This year prmises t be anther great year filled with many pprtuni\es fr ur students t grw and achieve. Miss Tsarnas and I have been wrking diligently t prepare everything fr ur students with the incredible help f ur CP Instrumental Music Bsters. 4 Frm ur Assciate Directr Dear Students and Parents, Welcme t the new schl year! I am lking frward t what I am sure will be a wnderful year ahead. Yur supprt thrughut the year made it a successful and enjyable \me wrking in the Instrumental Music Department. As I am lking frward t this current schl year, I am excited with the pssibili\es f grwth ahead in my wn teaching, as well as the students learning as musicians and cmmunity members. I lk frward t diving int lessns nce the craziness f the first few days winds dwn, geang t knw the new students, and helping them grw in their apprecia\n f music. I am always amazed with what great students we have here, and hw much they grw in their musical understanding and playing abili\es. Seeing thse mments f understanding and lking back at where each student started is ne f the mst rewarding things fr me as I have been teaching. String Orchestra, Jazz Band, and Cncert Band have all grwn in numbers this year, and I am encuraged by seeing s many students cn\nuing their music educa\n cming in t high schl. The friendships and life lessns learned are invaluable t every ne f ur students. This year I will be teaching tw Pian I classes and ne Pian II class fr a ttal f three pian classes! This is a great grup f students wh are nw able t learn a musical instrument and becme a part f the Cllege Park Instrumental Music family withut any previus musical experience. 5 PROGRAM PHILOSOPHY Cmmunity Service Thrugh Music Mst will agree that the strngest cmmuni\es are thse that fster an aatude f service and mutual helpfulness fr the greater gd. The Cllege Park Instrumental Music Prgram is pised t be a leading schl prgram t help students learn and fully understand what it means t serve yur cmmunity thrugh yur strengths and talents. In ur case, it is music. The Cllege Park High Schl Instrumental Prgram has enjyed a rich histry f mre than fily years, and thrughut its histry, the rganiza\n has maintained a reputa\n fr musical excellence and high standards fr perfrmance. Given these facts, ur music students will cn\nue t u\lize their abili\es fr their cmmunity in the fllwing ways: Ensemble Specific Cmmunity Service Prjects Pep Band (Ftball) As we mve frward, Cllege Park instrumental music students will begin t nt nly understand what it means t serve their cmmunity, but als why it is imprtant. PROGRAM CURRICULUM The study f "cncert music" is at the cre f the instrumental music prgram. In this cntext, "cncert music" refers t the music f serius cmpsers whse cmpsi\ns are f such depth that the student may study the music fr many years, yet s\ll learn and grw frm such music. This is pssible nly with music that can be experienced n many levels. In the early stages f study, the student understands such music n a surface level at which the frm, meldy, technical challenges and cntextual meaning f the music can be experienced and appreciated. At deeper levels, the student becmes aware f the less bvius, yet cri\cal rela\nships between meldic, harmnic, and rhythmic elements elements which cntribute t the beauty f the wrk and call fr specific interpre\ve treatment. Other types f music prvide the student with a brader musical educa\n and understanding f ar\s\c expressin. Mst cri\cal t the Instrumental Music Prgram is the study f jazz. Jazz is a uniquely American prduct and represents a frm f musical expressin nt present in cncert music and ther types f music. It prvides the musician with pprtuni\es t study imprvisa\n and develp a strnger understanding f harmnic rganiza\n. Sl playing is a primary element f jazz perfrmance and assists the student in develping fcus and spntaneity under pressure. The CPHS bands and rchestras ccasinally study lighter music such as mvie/televisin themes, Bradway, and ppular tunes. Hwever, this music is nt cnsidered t be part f the cre curriculum. Students with brader interests are encuraged t seek ut sa\sfying musical experiences beynd the classrm, such as par\cipa\ng in cmmunity bands/rchestras r drum crps.! 5

