Mentin was made f Jim Krueger s effrts n behalf f St. Jseph s Parish and its 150 th anniversary celebratins. The usual annuncements regarding membership and bks fr sale and upcming events were made. There were 57 in attendance at the meeting. The evening s speakers were then intrduced as they spke f the 50 th anniversary seasn fr the Fx Valley Symphny starting in September. My answer is I play the audience.

6 I have heard sme say they prefer CDs f musical pieces because they are perfect but they miss the pint. A cncert is mre than the music it is a scial event where we cllectively share the music and share in each ther s cmpany and in the visual kaleidscpe that is the symphny cncert. This is illustrated by a recent article abut three wmen in Baltimre wh have attended 50 years f cncerts tgether and speak f the music and the cmpaninship enjyed ver all that time. We have all heard r read articles abut the imprtance f music t ur lives, ur hearts, minds and ur suls. I wuld like t read sme excerpts frm a speech given by Karl Paulnack t the parents f incming students at the Bstn Cnservatry. The first peple t understand hw music really wrks were the ancient Greeks. The Greeks said that music and astrnmy were tw sides f the same cin. Astrnmy was seen as the study f relatinships between bservable, permanent, external bjects and music was seen as the study f relatinships between invisible, internal, hidden bjects. Music has a way f finding the big, invisible mving pieces inside ur hearts and suls and helping us figure ut the psitin f things inside us. [Sme examples include the musicians wh made music even in the Nazi cncentratin camps during Wrld War II and the fact that fllwing the attacks f September 11, 2001, the first rganized public expressin f grief, ur first cmmunal respnse t that histric event, was a cncert.] Frm these experiences, I have cme t understand that music is nt part f arts and entertainment, as the newspaper sectin wuld have us believe. It s nt a luxury, a lavish thing that we fund frm leftvers f ur budgets, nt a plaything r an amusement r pass-time. Music is a basic need f human survival. Music is ne f the ways we make sense f ur lives, ne f the ways in which we express feelings when we have n wrds, a way fr us t understand things with ur hearts when we can t with ur minds. Sme f yu may knw Samuel Barber s heart-wrenchingly beautiful piece, Adagi fr Strings. It yu knw that piece f music yu knw it has the ability t crack yur heart pen like a walnut; it can make yu cry ver sadness yu didn t knw yu had. Music can slip beneath ur cnscius reality t get at what s really ging n inside us the way a gd therapist des.

7 I bet yu have never been t a wedding where there was abslutely n music. There might have been nly a little music, there might have been sme really bad music, but I bet yu there was sme music. And smething very predictable happens at weddings peple get all pent up with all kinds f emtins, and then there s sme musical mment where the actin f the wedding stps and smene sings r plays the flute r smething. And even if the music is lame, even if the quality isn t gd, predictable 30 r 40 percent f the peple wh are ging t cry at a wedding, cry a cuple f mments after the music starts. Why? The Greeks. Music allws us t mve arund thse big invisible pieces f urselves and rearrange ur insides s that we can express what we feel even when we can t talk abut it. Can yu imagine watching Indiana Jnes r Superman r Star Wars with the dialgue but n music? What is it abut the music swelling up at just the right mment in ET s that all the sfties in the audience start crying at exactly the same mment? I guarantee yu, if yu shwed the mvie with the music stripped ut, it wuldn t happen that way. The Greeks: Music is the understanding f the relatinship between invisible internal bjects. What fllws is part f the talk I give t incming freshman a the cnservatry: If we were a medical schl, and yu were here as a med student practicing appendectmies, yu d take yur wrk very seriusly because yu wuld imagine that sme night at 2:00 a.m. smene is ging t waltz int yur emergency rm and yu re ging t have t save their life. Well, my friends, smeday at 8:00 p.m. smene is ging t walk int yur cncert hall and bring yu a mind that is cnfused, a heart that is verwhelmed, a sul that is weary. Whether they g ut whle again will depend partly n hw well yu d yur craft. Yu re nt here t be an entertainer, and yu dn t have t sell yurself. The truth is yu dn t have anything t sell; being a musician isn t abut dispensing a prduct, like selling used Chevies. I m nt an entertainer; I m a lt clser t a paramedic, a firefighter, a rescue wrker. Yu re here t becme a srt f therapist fr the human sul, a spiritual versin f a chirpractr, physical therapist, smene wh wrks with ur insides t see if they get things t line up, t see if we can int harmny with urselves and be healthy and happy and well.
