frame allws fr any required musical r prgram nte revisins withut effecting the recital date, prgrams, r publicity. If yur applied teacher believes that yu are nt adequately prepared t pass a hearing they may cancel it at any time befre the appintment. Hearings are graded (pass=a, B, r C) r (fail=d r F). This grade is factred int the applied percussin curse grade. Recital Hearing Prcedure. Materials t be submitted at the hearing: Percussin Recital Frm. Use the frm n the percussin website, nt the Dana frm. Recital prgram (typed). If the cmmittee suggests revisins, yu must receive Dr. Schaft s apprval f such crrectins befre yur prgram is printed. Prgram shuld include cmpser birth and death dates and cmpsitin dates. See Bakers Dictinary f Music and Musicians and the Harvard Dictinary f Music (Maag Library). Als include prgram ntes, a several paragraph bi, and the pertinent percussin studi calendar events (available frm ur website). One cpy f repertire with measures numbered. Phtcpies are permitted prvided yu wn the riginal scre. Recrd yur perfrmance prtin f the hearing fr later use with yur applied teacher. Fllwing yur perfrmance, the cmmittee will ffer pass/fail ntificatin and artistic recmmendatins. Pending a passing grade, the faculty will sign the Percussin Recital Frm and yu may prceed with the publicity and lgistics prcess utlined belw. Pending a failing grade, the faculty will give recmmendatins, suggest a re- hearing date, and hld the Percussin Recital Frm until yu pass. IV. Recital publicity. Prgrams. E- mail yur prgram t FPA prgram crdinatr, Anna Ruscitti <aruscitti@ysu.edu> 1215 Bliss adjacent t Bliss Recital Hall. Anna s ffice will prepare a draft prgram and return it t yu fr prfreading. Within ne week after the recital: Submit vide recrding t Dr. Schaft fr instructinal purpses. This will be returned t yu. Submit a CD cpy f the audi recrding t Dr. Schaft fr the percussin studi library. Disc shuld be in a jewel case; bth the case and disc labeled with yur name, recital, date, and an attached recital prgram. Recital grading. After the abve are cmpleted, Dr. Schaft will issue a grade fr the recital that is factred int the semester final grade. Each recital is graded pass r fail. Pass (A, B, r C) r fail (D r F). If the recital is nt presented befre the last class day f the semester a letter grade f F will be issued fr the curse. This grade takes int cnsideratin the recital hearing perfrmance level and t what degree the perfrmer made the imprvements suggested by the hearing cmmittee. If a recital is cancelled due t unfreseen circumstances (perfrmer illness, family emergency, curt rdered appearance, r a faculty absence) it shall be re- scheduled as sn as pssible.