7 ENSEMBLES Wind Ensemble The Wind Ensemble is ne f the premiere ensembles at Cllege Park. Students are admi`ed t the Wind Ensemble nly aler achieving a high level f mastery n their instrument and aler demnstra\ng, by audi\n, their readiness t read and perfrm advanced wind music. Students will be chsen regularly frm the Wind Ensemble t perfrm as part f the Cllege Park Symphny Orchestra (CPSO). Symphnic Band The Symphnic Band is an ensemble cmprised f mstly upper classmen wh have cmpleted at least ne year in the CP Instrumental Music Prgram. In sme cases, freshmen can be admi`ed t Symphnic Band if they can demnstrate a reasnable level f prficiency n their instrument. Mst students will advance t the Symphnic Band frm the Cncert Band autma\cally unless they chse t audi\n fr the Wind Ensemble and succeed. Students in Symphnic Band are expected t be prficient players and sight-readers ready t tackle challenging music. Cncert Band With sme excep\ns, freshmen wind and percussin students are placed in the Cncert Band fr a year f intense study in which great prgress is made in instrumental technique and musicianship. In prepara\n fr par\cipa\n in Symphnic Band r Wind Ensemble, students learn t master ensemble perfrmance skills such as listening, adjus\ng and respnding t the cnductr's gestures, as well as intna\n and sight-reading. Symphny Orchestra The CPSO is ne f the premiere ensembles at Cllege Park. Students are admi`ed t the CPSO nly aler cmple\ng a successful audi\n demnstra\ng a high level f mastery n their instrument. The CPSO perfrms advanced rchestral literature and par\cipates in perfrmances n and ff campus. All members f the CP Symphny Orchestra will be required t a`end evening rehearsals as needed during the schl year. Students will be n\fied well in advance f the rehearsal schedule. As a general rule, wind & percussin students will nt be pulled frm ther classes during the day fr Symphny Orchestra rehearsals. Chamber Orchestra The Chamber Orchestra is ur newest ensemble class at Cllege Park. This is an advanced ensemble in which students must demnstrate by audi\n, their ability t read and play advanced rchestral music. Audi\n requirements fr this ensemble are iden\cal t that f ur Wind Ensemble and any student wishing t be a part f the Chamber Orchestra must prepare well in advance. Students in the Chamber Orchestra are the string players in the Cllege Park Symphny Orchestra (CPSO). String Orchestra With sme excep\ns, freshmen string students are placed in the String Orchestra fr a year f intense study in which great prgress is made in instrumental technique and musicianship. In prepara\n fr par\cipa\n in Chamber Orchestra/Symphny Orchestra, students learn t master ensemble perfrmance skills such as listening, adjus\ng and respnding t the cnductr's gestures, as well as intna\n and sight-reading.! 7

8 Jazz Ensemble The Jazz Ensemble is the premiere jazz grup at Cllege Park. Placement in Jazz Ensemble is by audi\n nly. The grup studies jazz wrks f mderate t advanced levels and par\cipates in many fes\vals and jazz events. Students in the Jazz Ensemble must cmmit t daily rehearsals at 7:00 AM and must als be in ne f the three Bands r ne f the tw Orchestras in the regular schl day. This plicy is strictly fllwed with very few excep\ns. Jazz Band The Jazz Band, which is ur entry-level jazz grup, prvides interested students with an pprtunity t imprve upn their understanding f jazz technique N audi\n required. Students in the Jazz Band must als be in ne f the three Bands r ne f the tw Orchestras in the regular schl day. This plicy is strictly fllwed with very few excep\ns. ADDITIONAL MUSIC COURSES AP Music Thery In addi\n t the perfrmance ensemble classes ffered at Cllege Park High Schl, we als ffer AP Music Thery as a curse f study fr thse music students with a desire fr an in-depth academic study f music. It is generally cmprised f upper classmen (Junirs & Senirs) and will prepare students fr the AP exam in Music Thery as well as fr further study f music aler high schl. Any student interested in this class must have prir experience in music. Chral students are welcme. Pian & Guitar Cllege Park students have the pprtunity fr music expsure r a new experience, thrugh ur beginning pian and guitar classes. Prir experience is nt required. These classes are geared twards the general student that is interested in a music class but maybe has never has the pprtunity. These music curses are a ne-year curse in which students learn the fundamentals f playing either pian r guitar. STUDENT EXPECTATIONS Students in the CPHS Instrumental Music Prgram are expected t maintain a level f cmmitment t the study f music that results in bth persnal and grup grwth. Instrumental music shuld nt be taken as an easy elec\ve r used as a haven frm ther academic subjects. As in all academic subjects, instrumental music students are expected t study, learn, and demnstrate their learning thrugh perfrmance, tes\ng and wri\ng assignments. Students f the Cllege Park HS Instrumental Music Prgram will: AXend all rehearsals and perfrmances. Each ensemble is a team; therefre it is impera\ve the each member f the ensemble is present at every perfrmance. Students may nt make up a perfrmance. PracNce regularly utside f class t master the music studied in class. Prac\ce cards r lgs will nt be used. It is the full respnsibility f students t be prepared fr class knwing their music having prac\ced utside f class.! 8

9 All students will be required t perfrm regular playing tests in class; therefre even the mst talented music students will have t spend \me prac\cing. True mastery f the music will nt happen in class alne. Fr 100% success, the student must spend \me prac\cing utside f the full ensemble. Fllw prper rehearsal enquexe by being axennve and engaged in rehearsals at all Nmes and demnstrate apprpriate behavir while in the rehearsal rm. A cmmn sense apprach t prper set-up and tear-dwn will be used. Students will be expected t fllw this prcedure everyday. Always use apprpriate cmments and thughwul answers. Raise hand t speak and keep talking t a minimum N calling ut. Play with the cnductr N prac\cing in class. Handle and play nly yur wn instrument. Enter and exit the rehearsal rm calmly. Always demnstrate prper care f instruments and classrm equipment. Bring all necessary supplies t every rehearsal including instrument, music, pencil and any ther necessary items. Including but nt limited t, reeds, il, mutes, cleaning rags, etc. Remain a helpful, flexible student f gd humr and agreeable a\tude, willing t g the extra step t achieve excellence. Always be ready t help withut being asked. Take ini\a\ve t help keep the rehearsal rm clean and well kept. Be willing t help yur peers and the Directr with a cheerful aatude. PARENT/GUARDIAN EXPECTATIONS Parents play a crucial rle in the success f students. In rder fr us t achieve that success, we must have parental supprt. This includes the fllwing: Encuraging yur musician t prac\ce at hme. Suppr\ng and helping at imprtant events/cncerts. Prviding private lessns whenever pssible. Suppr\ng the Directr by enfrcing student behaviral and a`endance expecta\ns. A`ending the regular instrumental music bsters (CPIMB) mee\ngs. CO-CURRICULAR & EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES The cre f the CPHS instrumental music prgram cnsists f the seven regular class day ensembles Wind Ensemble, Jazz Ensemble, Jazz Band, String Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra, Symphnic Band & Cncert Band. All ac\vi\es, cncerts and events invlved within these grups are cnsidered c-curricular, meaning that they are a required integral part f the verall prgram. The term extra-curricular refers t addi\nal perfrmance pprtuni\es such as in ur Symphny Orchestra, as well as any tur r trip an ensemble may take. All students are encuraged t a`end, audi\n and par\cipate in extra-curricular ac\vi\es including, but nt limited t:! 9

10 MDUSD Hnr Band/Orchestra. Cntra Csta Cunty Hnr Band/Orchestra. CBDA All-State Hnr Band/Orchestra. CMEA Sl & Ensemble Fes\val(s). Perfrmance Turs/Trips. WRITTEN ASSIGNMENTS Students will be required t cmplete wri`en assignments as part f a balanced music educa\n. Assignments include: Listening Guides Students will listen t musical selec\ns in class with a wri`en listening guide t help guide their ear thrugh the music. Class discussin will fllw. A wide range f styles, perids and ensembles will be cvered. Perfrmance CriNque Essay Each student will be required t a`end an utside cncert by a prfessinal r semi-prfessinal ensemble nce per semester. Cmmunity ensembles, cllege ensembles and high schl hnr ensembles are acceptable. Students may als a`end ONE regular schl ensemble perfrmance frm anther high schl in r ut f ur district during the schl year. Again, nly ne Perfrmance Review may be used in that manner. See hand ut fr mre inf and due dates. Music Thery & CmpsiNn/TranscripNn Assignments Students that are prficient in reading and speaking in any language usually have had lts f prac\ce wri\ng in that language. Likewise, in rder t becme a prficient player, students must prac\ce and understand wri\ng dwn music. Assignments will include basic music thery cncepts as well as mre advanced cncepts fr mre advanced players. While sme music thery will be cvered in perfrmance ensemble classes, students wishing fr the mst in-depth study f music thery shuld cnsider taking AP Music Thery. PERFORMANCES Since all f the instrumental music curses at CPHS are perfrmance based, students and parents must understand that the perfrmance is at the center f what we d. Thrugh perfrming music fr an audience we are able t learn abut music in a very persnal way. Therefre, all perfrmances are required. If a student must miss a cncert r perfrmance, the directr must be n\fied at least tw weeks prir t the absence s that necessary adjustments may be made in the ensemble. Students wh fail t infrm the directr f an absence will suffer at least a ne full lexer grade reducnn. All requests fr absence frm a perfrmance are at the discre\n f the Directr.! 10

11 GRADING POLICY ALL ENSEMBLES: Jazz Band, Jazz Ensemble, Cncert Band, Symphnic Band, Wind Ensemble String Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra Grades will be calculated in the fllwing manner: Perfrmances 30% Regular Schl Cncerts Off-Campus Fes\vals Off-Campus Cncerts/Perfrmances Playing Assignments 20% Tuning/Lng-Tne Drills Scales/Arpeggis Music Parts Sight-Reading Physical Elements Rehearsal ENqueXe 20% The manner in which yu cnduct yurself befre, during and aler rehearsal will be factred int yur grade. Students that are cnscien\us, well behaved, flexible and easy t wrk with will earn full credit. Gd Rehearsal E\que`e includes (but nt limited t): Entering and exi\ng the rehearsal rm in a calm, rderly fashin. Prper set-up/tear-dwn. Remaining engaged in the rehearsal, even if the Directr is nt wrking with yur sec\n. Playing with the cnductr and nt n yur wn N prac\cing in class. Keeping talking t a minimum. Students will be able t earn 10 pints per day, 50 pints per week fr Rehearsal E\que`e. Students may lse pints in the fllwing ways: Music Flder lel ut: -5 pints Instrument lel ut: -5 pints Frgt music flder: -5 pints Frgt instrument: -10 pints Other disrup\ve, rude, defiant r pr behavir: -1 t -5 pints at the discre\n f the Directr. SecNnals 20% Students will be required t a`end a sec\nal lead by either the Directr r the Sec\n Leader. A \me and place will be decided by the grup and everyne must a`end. At the end f each sec\nal, the Sec\n Leader will turn in a Sec\nal Frm t their Directr t keep track f what was accmplished in the sec\nal. 12 Grading Scale: % A Excellent (N + r will be used) 80-89% B Abve Average 70-79% C Average 60-69% D Belw Average 59% F Failing TARDY POLICY Cllege Park High Schl has a schl-wide tardy plicy that will be enfrced: 3 Unexcused Tardies = Deten\n 2 mre t equal 5 Unexcused Tardies = Saturday Schl Aler the 5 th tardy & Saturday Schl, the cnsequences will alternate; every 3 rd tardy is deten\n fllwed again by Saturday Schl at the 5 th tardy. Tardies DO NOT reset at the Quarter r Semester. TRIP ELIGIBILITY All CPHS aler schl/extra-curricular eligibility rules apply. See CPHS planner/handbk fr mre inf. ** DISCLAIMER: Please nte that yu and yur student are nt required t purchase, dnate, r cntribute any pr\n f the csts fr any (field)trip. Hwever, if yu vluntarily decide t purchase, dnate, r cntribute any pr\n f the csts fr the trip, yur purchase, dna\n, r cntribu\n will be applied t the verall budget fr all students t par\cipate in the field trip. Addi\nally, the staff is scheduling fundraising events in which yu and/r yur student will have the pnn t par\cipate t help facilitate each student s a`endance. It is nt mandatry that yu r yur student par\cipate in any f the fundraising event(s) as a cndi\n fr a`ending the (field)trip(s). CHAIR PLACEMENT & PART ASSIGNMENTS First semester chair placement will take place in Orchestra, Symphnic Band and Cncert Band during the first tw weeks f schl in class (Wind Ensemble & Jazz Ensemble have a different methd/\me fr audi\ns see Audi\ns ). Music fr chair placement will be chsen frm the repertire being played in class as well as scales/arpeggis and sight-reading. First chair players will assume the rle f Sec\n Leader fr their designated sec\n. In Orchestra, the first chair vilinist will assume the rle f Cncert Master/Mistress. Part Assignments in all ensembles will be dne by the Directrs and mnitred in cnsulta\n with the Sec\n Leader. The Directr reserves the right t shuffle r re-assign parts at any \me during the semester. If needed, the Directrs and Sec\n Leader will have the authrity t call a Sec\nal in which all members f that sec\n must a`end.! 12

13 CHALLENGE AUDITIONS Challenges will be allwed in all ensembles fr thse students wishing t mve up in their sec\n. Students may nt challenge anyne mre than tw chairs higher than their wn. Sight-Reading will be included in the Challenge Audi\n. The prcedure fr challenging will be as fllws: 1. The student wh wishes t challenge (challenger) must n\fy the Directr f their intent t challenge. The Directr will then n\fy the persn being challenged (challengee) and schedule a challenge audi\n fr bth students. The actual challenge will take place at \me when bth students can a`end and will be at least ne week aler the ini\al challenge n\fica\n. 2. Aler n\fica\n, the challengee has tw days t select a pr\n f any music in their ensemble s flder. N mre than 30 measures f prepared music will be allwed. Once a selec\n has been made, the challengee must infrm the Directr and challenger. 3. Bth students prac\ce the selected music in prepara\n fr the scheduled Challenge Audi\n. 4. Bth students a`end the Challenge Audi\n. N-Shws cns\tute an immediate frfeit. 5. The Directr determines a winner and that winner assumes the higher chair while the challengee assumes the lwer chair. Seats change at the next class mee\ng. AddiNnal InfrmaNn: In the case f a \e, there is n fficial winner and bth students stay in their respec\ve chairs. Bth students invlved in the Challenge Audi\n, regardless f the utcme may nt challenge again fr a perid f tw weeks. Challenge Audi\ns will nt be scheduled immediately preceding significant perfrmances and will be at the discre\n f the Directr. WIND, CHAMBER & JAZZ AUDITIONS Wind Ensemble & Chamber Orchestra Audi\ns fr Wind Ensemble and Chamber Orchestra will take place in May fr the fllwing fall semester. Audi\n requirements, \mes and prcedures will be cmmunicated t students in advance s that p\mum prepara\n \me will be allwed. The Wind Ensemble and Chamber Orchestra lists will be psted by the last day f schl. Jazz Ensemble Only (N audinn required fr Jazz Band) Audi\ns fr Jazz Ensemble will take place during the first tw weeks f the new schl year aler schl. Each student will need t sign up fr an individual audi\n \me in which the fllwing will be required: Play tw majr scales f yur chice (swung). Play a Drian scale f yur chice (swung). Play a prepared shrt jazz excerpt. Sight-reading! 13

14 PERFORMANCE ATTIRE All CPHS music students wear frmal perfrmance aare as fllws: All Bands & Orchestra Ladies: Frmal black dress/gwn, black clse-ted shes, limited jewelry; hair must be up r pulled back. Gentlemen: Full frmal tuxed (cat, pants, white tux-shirt, black bw-\e, black cumberbund, black scks/dress shes, studs & cufflinks p\nal, n vest). Jazz Ensemble/Jazz Band Ladies: Dress r skirt/bluse (female dress slacks k), clse-ted shes, limited jewelry, hair must be up r pulled back. Gentlemen: Black slacks, bu`n-up cllared shirt with \e, black shes/black scks, black cat (the tux cat wrks well). In addi\n t the frmal perfrmance aare, all CPHS music students wear casual perfrmance aare cnsis\ng f the fllwing: All Music Students, Bands & Orchestras Purple Cllege Park Band/Orchestra pl shirt, blue jeans, casual shes. Prac\ce rms will be available mst days at lunch & brunch (excluding Wednesdays) STUDENT LEADERSHIP Overview Leadership psi\ns fr students help t advance the Instrumental Prgram by prviding assistance t the Directrs and service t ther students. Student leaders are expected t be exemplary ensemble members wh shw a firm cmmitment t their assigned tasks and respnsibili\es. There are three types f student leadership psi\ns: Student Cnductrs, Ensemble Managers and SecNn Leaders. Student Cnductrs Students wishing t gain experience cnduc\ng may apply t becme a Student Cnductr. Student Cnductrs can be selected in Wind Ensemble, Symphnic Band and Chamber Orchestra. Student Cnductrs will be named by the end f September and will be regular members f the Instrumental Music Leadership Team. The Student Cnductr s du\es will be t assist the Directr with regular rehearsals, large grup sec\nals, as well as serve as the cnductr when the Directr is absent. Students Cnductrs will als have the pprtunity t cnduct a piece f music at selected schl cncerts thrughut the year. 16 Ensemble Managers Ensemble Managers are selected by the Directrs thrugh an applica\n prcess. These leaders assist the Directr in ac\vity planning, make sugges\ns fr imprving the experience f students and perfrm ther tasks as requested by the Directrs, mst f which take place during class. Students wishing t be Ensemble Managers shuld enjy researching and planning events and be willing t arrive early and stay late t ensure that all ac\vi\es (cncerts, fundraisers, trips) begin and end smthly. Ensemble Managers will als assist the Directr with classrm equipment and maintenance. SecNn Leaders Fr mst sec\ns f the ensemble, the Sec\n Leader will be the persn wh is placed in the First Chair psi\n aler audi\ns. Sec\n Leaders are utstanding musicians wh assist the Directr in iden\fying and crrec\ng musical prblems within the sec\n. SecNn Leaders d nt serve n the Leadership Team. The primary jb f the Sec\n Leader is t be the musical leader needed in their sec\n. CPIM Leadership Team The Cllege Park Instrumental Music Leadership Team will cnsist f Student Cnductrs and Ensemble Managers.
